The 2015 Winners and Not So Winners List
« on: January 12, 2015, 11:11 »
So which teams will be the last to get a win this year?

Last year Astana were the last WT squad to get onto the top step of the podium, and of course Novo Nordisk of the PCT teams didn't achieve that goal at all.

Nationals don't count.

I'll go with Trek for World Tour. And of course Novo Nordisk for PCT. I always wondered what's the story of this team. They are PCT but they have  no half decent cyclits. Why are they PCT anyways?

I always wondered what's the story of this team. They are PCT but they have  no half decent cyclits. Why are they PCT anyways?
When the team first became ProConti (2011), it had a combination of diabetic (Megias, Kerkhof, Verschoor etc.) and non-diabetic riders (Bodrogi, Efimkin, Kocjan, Reijnen etc.) - and actually won UCI races like that year's Tour of Rwanda (2.2) or Tour of Turkey (2.HC).

Starting in 2013 they (re-)introduced a "diabetics only" policy at the team. Interestingly coinciding with a sponsor change from Sanofi to Novo Nordisk; that may or may not have played a role, I don't know.
But the team continued as a ProConti team. Why? They registered in time, they paid the license fees - and unlike for the WorldTour, there is no requirement of any sporting standard to be ProConti. When team's applications are rejected (which happens rarely enough) it's always for financial reasons. If the 16+ riders you contract are actually able to win a race on the level they're going to ride at plays absolutely no role.

A discussion could be had if that is how it should be, or if teams should have to 'qualify' for ProConti. :shh ;)

Could be a few PCT teams that struggle to get that first win I feel.

#fantini look a very slim squad.

#rusvelo might have to wait till the first races in Russia.

#colombia only had two wins last year if we discount Nats and have lost Swampy and Chalapud.

#roompot look weak, but surely will pick something up in a ssr.

#uhc made some nice signings, but I still don't see too many wins from Brajkovic and Ratto.

Andrea Peron is half decent imo, not great no, but half decent yes. The rest of the team is more likely to win a participation medal than any other medal really though.

I think they are PCT so they can do the races they want, as far as moving from conti to pro conti I think the only requirement is that you give UCI more money.

  • Of course, if this turns out someday to be the industry standard integrated handlebar-computer-braking solution then I'll eat my kevlar-reinforced aerodynamic hat.
