Looking to replace my trusty hybrid. Any suggestions?
« on: December 01, 2013, 02:53 »
I'm looking to replace my 13 year old steel hybrid. I use it for commuting about town, with front & back baskets for load-carrying. I'm not keen on panniers, unless someone can recommend panniers than can be securely locked to the bike & kept there.

I'm prepared to spend roughly $500 & $800 AUD (335€ -536€, based on today's rates).

Any suggestions would be gratefully received.

 :)

  • Of course, if this turns out someday to be the industry standard integrated handlebar-computer-braking solution then I'll eat my kevlar-reinforced aerodynamic hat.

the bike shops I went into did have quite a number of nice hybrid bikes with front baskets at least that seemed to be fairly ok Siz.

I didnt try any as I was looking for a road bike - but there was a bit of choice.

New bike  :woohoo :nomnom   :niceday   :Gift:

In the end I decided to support my favourite LBS, and went with a Marin San Rafael DS3 hybrid.
    (See http://www.marinbikes.com/au/bikes/description/2014-san-rafael-ds3)

The sales staff seemed to think it was a great choice at a great price, but then they're sales staff, and perhaps they're good at it.  ;)

My old Malvern Star was 15 years old and steel. I have only ridden about 30 km so far on the Marin, but it feels very light and smooth in comparison.   :)   :party

Got the bike for $600 AUD, the panniers for $140 and, with a couple of bits & pieces, all up spent about 850 AUD (about 560€, or 760USD, at today's rates).

    The old & the new:
