Of course, if this turns out someday to be the industry standard integrated handlebar-computer-braking solution then I'll eat my kevlar-reinforced aerodynamic hat.

Assan Bazayav will retire after the Tour of Almaty.

Vino has offered him a "job in Kazachstan" and he agreed

No new contract with Riis, no desire to step down to Conti, and certainly no desire to take a chance with XXX-Christina Watches - tough luck.
This is why Denmark/Scandinavia needs a ProConti team.

Scandinavia need one for sure and would be a great team , the cyclists would work well together , the DS´s etc no problems sponsors would be easy to find.

The fans however , not sure they wold get behind it - weird thing the scando´s and sport

Good point. But I think you should be more optimistic.
It works OK for Concordia-Riwal with their Swedes, and People4You-Unaas is a Swedish-Norwegian team as well that looks as if there are no problems there as well.
Of course nobody (apart from us nerds) gives a damn about Continental teams, and, as you say, it's logical that the riders & staff work well together.
However, while the public might have reservations at first, success tends to win over people:
Imagine Alexander Kristoff getting a top-5 at the Ronde for Team Statoil-Nordea (just picking some random sponsors here), supported by Kasper Klostergaard, Martin Mortensen, Fredrik Wilmann, Tobias Ludvigsson etc. :)

Mikel Astarloza will retire after the Tour of Beijing

    http://www.biciciclismo.com/cas/site/noticias-ficha.asp?id=66257

    Farewell letter (gt):

    Quote
"With this note I want to report that this 2013 will be my last season as a professional cyclist, after 22 years contesting races and the last 12 seasons in the top flight.

My debut was in the "Tour Down Under" to Australia in 2002 and the "Tour of Beijing" will be my last race as a professional next week. I've always stated as a lover of the "Tour de France" and the mere fact of having played 9 times has been an honor!

Although only lift my arms have gotten 3 times, my greatest triumph has been enjoy my profession and earn a living doing what I like, to pedal ...

It has been a long journey in which I have made many friends, I have met many places and carry with me many fond memories.

It was the hardest decision I've had to make so far, but I turned 34 and I think it's time to change your lifestyle.

I will leave aside many things that surely miss you, but afrontaré new life projects with the same enthusiasm as I have done so far.

I would not want to say goodbye without to thank everyone who have helped me in my career, family, friends, teammates, masseurs, mechanics, managers, journalists, organizers, fans and especially the town of San Pedro.

Continue seeing cycling and of course, the roadside ...

    A warm hug and soon!

In San Pedro, the October 1, 2013

    Mikel Astarloza Chaurreau

  • Despite the self-serving data benders and associated propaganda to the contrary, I am led to believe that there are pockets of organised, highly sophisticated dopers, even within 'new age' cycling teams. Personally, I don't accept that the 'dark era' has ended, it has just morphed into a new guise.

One of cycling's best riders - in every aspect of the sport - stops.
He can look back on a longer and more illustrous career than he himself ever thought when he started. Thankfully he'll stay involved, giving others the opportunity to learn from the "professor" in years to come.

    Grazie, Marco.

Flecha says he has already booked a no-return ticket to Hawaii  :hitch

personally I'd have liked to see him around for another one or two years, but I can understand that he don't want to bother with another team change and so on. He has had a good career - few wins though, but still, Het Volk, Züri Metzgete, Giro del Lazio, a Tour stage and several podiums in Paris Roubaix, and never anonymous, his races and wins stay in mind.
