A matter of taste
« on: November 12, 2014, 10:23 »
I noted the recent CN/BikeRadar article about the retro 1972 Colnago Super Pantografata which was held up, like most Colnagos, as a shining example of craftspersonship and aesthetic excellence.

I wouldn't argue with the quality and attention to detail but something about very retro bikes leaves me cold, just like a lot of the hideousness of today's matériel.

So what then are the components of aestheticism in bike design? Why does this resonate with me ...

... while these do nothing to elevate my troubled soul worn by earthly cares and woes?

How can a 1992 Colnago Master turn me on when a still more pampered model twenty years its senior turns me off?

And while I'm on my trip about obscure bike aesthetics, I really miss the days when Mavic did a groupset:

Just look at that rear mech. And here's another gorgeous, almost forgotten rear mech, the Sachs New Success with filled-in lower jockey:

And don't all write in saying it's because all this stuff is silver. I like black too!

So what's your definition of aesthetic beauty in bikes? What makes one bike gorgeous and another ugly?

Have you seen the Campag c record stuff from the 80's?......pure sex......just a shame those gorgeous brakes didn't work :)

On a different note, what is the world coming to when Campag take their styling cues from Shimano???

I couldn't agree more, but I will. Croce d'Aune was a veritable orgy of mechanical beauty.

When one witnessed the generous perfection of a fascia like this...

... why worry about what went on behind it?

this is a 1979 TT bike used by Hinault. look at the aero wheels, the front brake behind the fork, and the cables inside the handlebar. 1979  :o
