Can we see your bike though, AG? You know, in the flesh, not the official vendor's picture of it. Something arty next to the lake maybe?

During the summer I do a lap around Richmond Park.

11.25km circuit, with 2 bumps that for me are proper hills that seriously reduce my speed though for pros wouldn't register.

    This is the profile.

First one comes after a 120 degree turn so there is no pace going into it and is steeeeep. The second one is a longer drag and comes right at the end with no energy left.

I started timing about 3 months ago. My original best time was 25.01, with 3 or 4 attempts between 25and 26 minutes, but after changing my tyres, unexpectedly my times fell by about 2 minutes to my shock cos i didnt expect tyres to make such a difference.

Anyway since then my times are usually under 23 minutes. My best was 21.50 which at the time i felt would hold for a while because I had very favourable conditions.

But then very surprisingly 2 days ago, on my first ride in a month cos i was on holiday, i beat my record by 5 seconds and did 21.45, in far from ideal conditions.

Even better, yesterday, despite being knackered by the previous ride, having a headache and having a little bit of alcohol in my body cos i had graduation a few hours earlier, i did 22.29. I was really surprised because I had intended to take it as a relax ride and only aimed to beat 25 minutes and again, conditions were poor.  Also in my experience on other courses, I usually ride about 10% slower on the day after a good effort, even when I feel good. So 3 % was really strange.

I will qualify that my bike isnt a proper road bike. It weighs about 12kg, the tyres are twice as thick as road bike ones, not the most aerodynamic and no clip on pedals. I also dont bother with clothing cos i like the sun so ride in a tshirt.  It makes me proud because everyone else rides proper road bikes and gear and sh*t and i can match many of them.

However i balance this out by drafting when I can.    So luck- how much draft I can get on a ride, plays a huge part. So do tactics - picking the right wheel, making a sprint to catch a wheel/ car etc.

Thats what I mean when I write conditions. My last 2 riders had very little draft opportunities which is why i was so surprised by how good they were.

Edit: I forgot to add that there is 1 technical descent. I always take that descent with the brakes on  because my bike shakes a bit on descents and also i seen someone get carried away on an ambulance there once. Theres cars that come the other way. Also I figure if I do the descents fast I will always have to compete with that fast descent when matching times so better to just neutralize it. I seem to be the only person in London who does that though cos people always come flying by at twice the speed, and I then end up catching them later on the flat.

  • Despite the self-serving data benders and associated propaganda to the contrary, I am led to believe that there are pockets of organised, highly sophisticated dopers, even within 'new age' cycling teams. Personally, I don't accept that the 'dark era' has ended, it has just morphed into a new guise.

I assume there are no traffic lights on that circuit? Because if there were they could influence the times a lot (if you don't run red lights).
During the last couple of years of riding in Copenhagen traffic I have become an expert in judging whether or not I can make a green light, easing off if there's no way and speeding up if I think I could.

I slide around in them a lot but they're generally easy to get into and the cleats go great in the mud. My Gaerne Inkas, which I bought for winter riding, are nice and stiff on the sole but offer almost no heel support in comparison with my Gaerne road shoes which are bags better. This was a first for me and without heel support I felt almost naked, strangely enough. But I got used to them and they're really good shoes.

on the cross bike get some eggbeaters. nothing shifts mud and crap like eggies.  But theres absolutely no platform at all

It may shock you and others who followed that little narrative, but I intend to sell my CX bike shortly. Where I'm headed, I can't carry two bikes around with me. :(

Eddy Merckx talks a lot of sh*t but I find the one about cycling up grades rather than buying upgrades, a great one and i follow it.

I like the knowledge that the easy improvement is always an option.

    As hinted at above...

    https://twitter.com/L_arriviste/status/376082049750159360

Unfortunately, due to significant life changes, this is the first of what will doubtless be several concerted efforts to downsize my chattels and personal effects.

I've been through this process before and it's always tough but it's for the best in the end: I have to travel light(er). In the foreseeable future, I will be unable to run two bikes and the road has to be my focus.

If you're in or around Belgium and you've got about €800 spare:

Thanks, though I think graduations are like bdays, overrated.

No traffic lights though there is 1 roundabout where cars usually block my way. I have just learnt to accept it as even 5 seconds on a 22 minute course isn't that much. Getting a good draft for a few k is worth a lot more.

besides I decided sometimes one has to learn how to deal with setbacks.

I have done courses before that involved traffic. I would just pause for thay small stretch of road. Also courses where i had to cross roads. Don't do those anymore, not worth it.

€639 thanks to the nice salesman not too bad as the cheapest race bike was €599. I wanted that one originally but they didn't have it anymore so he sold me this one for €639 instead of €699 and the €699 was a bargain already (came from €899)

As hinted at already, I'm selling my CX bike after less than a year. :(

I want another road bike for the next chapter of my life but I can't afford one if I keep this too (much as I would like to). Guy coming today, hopefully he'll give me a good price. I'll miss this baby, it was a lot of fun while it lasted.

Sold. Give it a couple more weeks then go get another road bike.
