GPS Devices?
« on: August 24, 2014, 11:03 »
After my bike was stolen a while back and I suffered the travails of a British winter, I have a new machine (see other thread) and I am looking to get back into the swing of things and kit up.

I am Looking for something affordable and cheap, but at the same time reliable. I just need the basics when it comes to data/GPS.
The Garmin Edge 500/510 look pretty good for my needs, but I wanted to know if there is anything else out there I should know about and consider which may be better value for money..

Any thoughts?

Ive ditched the garmin now and just use my phone on a handlebar mount, but admittedly, most phone mounts are a little bulky. Phones only really useful if you arent doing mega long rides as obviously you have much more limited battery range. I carry two batteries anyway, so ive always got enough for a good long ride.

Folks here mostly use devices by Bryton or Garmin.

I have no experience with the former - they are very cheap and at least one (French) pro team uses them - but even a second-hand Garmin Edge will do a great job.

I have lots of gripes with Garmin but I guess I still keep buying them. :D

I use the now previous version of the Edge 800 with a standard O-ring mount on the stem. I do a lot of navigation with it and have even run it successfully without a base map during a trip to the US.

New Garmin 1000 is almost like phone, too big really...for my taste. As from LBS view lot of those has been sold and no wonder that some has issues, Garmin company is nasty mother fliper when comes to parts...but no alternative.
