Tour of Rwanda
« on: November 14, 2014, 15:27 »
As controversy reigned in the build-up to the race, the week long Tour du Rwanda will finally kick off on Sunday. Three teams- Novo Nordisk Development Team, Switzerland's Loup Sport and Australia's Scody Down Under withdrew from the race a couple of days ago citing the Ebola scare as cause much to the chagrin of FERWACY (Rwanda's cycling federation) president Aimable Bayingana. Rwanda, an Ebola free country, in fact, screens all visitors from the USA, Spain and other nations where Ebola cases have been recorded.

In an interview to the Times, Bayingana said:
"It is very ridiculous that the teams pulled out citing Ebola as an excuse. Rwanda has not recorded any Ebola case."

But he reiterated the point that their absence would not be an issue as teams were lining up to replace them.

Home favourite Adrien Niyonshuti, who finished 9th last year despite injury, has confirmed that he won't participate in the race as plans are already under way for the 2015 season.

The race this year will feature a couple of new routes. Firstly, between Kigali and Kibungo in the Ngoma district and secondly, the 173km long stage between Rubavu and Nyanza.

Jock Boyer
“We’re as prepared as we can be…we are organized.”
“Everybody is really looking forward to the race. I think this year we’re more prepared than we’ve ever been”, he says.

Abraham Ruhumuriza
“We are ready”, says Ruhumuriza, the oldest of the team of 15 members, and five-time winner of the race. “We have strength, and we want to bring honor to our country”.

Turkish Airline is sponsoring Team Rwanda, providing jerseys and discount on tickets and free shipment for bicycles.
“Team Rwanda is probably the most successful, well-known in all sport ventures in Rwanda”, says Isler Burcin, Rwanda Manager for Turkish Airline. “They are successful on international level,” he says.
The livery will feature on their arms.

15 teams of five riders each will participate in the 2.2 classified race.

History
Until 2008, TOUR DU RWANDA was a regional cycling race that brought together Rwandans but also riders from neighboring Burundi, Tanzania, Uganda, ...

Upon his election to the head of the FERWACY in 2008, aided by the National Technical Director Jock Boyer, Aimable BAYINGANA, President, has worked to organize TOUR DU RWANDA internationally.

With Olivier Grandjean, consultant, expert and general coordinator, and with the support of Jean-Claude L’HERAULT very experienced in organizing international events, success was not long in coming and less 5 years, the TOUR DU RWANDA has risen in the leading (top 3) of racing cycling organizations on the African continent.

With the considerable assistance of MINISPOC and private economic partners, TOUR du RWANDA found its cruising speed and allows, each year in mid-November, to offer a magnificent sporting spectacle free for a week, and throughout the country to the people of Rwanda !

Through national and international media coverage of quality, beautiful landscape of the country of thousand hills are seen all over the world…
Each year, riders from far away (USA, Belgium, Canada, France, ...) or closest (Kenya, South Africa, Eritrea, Algeria, Gabon, ..) are challenging the Rwandan riders on their land ...

TOUR DU RWANDA allows African riders to highlight in the context of a passage in professional and well run in the top professional teams in the world’s elite. Thus, the first 3 of 2010 edition included a big team (Orica-Green Edge for Daniel Teklehaimanot, Team Europcar for NatnaelBerhane and Argos Shimano for Reinardt Van Rensburg)

The very international palmares( a Moroccan, an Eritrean, an American and a South African were winners) confirms the sport quality of TOUR DU RWANDA.

Of course, if this turns out someday to be the industry standard integrated handlebar-computer-braking solution then I'll eat my kevlar-reinforced aerodynamic hat.

Nice to see the locals get some success! :)

By the way, it's disgraceful that Novo Nordisk Devo, Loup Sport and Scody-Down Under have withdrawn citing ebola as a reason. Rwanda is about as far from West Africa as Portugal from the Donbass. Did anyone pull out from the Volta a Portugal?

And it's true - the US, Spain or Germany have had ebola cases and deaths. Rwanda hasn't.
It's like withdrawing from a US race because there's a civil war in Colombia. Nobody has ever done that, right? :fp
