Tour of Rwanda 17th - 24th of November 2013
« on: November 09, 2013, 14:28 »
The fifth edition of the Tour of Rwanda, organized by the Rwandan Cycling Federation will be held from 17 until 24 November 2013.

Riders soar on the roads of Kigali and will have to travel the 805 km in eight days.

The peloton arrives at Amahoro Stadium in Kigali Sunday, November 24 where one of the riders will don the yellow jersey to succeed Darren Lill, who won the Tour of Rwanda 2012.

 TOUR DU RWANDA
04.08.2013 - 20h:20
Until 2008, TOUR DU RWANDA was a regional cycling race that brought together Rwandans but also riders from neighboring Burundi, Tanzania, Uganda, ...

Upon his election to the head of the FERWACY in 2008, aided by the National Technical Director Jock Boyer, Aimable BAYINGANA, President, has worked to organize TOUR DU RWANDA internationally.

With Olivier Grandjean, consultant, expert and general coordinator, and with the support of Jean-Claude L’HERAULT very experienced in organizing international events, success was not long in coming and less 4 years, the TOUR DU RWANDA has risen in the leading (top 3) of racing cycling organizations on the African continent.

With the considerable assistance of MINISPOC and private economic partners, TOUR du RWANDA found its cruising speed and allows, each year in mid-November, to offer a magnificent sporting spectacle free for a week, and throughout the country to the people of Rwanda !

Through national and international media coverage of quality, beautiful landscape of the country of thousand hills are seen all over the world…
Each year, riders from far away (USA, Belgium, Canada, France, ...) or closest (Kenya, South Africa, Eritrea, Algeria, Gabon, ..) are challenging the Rwandan riders on their land ...

TOUR DU RWANDA allows African riders to highlight in the context of a passage in professional and well run in the top professional teams in the world’s elite. Thus, the first 3 of 2010 edition included a big team (Orica-Green Edge for Daniel Teklehaimanot, Team Europcar for NatnaelBerhane and Argos Shimano for Reinardt Van Rensburg)

The very international palmares( a Moroccan, an Eritrean, an American and a South African were winners) confirms the sport quality of TOUR DU RWANDA. source

Of course, if this turns out someday to be the industry standard integrated handlebar-computer-braking solution then I'll eat my kevlar-reinforced aerodynamic hat.

It would appear that there are 5 classification leaders' jerseys in this race: I thought the maximum was set at 4 by UCI regulations.

Three of these are straightforward enough: overall lead, mountains classification, highest local rider.

I've not previously seen a stage winner jersey: do any other races have this?  Is it just for the podium, or is it worn on the road?

And the only other time I've come across a team classification jersey is in the Tour Series of criterium races in which the main competition is a team point scoring system.  I can't imagine sponsors being too happy if the team, doing well, are unable to display their corporate colours.

The 3.5 km prologue was won by Rwandan Janvier Hadi, giving the locals the first yellow jersey of the race.

On the jerseys: The Tropicale has the insane amount of 11 (!) different jerseys. I think that some of them (e.g. the jersey for the best African team) are podium jerseys only, and I imagine the same is the case here.

No clue, I only followed it via Twitter.
Some accounts that tweet from the race:

Here's a picture of #mtn2013 wearing the team classification jerseys:

So they are used for the podiums, we'll see tomorrow if they'll be in-race as well.

While this is the prologue winner and race leader, Janvier Hadi:

It was a great stage from what I could see via Twitter.
First Nathan Byukusenge on a long solo break, getting a 7-minute gap, and then the race exploding completely on the penultimate climb (cat. 1). Groups formed, merged and split, and in the end the Rwandans took a 1-2:

Have a look at those crowds!
Six Rwandans in the top-10; Jay Thomson defends #yellow.

    The start in Gisenyi

Jock Boyer, the man behind Team Rwanda

A volcano in neighbouring DR Congo

    They're off!

The wreck of a truck along the road

And one of the sadder things, a DR Congo refugee camp

Crowds in Sashwara, hometown of Gasore Hategeka, Janvier Hadi & Aime Mupenzi

More crowds, this time in Mahoko

    Meintjes wins the stage

The young South African also takes #yellow as Jay Thomson abandoned because of illness

Eritrean Team ASBECO take today's team classification

Metkel Eyob has impressed me so far. 14th in the prologue, at the pointy end of every stage, and wearing the mountain jersey - he's a real talent.

    http://www.teammtnqhubeka.com/?news=johann-van-zyl-blog-rwanda-a-different-experience

Johann van Zyl on the race so far:
    Quote
I’ve never experienced a race like this. Never mind the race, I’ve never experienced anything like this. This is Africa at its best. Everywhere you look you see people. And they align the road from morning until we pass and they go crazy! At the finish I have to cover my ears sometimes as the noise the crowd makes when Adrien climbs onto the stage is deafening. Passion at its best.

It also makes you put things into perspective. It’s sometimes so easy to complain about the smallest useless thing. Here, the smallest thing can put the biggest smile on a face.

Belgian francophone daily Le Soir has a nice photo-article on the race. Text translates thus:

"At the dawning of the commemoration of 20 years since the genocide, Rwanda is still synonymous with ethnic conflict. In this small, central African country, the bicycle has become a tool for reconciliation and the national team a symbol of unity. In 2009, the first Tour of Rwanda was born, tracing more than 1,200km across the country. Riders from all over the continent but also from Europe and the United States, come to climb the innumerable hills of the landscape. Putting behind them a heavy past, Rwandan citizens follow their national team with the pride of a people keen to turn the page."

Johann van Zyl took his first individual pro victory today, after being up the road from km 1. He started in a 11-rider break, but then left the others behind and continued solo. Dylan Girdlestone finally caught him in the last 30 km, and they rode to the finish together. Girdlestone took over the GC lead (he's now 2'10" ahead of Meintjes), while van Zyl won the stage.
