Emerging riders CQ game
« on: November 25, 2013, 19:02 »
I had been toying with an idea for an emerging riders CQ game last year when I became aware of MC Mountain's Youth CQ game.

But rather than ditch my idea altogether, I've adjusted it, I hope sufficiently that it complements rather than competes with other games.

The big difference is that it is a longer term competition: your riders' scores will be cumulative over 2014-2016.  Many of us have now done these games for some years: now let's try one that lasts some years.  I would envision posting scores monthly.

An emerging rider, for the purposes of this game, is anyone with a lifetime CQ total of less than 200 points as at the end of 2013: they can be any age.  There is a budget per rider, but no team budget as such (you can't spend on one rider what you save on another).

A rider's home page at CQ shows yearly totals: whether the total is more than 200 should be fairly evident (Example: Dylan van Baarle is out of the game).   If you send me any ineligible riders, I'll let you know.

Your team should have 18 riders (so you might not even need to research a different list from your Youth CQ game, simply check their totals and retain 3 more of your shortlist for a quick team).

The main CQ game will (quite rightly) be uppermost in people's thoughts, and so I'll delay the closing date until the end of January: in a three year game, scores from one month won't make that big a difference.  Teams to me by PM.

Teams in as of 30 January:
Afrank
Al Pacino

asdfgh101
Bellsax
Blackbandit222

To clarify, that's 200 points per rider, not as the total for all 18.

As regards CQ mayhem, I have got one more rather more lighthearted CQ game up my sleeve if we haven't totally saturated the market between us.

another question is it how much they improved so say a rider has 89 points gets to 500

another rider has 199 gets to 500

the 89 point rider wins ?

This would be so much easier to research if you used procyclingstats rather than CQ

Are there just too many riders?

How about people born '90 or later who fulfill the scoring criteria (if they haven't scored more than 200 points by then, they're probably not going to score that many in the next three years)? Does that give a more manageable number to look at?

If this game had just come to the end of a 3 year cycle (and had started at the same time as the first main game), it would have been possible to score 25730 if you'd had the good fortune to select

    Quintana
    Kittel
    Demare
    Bouhanni
    Kwiatkowski*
    Betancur
    Majka
    Talansky
    Bardet
    Kelderman
    Vichot
    Slagter
    Dumoulin
    Izagirre
    Debusschere
    Durbridge*
    Dennis
    Dowsett*

you could probably have improved on that if you managed to predict the career of any of the following.

    Martinez
    Coquard
    Zoidl
    Arrendondo
    Nizzolo
    Hofland
    Chernetskiy
    Bongiorno
    Herrada
    Mezgec
    Jungels
    Moser
    Landa

I think this could be really fun. I know I have some young riders in my CQ spreadsheet that are really talented but I don't really expect big results from next year because they're stepping up a level. They have a much better chance over three years though.

I just did that with 1989 or later (although that way you miss out on the rising star Johnnie Walker), brings it down to ~2000 riders (not including zero pointers)

I don't really mind how many riders there are eligible just that there's some way to view them all on a sheet or something.

It's a game more about those developing riders you've researched who you think will emerge. You're not going to be able find an exciting talent from an excel sheet, there's no background/context/info

Absolutely no objection: that would be great.

Even without that, one can look at the CQ download for the end of this year, delete all those scoring above 200 in the year, delete all those over whatever age you consider to be unlikely to be an asset, make a shortlist, and then check eligibility or submit to me to check eligibility.  (In fact, I just did that: took about 2 minutes, and that includes uploading it to MediaFire)  I'll edit out some of them tonight if I get a chance.

To confirm a couple of other enquiries: your score after three years is a simple total, no subtraction of previous costs, so it makes no difference what a rider's points pre game were so long as they are eligible.

There is of course a danger of team similarity: I tried to avoid that by making the teams rather bigger than the 12 riders I was initially thinking of.  If people have teams that are only discovered to be similar after the reveal in early Feb, that is no reflection on the merits of their research and speculation.

Maybe we need more riders than 18 working for 3 years. In one first list I found 33 very interesting riders ( 8 Juniors ). It will be very important the riders of 18 or 19 years old ( now with value 0 ).

well that's the challenge isnt it to pick the right ones. and if, as looks likely, the game is popular you will be picking for another 3 year period for the second edition of the game this time next year.

    What mc_mountain said.

Also, I don't think someone who was a junior in 2013 would get more points in 2014-2016 than a rider who's been riding in U23 for 2-3 years already, shown his talent, but is just below the 200-point cutoff. That junior would have to be better than Caleb Ewan - and that's just about impossible.
