My Next Graphic Project: Top Level Teams history
« on: September 24, 2013, 21:25 »
My next graphic project which ive been planning for a while but never got around to.

Eventually it will be a graphical representation of All top level teams, back to the days of the national teams.

So far, it includes all the current 19 world Tour teams along with their respective histories and how they came about.

I'd add Amadio's Vini Calderola to Liquigas's history. And Sidermec and Tacconi before that.

Dont get too excited. Could be years.

Just spent an absolute age on Europcar. Forgot they could be traced back the sixties. :S

Nice. I did something similar a while back. I recall getting carried away and including all manner of debatable links and dead ends as a method of clustering the teams into blocks. If I recall, Sigma and RMO made it into my Belkin genealogy. It got complicated and hurt my head. Yours is better and prettier.  :D

oh shush. At the moment ive included all teams that have ridden a grand tour since 2005.

Im not even going to try and go down the pro conti and conti route. The eventual aim is to include all trade teams that have ever ridden a grand tour.

You've got Gerolsteiner on their twice, by the way. Is there no connection between Gerolsteiner and Milram?

Brief investigation, I don't think there was any formal connection between Gerolsteiner and Milram, but the latter did hire eight riders from the former when it folded.

That's not very surprising - Milram were the only German team left by then.
There was no connection between the two teams that I'm aware of - I think one of the "junior" Gerolsteiner DSs may have gone to Milram as well, but that was simply signing with a new employer, nothing formal.

Dim, I don't want to come across as a full-on nitpicker - but what about the two big Belgian teams. Technically, OPQS is a merger between old Omega Pharmo-Lotto and old Quickstep and Lotto-Belisol is a new team. OPQS is racing under the old OP-Lotto-license, held by Marc Coucke. Lotto-Belisol is racing under a new license (of course most of staff come from OP-Lotto...). I know it's hard to put into that project but right now it looks like two seperate teams with just the sponsor switiching.

Edit: Gerolsteiner 1998 and Gerolsteiner 1999-end are two different teams. The 1998 Gerolsteiner team only existed for one year. After that the Gerolsteiner company switched to sponsoring Holczer's team which was called "Schauff Öschelbronn professional cycling team" in 1997 and 1998.

Other than that: totally stunning effort.

    Dim,

I really am splitting hairs here because I thought that original Riis entry in management was with CSC-World Online. World Online was then acquired by Tiscali. CSC-Tiscali came into the public view at the TdF in 2001, but before then they were CSC-World Online.

It gave me a chance to re-read parts of Riis biography, especially the Bo Hamburger episode.

nitpicking is fine. I say on the chart, any pointers let me know. My memory isnt what is was, english wikipedia is mostly wrong, im relying on spanish and italian wikipedia and old tour programmes so any errors its good. :D

will change gerolsteiner in todays update. Omega Pharma/Lotto still trying to work out. my primary filter is sponsor, and then management so it may just be that I have to put some notes on the lotto and quickstep entries

ok, original Gerolsteiner, former 1991 as cologne cycling team, sponsored by gerolsteiner in 1998 then disbanded in 99
    holzers is the other one.

theres also team cologne running 1999-2001 which some sources say was run by dieter koslar who ran the original cologne/gerolsteiner, but other sources say cologne folded in 99 after gerolsteiner left.

I may be wrong about this because I'm purely going from memory but didn't parts of both PDM and RMO merge  into the Festina team in about 1992? If they did that would mean that Festina could trace back to the La Redoute team in the 70's.
