Tour de France '14 CQ game
« on: June 22, 2014, 00:46 »
And here we go again:

Rules
Team of exactly nine riders. Teams with fewer riders will be filled out with cheapest riders available (if two or more riders are the joint cheapest, the rider whose name comes first alphabetically shall be used). If quota of nine cannot be reached in this manner (eg, 8 riders totalling exactly 4000, no free riders starting race) team will be disqualified.

Riders selected who do not start the Tour, or who are excluded from the game because of a ban (see below) will be replaced, if it is possible within budget, by the next most expensive from their own team, otherwise as above.

Where a team has nine riders but is over budget, the cheapest rider whose price is at least equal to the overspend, will be replaced according to the same principle.

Teams with more than 9 riders will have their most expensive pick(s) removed from their squad.

Budget
4000 points (as has been the case on the two previous versions of this game)

Price of riders
CQ current score as at 29th June, with points accumulated over 12 months leading up to that date, for which the update file that CQ release on Monday 30th will be considered definitive.

There is a spreadsheet at dropbox here that might help you compile your team.

Rider eligibility
As previously, any rider who has been under a ban for any part of the period during which their price is calculated is not eligible.
The only riders that I am aware of thus affected are Frank Schleck and Mick Rogers: please let me know if you spot others.

Submitting your team
By personal message to me.
Do not attempt to send in your team before the finalised price list is available (30th June)
PLEASE use the CQ format for names (surname then first name, nothing else at all): it makes an enormous difference to the time it takes to log teams.

I shall endeavour to have my team ready on the first day after the price list is released and submit it to the first to submit a team (It was sent to Dazed and Confused on Tuesday evening) so that there can be confidence that I didn't pick from among the best of everyone else's ideas.

Deadline

Saturday 5th July 1100 BST/1200 CET (Start time of the race)

Scoring

Points issued according to the points tables of CQ (column GT1). Note there are no points issued for the young rider category.

Per the precedent set in relation to Di Luca and Santambrogio in the 2013 Giro, riders sanctioned for doping offences shall retain their points for the purposes of this game unless the CQ website removes them before publishing the final result on the final day of the race (which seems most unlikely)

I had a plan for this race

2 rider and 3000 points are gone, 4000 is really hard this year.

Just had a look see .

I do wonder if it makes the game too reliant on the winner of the GC being in your team.

so it becomes a bit 1 dimensional?

If it's like last year, and the eventual winner takes the lead on the second weekend and keeps it to the end, you're going to have to include him anyway.

Comparing Froome with 1250pts last year to Quintana (698)...

    FroomeQuintana Diff
    Overall 600 450 +150
    Mountains 50 80 -30
    Points 2 0 +2
    TTT 8 1 +7
    Stage Wins 240 80 +160
    Other Podiums 85 50 +35
    Other Placings 5 37 -32
    Leader 260 0 +260

So of the 552 pt difference, 260 or almost half came through leader's jerseys

FWIW since it'll be much closer this year, I think the winner won't have that many stage wins and days in yellow.

    Post Merge: June 23, 2014, 12:24
And you also need to take into account that Froome's cost was 3 times Nairo's cost. So that would make Nairo the better pick.

It may be closer but that doesn't necessarily mean the lead will change often or that the eventual winner won't spend the majority of the race in yellow.

And no Quintana wasn't the better pick because it would have been virtually impossible to win the game without Froome, but the same cannot be said of Quintana.

The dropbox file has now been updated with CQ prices to 22 June: these are still not the confirmed starting prices, but will be closer to them for most riders.  I've also made changes to the squads for Astana, Omega and FdJ.

Perhaps someone could confirm whether it still works.

    I guess we'll see, eh.

Either way I believe it is perfectly possible to win the game without the eventual GC winner in your team. Maybe not last year, but this year, definitely.

But with Quintana you could have picked other high scorers.... I have not calculated this exactly but I think you could have picked Quintana, Kreuziger and Kittel for roughly the cost of Froome.

Dropbox spreadsheet now has updates on many teams, but prices still provisional until Monday evening.

    Monday 8:45 pm
Spreadsheet now has the team lists that have been announced today. I believe only Orica are still to announce. Keeping a frequent eye on CQ for when the download is available.

Now quarter past midnight, and CQ has still not posted update.  I need to get some sleep.  I'll check in the morning, but it is now unlikely that I'll be able to post real prices on the spreadsheet until after work Tuesday.

With 4500 to spend You can get both Froome and Contador in a team together.

    I have 2 teams ready

    1 I did with riders I like,

1 Just came on after messing around with the 4500 team, it might do very well

Not sure what to do confused of Stockholm

No 2 teams allowed AC? :angel

My head, I understand the budget fkr the game is 4000, but flo and I were having a chat.

I said I think if the budget was 4500 I coukd get both CF and AC in a team, together they would require finding 7 riders for 444, I was able to do this, but alas we only nave 4000 to spend

Ah OK, thought I was going mad.

I can't see myself having time to select a team; so if the powers that be are OK with it, I could submit your 'B' team and see that you got a modicum of credit for any success it achieves. And obviously I'd disown it completely if it turned out to be rubbish.

If I were to find out about such a thing I would probably be shocked, appalled, disgusted, and forced to question whether it is worth continuing to live other than as a hermit, yet alone to run the game.  So it's just as well I didn't read that proposal, and that even if I had read it I would have forgotten by the time the game starts.

OK, CQ are now a day later than expected with the "weekly" update, and people need to be able to get on and finalise their teams, so I am taking an executive decision, I'm waiting no longer. The game is to be played on the basis of CQ rankings as of 22 June, ie, the version already in the spreadsheet.

Lucky for you if your selected rider did well in the Nat Champs recently, bad news if he had a good week in late June 2013.

Teams had already been submitted based on 29 June prices, and so, with enormous embarrassment and lumps of wasted time, lets go back to where we were: 29 June prices.

The spreadsheet has the 22 9 man teams that have all now been announced.

The spreadsheet has the 22 9 man teams that have all now been announced.

    CQ fail.
I'd guess that Vincenzo will become suddenly very popular. I was banking on two big names dropping 100 points each, so I more or less have to start again from scratch. :fp

okay, so here they are, all teams and their value (double check please before submitting a team)

Several of the scores I'd taken off the current CQ list yesterday are different, so I checked again and still different. :S
    Frankly, I'm lost.
I think they have updated, but not added the download????

CQ eventually posted, lets go with that.

Teams had already been submitted based on 29 June prices, and so, with enormous embarrassment and lumps of wasted time, lets go back to where we were: 29 June prices.

Apologies: I can only defend myself by saying that it has probably wasted more of my time than yours.

Sorry, I don't understand it. Prices as of June 29 or the current?

Sorry about the confusion: we are back to plan A, prices as in the 29 June download.

That is the current download: if you look up individual scores on CQ you will find daily updates, but to have a spreadsheet that can be used to run the game, I have to rely on a weekly spreadsheet of the data as of last Sunday night.

That can be downloaded from the CQ site, or you can use the spreadsheet at Dropbox linked in the OP.
