The Country Music Thread
« on: September 15, 2014, 20:52 »
So since we are several posters loving true country music here, I thought it was good starting thread.

I'm particularly fond of the "outlaw country" movement and Waylon Jennings is my hero!

When you listen to his "Don't You Think That Outlaw Bit's ...", listen to James Hetfield's cover and tell me that Country music >> Heavy Metal.  :P

Then when I'm reading too much crap about the Tour of France on CN, I'm listening to Don Williams' country ballads and I'm at peace.  :D

(Lloyd Green on the pedal steel is driving this one)

As I said on the shoutbox, the great thing about country music is that you still have some recent great songs. So Whitey Morgan in 2007:

..and I'm also very fond of some Québécois and Acadians *ca singing country in French. So for example Pierre Guillemette and his ode to Johnny Cash (in the typical Cash style)

There used to be a cool video of Waylon and Neil Young on Nashville Now doing "Are You Ready For The Country", but sadly it seems to be no more on Youtube. Ralph's probably to blame.  :lol

Can't have a country thread without Kitty.

There used to be a cool video of Waylon and Neil Young on Nashville Now doing "Are You Ready For The Country", but sadly it seems to be no more on Youtube. Ralph's probably to blame.  :lol

Talking about deleted clips on YT, my intention was to share the "Lost Oulaw Concert" by Waylon, which once was full on YT. Apparently no more in one single clip but you can have it as "playlist". That's what I tried to share but apparently VR only embeds the first clip of it, so "Are you ready ...". Okay I don't really mind, though it's not my fave from the concert.

    Great tribute to Waylon:

[Porter Wagoner - A Satisfied Mind]

Have always loved those lyrics. The "be happy with what you got" stuff

Particularly like The Byrds' cover of it. Their first attempt at a country rock song. The famous jingle jangle Byrds sound works perfectly with that song. I think it was suggested by bluegrass mandolin player Chris Hillman to McGuinn.

One of the best Belgian country cover bands in the French-speaking part: the Nashville Roots ! Here they covered Johnny Cash's Folsom Prison Blues.

The singer is a Brit but he's left the band now. I saw them last Friday. They're great!  :cool

Another French Canadian singer Irvin Blais: La 175 Nord. The highway between Quebec City and the Saguenay River (where Alaphilippe won the Coupe des Nations in 2012  :lol). Great rhythm in this song, bluegrass-ish, I'd say, no?

And one from a real French guy, this time. Michel Mallory - Le cowboy d'Aubervilliers

    Quote
C´est moi l´cow-boy d´Aubervilliers/it's me cowboy of Aubervilliers

I can't get enough of these two Waylon songs from the White Mansion album about the Southern Culture. Yes, I've always had sympathies for the South, for Dixie, even if I condemn slavery and the wars with Mexico. But perhaps it's my natural tendency to defend the lost causes and lost civilisation, who knows.

Southland's Bleeding and The Union Mare and the Confederate Grey

    Quote
    The Southland's Bleeding

    (Paul Kennerley)
    White Mansions, 1978

    ____________________________________________________________________________________

Lyrics sung by The Drifter (Waylon Jennings)
    ____________________________________________________________________________________

    the Southland's bleeding

the Union's pierced the heart of Dixie

    still our Generals are leading

with the courage to set us free

maybe it's time to count up all of the cost

we're just hoping there'll be some changes

    wishful thinking, we're headed downhill

they only way now is surrender

    but we're fighting still

you know there ain't no real chance

    for us to win this

there won't be no victory dance

    at the finish

    it's just - Southern pride

    it's just - stubborn blindness

    (GUITAR SOLO)

    no young man's adventure

holding on to a fading lifestyle

    maybe at first

    now it's terror running wild

there's no one willing to lend a helping hand

they say we're foolish and we can't blame them

let's stop this fighting while we can

it takes a brave man, but to end this killing

    it takes a braver man

you know there ain't no real chance

    for us to win this

there won't be no victory dance

    at the finish

    it's just - Southern pride

    it's just - stubborn blindness

    it's just - Southern pride

    it's just - stubborn blindness

    it's just - Southern pride

    it's just - stubborn blindness

    it's just - Southern pride

    it's just - stubborn blindness

    it's just - Southern pride
