Baaden-Cooke updates on the Horner saga:
http://www.sbs.com.au/cyclingcentral/video/124975171833/Baden-Cooke-Interview

Basically :
- Lampre really keen
- want a mentor for the younger riders
- deal in a week-or-so
- don't expect it to fall through, but a couple of other teams interested
- Horner like a fine wine - getting better with age
- if not signed because of his age - it is discrimination  :D

Hmmm, methinks they are doing some other type of due diligence  ;)

    - don't expect it to fall through

I pretty much expect either to fall through or back-fire spectacularly.

I am also slightly biased... I wanted #rainbow to be the focus for Lampre this season, rather than Horner. It's a Catch 22... he will either win lots and have doping implied at every turn, or fail miserably and distract from what would hopefully be a successful year for the likes of Costa and Ulissi.

Just in case you're wondering: Yes, Gavazzi had a two-year suspension (for cocaine). So it's no departure from the regular #christina policy.

It's almost like they looked at the CQ ranking (filtered for Italians only) and checked which riders didn't have a contract yet: They saw Santambrogio but knew they couldn't afford him (or he said no), Pinotti has retired, and 39-year old Baliani was a bit old. Gavazzi was simply next in line. :fp

#lampre and every other team would have known about Pappa Horner, and would have been resigned to not signing him. So there is obviously a reason why they originally didn't want to sign him and it isn't obviously that much of a match made in heaven..so yes I agree with Cj I still don't fancy it.

Horner hasn't put in a whole season for a while, so I wouldn't think that he will feature that prominently so Costa should receive his dues. To race a full season at his age from start to finish is a stretch, but then again who knows what Horner can do?

Good for him - should get plenty of chances to be the main man there.

Was half thinking Sky might have had to sign him as their contractually obliged second Norwegian.  :P

Maybe they'll go for Svendsen instead, or Eddy might end up leaving, or maybe the contract clause was an old fish wife's tale.

I quote from the joke thread: :D

So far he's followed this curve almost to a dot (yes, I know he's had injury problems, but bear with me): 76 points when there were two more years left (2012), 690 points with one more year left (2013) - meaning he'll reach at least 1200 this year.
    Paris-Roubaix? Why not. :)

Why? They have Mohoric, Viviani, Moser and Bennett - all young with big potential. With the money freed up by Sagan leaving they could chase a decent young climber/tt'er or two like Dennis, Keldermann, Kwiatowski or Majka when they come off contract. When Basso leaves they won't have any GT worthy climbers, so maybe they should start looking at filling that gap.

Wrong Giro catch I think, Santa is believed to have told everything. So a six month ban from when he tested positive. CWO would be able to sign him.

But would CW* (no more O, Onfone have left as sponsor) be able to pay Santambrogio? Depends on the "new Italian sponsor".
And who would the other *it signings be then, I'm pretty sure they're all connected one way or another.

I didn't think of it that way. But it still sounds unlikely - why would a Continental team (even one with a "reputation" like #christina) give a DS job to a guy who's running a granfondo team?

True. So Usai could have gotten a sweet deal from an old mate.
    I still find it unlikely.

Unless that was meant as a question. The answer would be: Yes, it does. How much money, nobody knows; but three *it riders and two *it DSs were mentioned in the #christina press release.

By the way, they once again had the brilliant idea to schedule their press conference for the starting day of the Copenhagen Sixdays - the biggest cycling event in *dk apart from Danmark Rundt. :fp
