My reading of it is that McLaren made Hamilton's decision for him. Being a complete cock when releasing telemetry data on twitter was probably the last straw and McLaren stopped waiting to see what Hamilton would do and brought in the best young talent available instead.

I do love that they have announced Hamilton's replacement before Mercedes have officially confirmed his signing. A great "up-yours" disguised behind a polite smile.
