I will remain active in cycling for sure but I feel it’s time for me to move on to the other side of the fence and help Chinese cycling to develop. I’d like to give the talented 15 or 16 year-olds a chance to reach the pro level.

    and another one...

    #giant press release

    Quote
CARTER JONES OPTS TO LEAVE PROFESSIONAL CYCLING

Carter Jones (USA) has chosen to leave professional cycling in order to focus on a different career path. Jones had been considering his future for some time, and the recent crashes influenced his decision to quit professional cycling sooner rather than later. Team Giant-Alpecin respects this decision and offers its full support and cooperation. Jones and the team have agreed to terminate his contract as of July.

Jones explained: “It is a personal decision related to two accidents, one last year and one recently, and I am now ready to move on to the next step in my life. I have spent two great seasons at Team Giant-Alpecin, and they have provided me the opportunity to compete in many races at the WorldTour level.

“I have to thank my family for expecting me to complete my college education before fully pursuing a cycling career. Now I will use my degrees in integrative physiology and sociology from the University of Colorado, as well as the experience I have gained as a cyclist, to transition to a career off the bike. Through my experience as a cyclist I have developed an interest in sports marketing and event production, which I hope to pursue further.”

“Carter has been a valuable member of the team, and we respect his decision,” said coach Rudi Kemna (NED). “Carter’s dedication and professionalism cannot be faulted, and it has been a pleasure to have worked with him. We want to thank Carter for his commitment to the team, and we wish him all the best in his future endeavours.”

I was cursing the whole team that day, poor Fabian :(

Still, it was a well-deserved victory, one to remember. Vansummeren always was a great rider, a hard worker who gave everything for the team, and in that Roubaix win he got the biggest reward possible. Sad to see him retire.

    Sad to see him retire.
But happy for him - he got the win, got the rock, and got the girl.
And his name will forever be etched on one of those Roubaix velodrome showers.

Purito Rodriguez will retire at the end of this season. He never got the GT win he deserves, but has a great palmares nonetheless. An Olympic medal on this parcours that is well-suited to him would be great - and hopefully he'll be able to do something this Tour as well.

He doesn't rule out an engagement with a smaller team though, either as part-time rider or mentor/coach/DS.

Boris Dron seems to retire, according to L'avenir du Luwembourg (newspaper of the Belgian province Luxembourg) .

He had zona in spring 201 and cannot get back the standard that was his before. He's had several cash, was deeply affected by the death of friend Demoitié.

However he wishes to still be busy with youngsters of the CC Chevigny, a local club in the Luxembourg province.

Teammate and other Walloon Gaetan Bille is also predicted to leave Wanty Groupe Gobert, probably for Wallonie Bruxelles, former team.

    (Today's GvA)

Kai Reus definitively stops racing at age 31.

He's been deeply upset by Stig Broeckx and Antoine Demoitié's crashes and decided his family was more important than his sport.

Reus was a multitalent but was hit by a car while training in 2007 and spent 11 days in coma thereafter, followed by a long period of revalidation.

His season start was more than decent whereafter he was yet again demoted to ProConti team Roompot Oranje.

I still remember his win at the 2005 GP Pino Cerami. It was the first time I could see the race live and he impressively dropped Bert Dewaele in the Tienne du Dragon, while still a U23 rider and Dewaele being a good experienced rider.

Dries Hollanders announced earlier this year that it would be his last season and that the Gooik Arrow (Gooikse Pijl) would be his last race. That was last Sunday. The organisers of the race knew about this and offered flowers at the start, which he did not expect.

Dries is a gym teacher in a sport school in Tessenderlo and coach for a few youngsters with talent. Cycling, family and work was a hard combo. He's never turned pro, had opportunities but it was always just not.

On that page of the Belang, we learn that Guy Crasset was hit by a heart attack. He is the driving force behind the Entente cycliste de Wallonie which organises a lot of races for amateurs in Wallonia. He's also a grea archivist, he's got a lot of race full results dating back from the early 20th centuries and contributed to http://memoire-du-cyclisme.eu/

    May he heal soon.  :(
