It is a terribly dangerous sport and anyone who rides, competitively or not, knows the score but one can't rationalise or minimise these deaths. The life of an individual, with all of its unique colour, emotion and experience, is an enormous loss.

Personally I have no interest in the circumstances that led to it but I can appreciate that such things may be in the public interest. However I thought today was, as a significant effort in the course of a stage race, a very dignified gesture to the rider and the team.
