the problem with this is that he ahs done this already in the past and he just threw away any real riding at the Vuelta that time in order to go out drinking with Fabs

Well no, he came 2nd in the Tour that year so obviously Vuelta was not a priority. My point was that if he goes for the Tour and it fails he can fall back on the Vuelta and worlds afterwards. If he podiums the Tour he doesnt need to fall back on them.

Another difference is that these worlds do suit Andy, more than any others ever have or will. 2010 was a Hushovd worlds.

  • Despite the self-serving data benders and associated propaganda to the contrary, I am led to believe that there are pockets of organised, highly sophisticated dopers, even within 'new age' cycling teams. Personally, I don't accept that the 'dark era' has ended, it has just morphed into a new guise.

Andy did very well today, he's come a long way since getting dropped on every climb at the start of the year. I don't think he will do much in GC, but I hope to see him take a mountain stage in the Tour. :)

I would love to see him lose some time in the first week so that he is not a GC threat, then have a real crack at the KOM.  I think it could be fun for him as the pressure would be much lower than trying to win, but it would do him good to lean to ride with some strategy and really have to out think and out duel some clever riders... also he can TT as slow as he wants and it wont matter.

Great, Doc's give him the all clear.

Andy Schleck to start LBL and Romandie.

Pain in knee is just normal cycling cartilage wear and tear.

My money is on him not completing either race.

I have never been a fan of Shlecklet, he has always appeared to me to be a spoilt brat.  This result, and all of the history over the last 3 years confirm it.

He wants to be a "leader" without ever having earned it.  I doubt that his TdF win was in fact a "win" and look at any results he got back then as anamolous.  We are seeing the real Schleck.

He needs to go get a job in a factory.

COMMUNIQUÉ VUN TREK: Andy Schleck Announces Retirement

(Mondorf-les-Bains, Luxembourg) - After nine years at the top of the sport, Trek Factory Racing standout Andy Schleck announced this morning that he will retire from professional cycling. The young Luxembourger’s career was forced to an untimely end by the knee injury he sustained in a Tour de France crash earlier this year.

“I’m obviously disappointed to end my career like this,” said Schleck. “I would have liked to keep on fighting but my knee just doesn’t allow it. Since my crash in the UK there has hardly been any progress. While the ligaments have healed, the damaged cartilage is another story. I have been working hard on rehabbing the knee but came to the hard realization that at the risk of irreversibly injuring it, this is the best course of action.”

In his storied career, Schleck rode to victory on some of cycling’s biggest stages, stepping four times onto Grand Tour podiums. Among his many notable accomplishments, Schleck won the 2010 Tour de France and triumphed in the 2009 Liège-Bastogne-Liège after a courageous solo breakaway. Schleck highlights his win on the Galibier stage of the 2011 Tour de France as one of his most memorable achievements.

Though only 29 years old, Schleck has made a lasting impact on the sport, and his presence in the pro peloton will surely be missed. Well-loved by fans and teammates alike, Schleck’s legacy will be his good nature, strength of character, and sportsmanship. In his years at the highest level of the sport, Schleck distinguished himself as a humble, hard-working and earnest competitor.

“Andy was an instant and natural fit for the Trek family when we first met him with LEOPARD-TREK," said Trek VP Joe Vadeboncoeur. "It has always been more about family than anything else at Trek, and so it is with Andy. On top of that, Andy is one of the most talented cyclists of all time. Many of my best days as a cycling fan have been while watching Andy race. We have celebrated the great days and endured the difficult ones alongside him. I know great things are ahead for Andy. He will always have friends and a family at Trek.”

At the unfortunate end of a career of limitless potential, Schleck is quick to keep things in perspective. “Cycling has been my life for many years and I will need time to figure out what I’d like to do. Luckily I can count on my family, friends, and Trek who have always supported me,” he said. "I am very happy to have trained and raced alongside my brother and to have made some of the best friends that I have. I have always said that cycling is not the beginning and the end of my life. I have a wonderful girlfriend and a wonderful son. I’m excited to find out what lies ahead.”

I bumped this thread thinking that I'd at least have something snarky to say, but I realize that mostly, I just don't care.

Since Andy's early arrival on the pro scene, Liggett was hyping him as The Next Big Thing. "Future Tour Winner." "Future Star."

An endorsement from the worn out "voice of cycling," followed by the endless fawning by both P&P, was enough turn me off from the Brothers Schleck without a second thought, and for good.

In the end, all I can really offer is: Good Bye.

I think it is sad someone has to quite cycling at the age of 29, whatever the reason is. The Schlecks were rock and roll on a bike, for a - good - wile. I had a proportinal dislike for the guy because of his whining about dangerous desceents but the kid could ride a bike, and, with style.

How he did that is for another part of this forum...

yep, yesterday I realized as well how easy it is to forget about all the good years after just ~2 bad seasons. (edit: 3)

that press conference was also very emotional, and being asked about his best memories during his cycling career he said standing on the podium together with his brother, winning the Tour de France stage to the Galibier, and Liege-Bastogne-Liege.

its true that the circumstances probably have to be discussed in another forum, but you don't see a gc contender (successfully) attack in the Tour de France with 60km to go every year anymore, and that win in Liege was indeed one of the best in recent years.

Early Andy nwas bonkers, said on twitter the other day when someone asked best race memories

2007 Giro , I mean when it comes full blown GTs 2007 giro right up there, and tne skinny boy road it white in style

and I would add 2009 cobble stage, put his mind too it, stuck to fabs wheel top 5.

The issues when he started to believe his own mail, unkle Bjarne saw it, tried the tough love after the pub night with Stewie all went pair shaped after that

still hasn't gotten over chaingate, says he's always waited for Contador (liar, he ignores that moment 2 weeks earlier when he attacked while everyone else got held up behind his brother's crash, and that was the only moment he ever got the chance to wait for Contador) and says he is a better person than Contador

    Sounds bitter and jealous

he should have kept his mouth shut
