Bit late on the uptake here, but can someone explain to me why Vettel started from the pit lane rather than the back of the grid (team's decision/FIA decision/the rules allow this?) and why his car was not in parc ferme after qualification, and consequently, why the mechanics could completely alter his car set up?  As this Gary Anderson article says, his car went from second to last in the speed trap in qualifying to 4th in the race.  That to me, doesn't seem quite right that that is allowed, just because his team made a mistake with his fuel in qualifying...

the rules say that you need to start from pitlane if you break parc fermé regulations. So originally he was set back to the back of the grid and Red Bull swapped the gearbox and changed the gearing and so on and therefor he had to start from pitlane.

You can have a look at the official documents on the website of the FIA:

So you can choose to break parc ferme whenever you want to as long as you take your pit lane penalty?

yep, it says so in the sporting regulations

    Quote
    34) POST QUALIFYING PARC FERMÉ

34.1 Each car will be deemed to be in parc fermé from the time at which it leaves the pit lane for the first time during qualifying practice until the start of the race.

    [...]

34.5 If a competitor modifies any part on the car or makes changes to the set up of the suspension whilst the car is being held under parc fermé conditions the relevant driver must start the race from the pit lane and follow the procedures laid out in Article 38.2.

    [...]

    38.2

    [...]

Any car which is still in the pit lane can start from the end of the pit lane provided it got there under its own power. [..] All such cars may then join the race once the whole field has passed the end of the pit lane for the first time after the start.

so in theory everyone could just change his car and start from pitlane, but it's a huge disadvantage of course. Vettel did a good race on sunday coming from pitlane but we may not forget that he benefited massively (approx ~40 seconds + having the better tyres in the end) from the two safety cars.

I've always been a huge fan of Jenson's donuts... Love this clip, watched it like 5 times in a row!

    http://t.co/xR533G8q

And it just HIT ME - I'm planning a trip to Europe next week in May - Barcelona & Monaco - that's IT - I'm going to see my FIRST GRAND PRIX! Barcelona would be awesome, but Monaco's a no brainer. Currently the plan is to stay 3 weeks in total, and they are 2 weeks apart on the schedule, not sure how much the tickets are, but if price is not too much of a factor - does Monaco have cheaper/free zones?? - might just see them both... I can't begin to tell you guys how f*cking excited I am right now.

That sounds awesome Kabloemski!  Monaco would be amazing to watch and the  atmosphere would be unreal.  No idea how ticketing for it works, but hope you do make it!

Monaco is no bargain for sure...tickets for race day start at ~350 EUR + everything else will be extremeley expensive as well, especially if you need to take hotel and so on.

there are tickets for 75 EUR as well but the reports do not sound exactly promising:

    Quote
the cheap option is the general entry that allows you to pick your own spot on the Rock and cling to it if you can. Believe me it is not worth the candle and you are competing with thousands who will be there from 5am for the best vantage points. You will already have an unpleasant crush situation on the trains from Nice to Monaco that day. [...] I suggst there is no alternative to one of the grandstands. You would be far better watching the race on TV.

Thanks search :-) I will deffo not stay in Monaco, will be day tripping. I'll be staying with various mates around Europe, which is why I can afford it in the 1st place. Reckon it would be worth saving for - and I can always cut something else off the itinerary to budget for that - worth it, right?

"@andrewbensonf1: RT @Jamesallenonf1: Austin looks like a real Red Bull circuit http://t.co/WGhOqRMA"

"Sectors 1 and 3 look to especially favour Red Bull; Sector 1 is like the Magotts/Beckets sequence at Silverstone, while in the final sector the RB8 will devour the long triple apex Turn 17.

Apart from that corner, the rest of Sector 3 has similarities to Korea and parts of Abu Dhabi, where the McLaren was very fast in Lewis Hamilton’s hands, but the overall impression is that the race is Sebastian Vettel’s to lose, unless Ferrari have come up with a silver bullet in development terms...The one unknown is what the track surface will do to the tyres. It looks more abrasive than the recent races, but once again Pirelli has gone conservative with the Medium and Hard tyres from the range, so barring some major shock, it is likely that the race will feature a number of one stop strategies, with some teams trying two because the pit lane is quite short"
