Update #3: Oz the Great and Powerful

As the famous Shakespearean quote goes, 'what's past is prologue'. Carrying that out as a cycling metaphor to this week's rankings, one would have to agree that if the first two weeks were a prologue, this was the first (mayyybe cat 2) mountaintop finish. The mammoth amount of points available this week dwarf the previous two, creating some serious head starts and some serious gaps (the top 6 scorers this week outscored the highest score of the first two weeks). Our season is longer than the 3 weeks of a grand tour, of course, and many key riders for this game haven't even turned a pedal in anger yet, so we can only carry the comparison so far - the old 'you can't win on the first mountain stage but you can definitely lose' is perhaps a tad too dramatic.

The Tour Down Under, although I'll admit was more exciting than I thought it would be, ended up fairly predictable in terms of CQ points. As places 1,2 and 4 were taken by the podium of the Aussie national RR, it's no surprise that our top scorers this week were among the same names that were already at the top in week 1. San Luis also provided some exciting racing, as we got to see what big stars were already in form (or perhaps in Quintana's case just so good that they destroy everyone even when not in top shape) and which were out for a nice summery training ride. As far as this game goes, some of the more popular picks seemed to be in the latter category and so did not collect the points bonanza of popular picks Gerdemann and Sanchez last week.

The top ten is quite the mixed bag between teams who were already there (6 of the top ten shift less than 3 spots) and those that have leapt quite dramatically up the standings this week. As probably could have been predicted, the all-Australian Wizard of Oz, already our number one, takes top honours with Gerrans, Evans, Porte, Haas and some dribs and drabs from other riders. With 1500 points already (500 ahead of second place), the only question is 'how long will it take the other teams to catch up'? With a relatively tame week coming up (two 1.1 races to kick off the European calendar) and some 2.1 races the week after - including another Australian race - it could very well be until Paris-Nice and the classics that the gap starts to close.

    This Week's Top Scorers

    1. Wizard of Oz - 1021
    2. riaroadtrip - 728
    3. just some guy - 710
    4. mutschi - 577
    5. Geraint Too Fast - 568

The top 2 overall from last week extend their lead by being the top 2 scorers this week. We've already talked about the Wiz, but riaroadtrip continues a hot streak and mixes it up by having Gerrans, Porte, and Quintana. Just some guy, on the strength of Evans/Gerrans combining for over 600 points, gets a few others here and there from Atapuma and others for third place.

    This Week's High Movers

    1. uspostal (+72)
    2. Ben1376 (+70)
    3. highoctane (+68)
    4. fraserhughes (+59)
    5. minessa (+58)

Here we see some new names, as big points + early season = lower teams moving up a ton. Uspostal got 231 of 281 total points this week (Arredondo and a good few 15-30 pointers), Ben 331 of 384 total points, and so on.

    Top ten overall:

    rank / (+/-) / Team name / Points

    1 (-) Wizard of Oz 1503
    2 (-) Riaroadtrip 1074
    3 (+18) Just Some Guy 952
    4 (-) Geraint Too Fast 869
    5 (+41) Mutschi 760
    5 (-2) Ferminal 760
    7 (+36) ItalianGigolo 749
    8 (-2) Ruvu75 726
    9 (-3) 18-Valve 717
    10 (+8) lenissart 713

I was thinking of doing a feature called 'best unique pick of the week', as I figured it'd be easy since I remembered reading in the CN thread about Jancouver picking Gaimon, and for some reason I remembered that being the only team with it (even though it says in the thread otherwise). Of course, simple also has Gaimon, so although it's a great pick, there are 2 reaping the benefit. Perhaps 'best rare pick' would work. Definitely Gaimon is good, and definitely Haas (Oz, mutschi, Tigerion and Ben1376) has a few people feeling very satisfied. 20 teams had Gerrans and 17 had Quintana, so that's a leg up for a small portion of the teams, but obviously not enough to qualify as 'rare' (I'd say less than 5 would be rare). Perhaps we can do this in the future.

Finally, at the bottom of things, the good news is every team has scored points as of this week! The bad news is that the bottom 20 teams haven't yet cracked 100 points overall. But like I said at the top, it's a long season - you know that when Phillip Gaimon or Adam Hansen is outscoring your team that a) it's not going great yet, but more importantly b) it's still really early going.

Its those pesky time zones again..... :angry

Yeah, that was a bit frustrating this week. I had set aside time in the morning (for me in CST) to do the update since it's usually out by the time I wake up, but come 11:30 (which is, what, 4:30pm CET? 5:30?), it still wasn't there. Piecing together from a post in the CN thread, the update came out less than an hour after that, but I had already moved on with my daytime commitments (which involved not being at a computer at all) and couldn't get to it until after dinner (now). And, of course, I'm a bit detailed, so it took a bit of time...

Either way, pardon the delay. I hope you guys like the update.

The time zones comment was meant to be humorous i haven't seen any cycling yet because of timezones & I'd just listened to a podcast regarding timezones, but as 2 people have now picked up on the comment, I'm now explaining it here.

Believe me I'm grateful that someone, somewhere is working this out.. My lack of available technology means I could never do it myself.. ;0))

    Great updates skidmark!

About my team, January was a month to mitigate losses. Anyway, some points were delivered courtesy of the Bongo popular duo Linu/Lulu, and Nizzolo (whose success is vital to the team) got a stage win that is a nice 2014 prologue, what makes it an OK kinda month.

For me, the TDU/San Luis wasn't that successful. A couple of points here and there, but not much.
I haven't looked into who of my riders is lined up for the early February races, although I know that Lappers had better lap up some points in the Herald Sun Tour. :D

My post in the winners/not so winners thread...

    January Update

As we have no more racing this month, and a busy February ahead of us, I thought I would do a quick count-up of this January's winners, and the VR CQ teams who get the bragging rights as we await the start of the European season.

The success of Simon Gerrans #champau in his homeland have put those teams with him selected out in front. 18 Valve, JSG and Dim all benefit. 18 Valve's selection of Lulu #cajarural, and JSG's of Cadel Evans #bmc keep them a point clear of our beloved leader, while August and Arbs can also hold their head up high after a successful first month of the season.

The popularity of Michael Hepburn #champau and Luis Leon Sanchez #cajarural mean that 18 of the teams on the current list of 30 have chalked up wins already. Bonus points to Trudgin (Debesay #mtn), Zam (Modolo #lampre) and Arbs (Porteborg #sky) who have unique winners so far.

Bicing will be weeping after popular consensus robbed Marcel Kittel #giant of his win in the People's Thingy Crit, but we can all expect to see the German featuring high up this list as the season progresses. Meanwhile I sit in esteemed company with the Velorooms collective team and 10 others who have so far failed to find the top step of the podium.

The season is still young - let's see what February brings.

Yep only two others have Rabottini :win this is why I picked him, he won't win much, maybe not at all but a few top 5 in Italian one day races will get him a nice score.

Update #4: Kazistuta states his case, as Lamme Frans leaps forward

If skidmark has posted the updates covering the 'prologue' to the season, I am taking on these next two transitional/transfer stages.   I'll be followed by Geraint Too Fast as he carries us through into March, then search takes over until the Ronde.

Hugo Koblet will post the updates for Pais Vasco, P-R, the Ardennes and Romandie. 2011 champion insgve will be at the helm for the Giro and Scandinavian races in May and TeoSheva in June for the Dauphine and Suisse (from where he hopes to be able to report from the roadside).

EvanIsTheBest hopes to be available for the Tour. Geraint comes back and this time gets some WT action in a three week stint before the Vuelta. The Spanish GT will be covered by shalgo, with The Hitch stepping in for the World Champs and Giro di Lombardia. The final updates will be done by Hugo, skidmark and perhaps myself with Hugo to crown the 2014 Champion.

As may have been anticipated not many points scored this week and indeed no rider selected more the 7 times in the game scored over 10 points this week.  Kazisuta makes a move into the top 10 with a combined 53 points from Finetto (48) and R. Feillu (5).  ironsscally also with Finetto, this time paired with 5 points from Bongiorno and 6 from Polanc to be this week's top scorer and in doing so moves off the bottom of the table.

    This Week's Top Scorers

    1. ironsscally -59
    2. Kazistuta - 53
    3. LaFlorecita - 52
    4. EvansIsTheBest - 48
    4. ray200 - 48

36 points from Degenkolb's first outing is enough to lift Lamme_Frans up 20 places, while the first race of the Italian calendar sees the all italian selection of Zam_Olyas jump 18 spots.

    This Week's High Movers

    1. Lamme_Frans (+20)
    2. Zam_Olyas (+18)
    3. ray200 (+17)
    4. bicing (+14)
    5. Açordas_Team   (+10)
    5. LightBing (+10)
    5. ingsve (+10)

Only movement in the top 10 is Kazistuta coming in, with 18-Valve. (pithy) making way

    Top ten overall:

    1. (-)   wizard_of_oz 1522
    2. (-)   riaroadtrip 1081
    3. (-)   just some guy 952
    4. (-)   Geraint Too Fast 874
    5. (-)   mutschi 767
    6. (+5) Kazistuta   765
    7. (-2) Ferminal 760
    8. (-1) ItalianGigolo 749
    9. (-1) Ruvu75 733
    10. (-) lenissart 727

Also worthy of note this week was the Cyclo-Cross World Championships, but the performance of Van der Haar gave little indication of his likely point scoring for his 5 teams, as he looks to do a full(ish) road season for Giant Shimano development team.  However there are 36 teams that will be feeling reassured that they have a very special talent on their team.
