When I used to ride trails, I'd jam the chainring on something every once in a while. A log, a ditch, something. I suppose that might be more hazardous in such a situation. I can't see it being much of an issue on a road bike. Until you crashed and bent the chainring and couldn't ride home.

You know whose opinion I would value on this, though? Busted knuckle or RDV4Roubaix. But RDV4 has gone off the forums, leaving bk all alone. I don't know who else has that good LBS experience.
