popularity scores 2013 ( link to armchair's post ) and 2012 ( link to skibby's post tallied from 'uniqueness' 1st perspective)

    1798   The Hitch
    1751   MADRAZO
    1721   Afrank
    1717   LaFlorecita
    1664   Duartista
    1663   FF'Wilco
    1659   shalgo
    1659   VeloRooms
    1639   the asian
    1627   skidmark

    Spoiler (hover to show)
    1413   SteelyDan :win
    Spoiler (hover to show)

so the impact of uncommon picks, Sagan, Froome, Ciolek, Quintana, Cancellara and Cav mean popularity wasnt a good guide to eventual placings.  top 10 teams in bold.

    2012

    Spoiler (hover to show)

    117   bicing   1329
    118   MADRAZO   1344
    119   minessa   1347
    120   shalgo   1352
    121   FF'Wilco   1404

    122   Ruudz0r   1405
    123   The Hitch   1405
    124   Froome19   1413
    125   skidmark   1434 :win
    126   Kvinto   1480

maybe some can look at from the other angle - ie what is the lowest finishing position for someone that was in the top 10 of the popularity rankings.  placing 5th on this year's table that would be very much of interest.

Great stuff. The difference between 2012 and 2013 in terms of popularity scores and actual placings in the end is striking. Take MADRAZO for instance. 2nd most popular team last year, which turned out to be very mediocre in the end. He barely made the top-70, IIRC.

So the range in my score over three years is about 70, interesting. Even though this year I thought I tried harder to pick unique riders.

Eh but there are more players this year... Gone from top20% in 2012, medianish in 2013, to bottom third this year.

Thanks for all the the number crunching and hard work mc and skids.

I'm happy with Arashiro and fifties throwback Marc De Maar being two of my unique riders.

Not got many of my picks riding Amissa Bongo, San Luis or TDU - so it could be a quiet January.

the significance of the total number of points is different each year though depending on the number of teams -  with breschel on 105 of 120 odd teams in 2012 overshadowing 74 of 87 teams for Haussler in year one.  you could have the same total in 3 years and it mean different things in terms of how popular you team was,

Hey guys, over in the CN thread there's been some grumbling about allowing changes to teams after the deadline (which I did in a few rare cases where the spreadsheet had screwed up and I had told people they were under and they were not, only discovered after the deadline). As a result, I told people if they thought this put them at an unfair disadvantage, they could feel free to make a similar change in the next 24 hours. I feel like most people here understand these exceptions, but if you have a big problem with it I at least wanted to extend the offer. See the CN thread for more details, I'm going to avoid that thread for a bit because it's bumming me out.

Okay, so remember that fun game we're playing? It's just getting started, and here is all the info on all the teams! Peruse all 149 teams as you like, talk about your faves, who you think will do well, who won't, what riders you're surprised about. Also, please tell me if you notice any spelling errors or mistakes that should be dealt with as soon as possible.

To make things a little more fun, even though the official update is coming out after the Aussie Nats RR, I manually programmed the results from the TT so there are some teams with some points.

My effusive thanks to mc_mountain who basically walked me through every aspect of adding teams. I copy/pasted them and then he did the mammoth work of setting up the popularity tab, copying everything into that, as well as erasing tabs from former players who weren't playing, and correcting formulas etc.

    Here we go!!!

I would also like to take the opportunity to express just how grateful I am that skidmark came onboard and his efforts since, as before he did so there was a strong possibility I would try to run both games.  not only did he come onboard to help but so that I could continue my association with the youth game, he dived straight into the much bigger task of the main game and has done an absolutely fantastic job with it.

three cheers for skidmark hip hip :win hip hip :win hip hip :win

119th in the popularity ranking. I haven't been this unpopular since school!  :party

I have to say, my unique/nearly unique picks aren't entirely surprising, and I'm not convinced any of them will score big enough to make a difference.

All of these riders are shared with 3 or fewer other teams:

    ARCHBOLD Shane
    KEOUGH Luke
    IRVINE Martyn
     - those three are my unique picks for a total of 10 points. No great surprise that they're unique, if I'm honest.
    ANTON HERNANDEZ Igor
     - really? Only one other pick? Did you all miss the part where he signed for last year's WT-winning team? With two GT podiums?
    SABIDO Hugo Manuel Madeira
     - what can I say? I have a soft spot for Hugo. And he massively underscored last season compared with 2012, so here's hoping he can rekindle that form.
    TXURRUKA ANSOLA Amets
     - but? but? Amets?! I thought everyone liked him!
    OLIVEIRA Nelson Felipe Santos Simoes
     - Here's where I start to get a bit hopeful... Nelson was a bit of a nothing man at RadioLeopardNissanTrekShack, but has moved to Lampre to be Costa's wingman. This could work for me or against me, but we'll see.
    WESTRA Lieuwe
     - Major surprise number 1: only 4 teams with Westra? As we discussed earlier this week in the shoutbox, he is probably Astana's big hope for the classics and simultaneously able to perform there. A bargain, I thought.
    ARNDT Nikias
     - A bit of a risk, but I figured Kittel wouldn't score more than last year, so why not go for the rider who is following close in his compatriot's footsteps.
    BOARO Manuele
     - Major surprise number 2. It's about time for Manuele to start winning big. Fingers crossed, eh Flo?
    SILVESTRE Fabio Andre Tomas
     - Making the step up to WT with the new Trek team after a couple of successful seasons on Becca's baby squad. Probably the most talented young Portuguese rider since our reigning world champion. HIgh hopes!
