  • Of course, if this turns out someday to be the industry standard integrated handlebar-computer-braking solution then I'll eat my kevlar-reinforced aerodynamic hat.

So what might happen from here on in?
    1   Shalgo   1647
    2   Hakkie   1480
    3   Rote_Laterne   1419
    4   Murali   1378
    5   Alykaptan   1330
    6   Diggercuz   1328
All other teams are another 50 points adrift or more.

    Shalgo
    CONTADOR VELASCO Alberto
    TROFIMOV Yury
    MODOLO Sacha
    ULISSI Diego
    BETANCUR GOMEZ Carlos Alberto
    CUNEGO Damiano
    ATAPUMA HURTADO Jhon Darwin
    PIRAZZI Stefano
    PETACCHI Alessandro

There might be some concern about Trofimov dropping down some spots: on the other hand, there are grounds to hope for more from Modolo.

    Hakkie
    CONTADOR VELASCO Alberto
    GENIEZ Alexandre
    KREUZIGER Roman
    ULISSI Diego
    BETANCUR GOMEZ Carlos Alberto
    CUNEGO Damiano
    ATAPUMA HURTADO Jhon Darwin
    ELISSONDE Kenny
    BASSO Ivan

I think all optimism for for Elissonde is suspended, so we are looking at the balance between fear that Geniez will struggle against hope for Kreuziger to push on: no potential for the sprint stages.

    Rote Laterne
    CONTADOR VELASCO Alberto
    KÖNIG Leopold
    KREUZIGER Roman
    BETANCUR GOMEZ Carlos Alberto
    HOFLAND Moreno
    RICHEZE ARAQUISTAIN Ariel Maximiliano
    BELKOV Maxim
    JI Cheng
    RUFFONI Nicola
Konig might have potential to move up if Amador is to falter: Kreuziger might let him get closer to Shalgo, but is shared with Hakkie.  The failure of Ulissi or Cunego cou;d be good news for RL

    Murali
    CONTADOR VELASCO Alberto
    TIRALONGO Paolo
    MODOLO Sacha
    ULISSI Diego
    ZAKARIN Ilnur
    GRETSCH Patrick
    QUINTANA ROJAS Dayer Uberney
    SABATINI Fabio
    STAMSNIJDER Tom
I suspect that Tiralongo and Zakarin have done whatever they will do: not sure where Murali can improve relative to other top teams in the mountains except the possible re-arrival of the Betancur that we had seen for the previous 18 months.
Modolo could enable Murali to put some pressure on the podium.

    Alykaptan
    ARU Fabio
    LANDA MEANA Mikel
    KREUZIGER Roman
    ULISSI Diego
    BETANCUR GOMEZ Carlos Alberto
    ATAPUMA HURTADO Jhon Darwin
    ELISSONDE Kenny
    RUFFONI Nicola
    POZZOVIVO Domenico

The joker in the pack: suffered the loss of a big spend in Pozzovivo, doesn't have Contador, and still in the top 5.  If disaster were to befall Contador, obviously in prime position to benefit, but otherwise, can expect to lose 90 pink jersey points to everyone else in the top 10, and would have to hope that Astana can mug Alberto on the MTFs as on Sunday.  To be weighed up against that, Landa might overtake Amador, but his other climbers are either at their peak or shared with immediate competitors.

    Diggercuz
    CONTADOR VELASCO Alberto
    TIRALONGO Paolo
    MODOLO Sacha
    BETANCUR GOMEZ Carlos Alberto
    ATAPUMA HURTADO Jhon Darwin
    APPOLLONIO Davide
    ZABEL Rick
    WATSON Calvin
    POZZOVIVO Domenico

Will wonder what might have been if it had not been for Pozzovivo's fall, but otherwise would need about 12 more sprint finishes lacking Nizzolo and Viviani to make an assault on the podium.

If you want to analyze your own team's trials and tribulations to date, here is the dropbox spreadsheet thus far.

    Standings
Shalgo was fourth in terms of the effect of today's racing, much higher than others near the top: his lead increases, despite my prediction above of Trofimov losing ground.  Two Astanas in the top 3 of GC, and a stage win, raise Alykaptan to within a point of the podium, but a few more pink jersey bonuses to his rivals will probably push him back down.  DJW replaces AG in the top ten  and becomes the second highest non-Contadorista, overtaking Postmanhat, who suffers the biggest fall.  Josedin rises 7 places, to the threshhold of the top ten, but The Green Monkey moves up even more places, from 41st to 31st.

    Stage 17
I won't be able to do a full update this evening, and might be fairly late with tomorrow's:

    Guaranteed on the day

Modolo was the cheapest of the main sprinters for the race, and therefore the most popular, but is set to be the most successful as well.
    MODOLO Sacha   70   29 teams
    NIZZOLO Giacomo   40   2 teams
    MEZGEC Luka   25   7 teams

    PORSEV Alexander   3   1 team
    REZA Kévin   2   1 teams

    Projection and totals
I need to leave soon to be away overnight, so can't do a full analysis.  I believe that there are very few GC changes, so basically, if you gained in the stage points, you will have moved up; if you have Viviani (losing sprint competition places) or Barbin (DNF), you might have dropped a bit.

    Stage 18

    Guaranteed points today
A collective fail of major proportions in terms of stage picks today
    GILBERT Philippe   70   0 team
BONGIORNO Francesco Manuel   40   0 team
    CHAVANEL Sylvain   25   0 team
CONTADOR VELASCO Alberto   18   12 teams
    BUSATO Matteo   15   0 team
    MOINARD Amaël   10   0 team
DE LA CRUZ MELGAREJO David   7   0 team

    SIUTSOU Kanstantsin   3   0 team
    HAGA Chad   2   0 team
    WEENING Pieter   1   1 team

Well done to Not My Circus: the only manager to have anyone in the top ten today (although only just), but not having Contador, still forced down to 13th on the day.

Family situation that has taken me away for some days recently looks to have upscaled from tragedy to disaster.

Very likely that I will be away for several days now.  Can't say when I will be able to do any more on this.

If anyone is feeling brave/foolhardy enough, spreadsheet thus far and instructions are here

The slump in Trofimov's GC place wasn't enough to place Shalgo in any real danger.  If he had not been out in the lead, it would have been an incredibly tight podium, as there are only 6 points between 2nd and 4th.  Alykaptan did very well to make the podium without having Contador, and those two late stages for Aru were key to his late revival.  I didn't come as near the bottom as usual, and the Collective Wisdom team had, I suspect, it's worst ever performance.

Stage points because it is meaningless to talk of them as guaranteed anymore:

Thanks to all who had a go, congratulations to Shalgo and anyone pleased with their performance, sorry for the intermittent service during the in-laws' family crises, and thanks for your comments.

And if you can think about any form of analysis I haven't included, or if you are prone to micro-evaluation of what did or didn't happen for your team, here is the final spreadsheet.
