Zabriskie's bike - Seriously?
« on: May 22, 2012, 01:02 »
Just had a read of the article on Dave Zabriskie's bike.

http://www.cyclingnews.com/features/pro-bike-dave-zabriskies-cervelo-r5-vwd

Apparently its a good thing that the mechanic has drilled his own holes in the frame to fit Di2.  Really?  I would have thought that - other than the stresses put into the surrounding carbon at the time the drilling was done - it would be a bit concerning to have a battery hanging off a couple of holes that have been drilled into an area of carbon that wasn't designed for that type of load.  Having seen a carbon frame break just from having another bike fall on it at a cafe stop, the decision seems a bit odd.

In the past, something like this would be done as a special by the factory itself.  Now, not so much...

Done by the Garmin mechannic according to the write-up...

Thats my question - if it was necessary to put Di2 on a team bike, why wasn't it doen by Cervelo?

It really interesting me and here it what I found, you can buy R5 with Di2

but who the hell is drilling that frame is question, when frame is not Di2 friendly, here is interesting answer from cervelo guy Damon Rinard, Senior Advanced R&D Engineer
Vroomen.White.Design on forum (do not drill holes) ;D he said, go external, no matter it is ugly as hell!
    http://forums.cervelo.com/forums/p/9594/66441.aspx, really interesting!

Also what that guy did is beyond me, what are those wires in seat post picture 1???
    http://forums.cervelo.com/forums/p/8946/61903.aspx

So it is obviously that spending 10 000$ requires some drilling afterwards 8), I mean it is same as buying Lamborghini and drilling holes for mounting side mirrors  :fp

Go external Cervelo said, no internal :o
