Why be good for Costa , he gets the tour plus whatever stage races he wants.

Horner will ride mfor others, plus darkside aside he reads a race better than most, last few yeras Horner has not ridden a lot of km, I think this is good for Costa, media limelight is on the old boy now, and Costa will not loose a race day that he was targeting.

Ofc the nuclear bomb may explode in lampre's hand but that's for the darkside.

Hmm, it's just that Horner seems to be a bit of work to keep happy from a management POV, then there's the ongoing Mantua investigation.... Costa would like a team that is running more harmoniously than how Lampre appears ATM. At least Ulissi is riding well.

I guess that Lampre figured they are probably going down anyway :D

Cooke has come out looking the goods though!

    My thinking exactly.

And imagine my relief when I read this:

    Quote from: Cookie
“Obviously they’ve got Rui Costa for the Tour… he and Horner really only cross paths in one race. They’re two of the strongest guys in the world and they’re going to keep them on separate programs.”

Well Horner is on a one year deal as well apparently. Really makes me wonder. Why in a year when there is no competition for WT would you not sign the riders you sign that have points for 2013 to two year deals to make sure you have them on your roster in 2013 when IAM and Alonso's team is coming?

If I remember rightly, they offered Costa a 3-year deal, but he only wanted 1, at least initially. I have a feeling he has something lined up for 2015 already...

Perhaps I remember wrongly... this is the quote from Costa that I was (partially)-remembering

    Quote
“The easiest thing is just to sign for three years because you’re guaranteed a good contract and it takes pressure off you, but I don’t agree with that mentality,” he said. “The easiest way isn’t always the best way to go. I think the most correct and fair thing to both parties is to sign for a year so we get to know ourselves better and adapt to each other.”

True both of them have been linked with Alonso, and I understand why they agree to a 1 year for Costa, who had other options. However Horner had nowhere else to go, they should have said two years or nothing.

Except that you have to be pretty much insane to offer a 42-year old a 2-year contract in any professional sport! If Lampre really want Papi for his "mentoring" of the young riders, put him on a rolling monthly contract and as soon as his body gives out, put him out to pasture. I appreciate that this might not be allowed under UCI rules, so maybe 1 year was the best they could do...

The second year is all about the points. If Costa and Horner both leave how will Lampre secure another WT license? Ulissi likely won't have enough points by himself, and Cunego will likely be banned. That is why giving Horner a two year makes sense. Because you get to use his Vuelta points to get a WT licence in 2015.

Ulissi alone will probably get more points than Europcar.

With probably IAM Cycling, MTN and Alonso applying for WT licenses, the fight for points this year at the bottom of the table will be hard fought  :cool

Team Alonso have already said they dont mind if they dont get WT if they get a team together that will secure wildcards, but there's also talk that UCI will reduce the number of WT teams - so yeah should be pretty tight. (and this thread will see a lot of action as teams go after point heavy riders)
