...talking about it, when will Tom Danielson finally break through? ;)

Well He's 36 now and some US riders don't hit there stride till they are in their early 40's so put your money on him winning the 2020 Giro.

Thomas Lövkvist, anyone? Out with overtraining. Just not happening with that kid, is it?

Wiggo entered the 2012 Tour up against the defending champion.

Sorry, AG, but that just brought to mind all the fear that Sastre's rivals had going into the 2009 TdF.  :D

    No offense intended.  :P

This is / was a good thread that got a bit bogged down with Dark Side allusions.

Strikes me that, always allowing that it's still premature, this thread might benefit from some flexibility over its definitions.

So I'll take a (slightly provocative) look at what one might call the Sky Black Hole (without suggesting that it is all the team's fault):

    Salvatore Puccio
U23 Ronde van Vlaanderen winner in 2011. Signed in haste to satisfy the Italian wing of the Sky brand. Since then, unremarkable domestique.
    Prognosis: requires miracle

    Edvald Boasson Hagen
To be fair, he won a few good races at Sky and his MTN career shows that the unfulfilled promise isn't limited to the boys in black.
    Prognosis: peaked already

    Sergio Luis Henao
Yeah, but he's 27 already. His best years may yet be ahead but until he came to Europe, his junior and U23 palmares suggested greatness.
    Prognosis: there's still time...

    Joe Dombrowski
String of impressive results at U23, Baby Giro winner in 2012. Did zero in two seasons at Sky due, as it turned out, to an iliac artery problem.
    Prognosis: comeback kid?

    Thomas Lövkvist
Came to Sky as a one-week stage racer full of potential. Rarely broke the top 10 at Sky and left for IAM Cycling in 2013, quitting altogether last year, citing overtraining and a lack of motivation.
    Prognosis: what went wrong?

Thank goodness Luke Rowe and, to a certain extent, Peter Kennaugh are proving us wrong this year...

Matt Goss: 10 wins including Milan-Sanremo in 2011.

One win each in 2012 and 2013 and for the last two seasons, just finishing races is the only celebration.

Indeed, Dombro seems to be the comeback kid. He's had some good results this year (I also think #tcg is a way better team for him)

    Peter Velits.

Two-time Peace Race winner as a junior, U23 World Champion in 2007, podium in the 2010 Vuelta.

    Now? Decent domestique at BMC.

    Jan Ghyselinck:

Junior and U23 Ronde van Vlaanderen winner, junior and U23 Belgian TT champion. Podiums in several big U23 stage races.

Turned pro in 2010. Has won the Polynormande since then. And nothing else.

This is / was a good thread that got a bit bogged down with Dark Side allusions.
Perhaps we can start a new one in the Dark Side, or just move it to the Dark Side, just because a lot of riders I want to mention were hampered by Darkside Issues. Lets just say Charly Mottet. Great palmares, untill? You know. Basicly retired age 29. Just like Edwig, Gilles and others.

On the other hand, would you fellas and lassies like it when people started to a roll on this thread while posting pictures of riders like:

Now, that was an unfullfilled promise, good he ended up at Patrick's team.

    Thorwald Veneberg?

    Jan Bakelandts?

    Romain Sicard?

    CHAVES RUBIO Jhoan Esteban?

    LE MEVEL Christophe?

    And: the Osa's?

Just a few cents of mine.

    Edit:

    not to forget

Yvo Molenaers was probably an unfulfilled talent. He is a Limburger of Riemst.

The "Belang van Limburg" of June 10 2016 gives an article about an outdoor musical show in his honour, held on August 12 & 13.

He won the 1962 Tour of Luxembourg, was 2nd to Emiel Daems in Milan-Sanremo that same year and 3rd to Peter Post and Benoni Beheyt in the 1964 Paris-Roubaix
