Crash Helmet switch...
« on: August 07, 2015, 12:15 »
The need to make liquid some cash at Cuckoo towers set me off on a selling spree of kit recently.

Amazingly for a flash sale I feel better at the end despite consolidating my number of crash helmets for multi disciplines.

For road racing/sportives I had been wearing a Kask. I got it last summer for my 40th but the fit and straps never felt quite right (and I was always tinkering). Maybe my head shape just wasn't right because the guy who bought it off me loves it and felt he got a bargain  :cool

In time trials I had a Giro Air Attack shield in red and black to replicate my team colours. I have never got on with this helmet. Even though its the right size and fit, I always felt conscious of having a pimple of top of my skull when wearing it. I didn't feel right and as such never warmed to it.

A triathlete bought this off me as it was much lighter than their current helmet set up.

The replacement is a Lazer Blade helmet with Andrei Griepel style clip on Aero shield.

This way I can expose the vents for road riding and clip the shield on for riding against the watch.

So far the switch seems to have worked well and even though I am still tinkering with the Lazer to get the fit perfect I already feel much more comfortable and happy with it.

Anyone else use a Lazer lid?

I considered getting a Omega Pharma-Lotto team-edition one in 2012 to replace the one I crashed. It was a great helmet, and well-fitting; but in the end I went for a cheaper Specialized model - don't remember the exact cost of the OPL one, but it was quite a lot.

You know, thinking about it, that may have been a LAS and not a Lazer. Confusingly similar helmet brand names ... :angry

I use a Lazer. It is a 2012 Lotto special edition (just the colours) Helium, the "climber's option". Super light and big vents, the latter reason being by far the most important element to me.

You can easily fine-tune the fit when the lid is already on your head using the dial provided and the straps are terrific.

Can't comment on other models but this one is (still) a beauty and I would definitely buy Lazer again. Serious brand, well-designed, safe.

    Really love this lid.

So much better than the Kask I had before. Similar cost but the difference in comfort and performance is massive.

The clip on aeroshield is really impressive as well.

    So far so good.

I'm using the Speci Evade, very very good helmet IMO, you don't even know you're wearing it..
For the next season we'll be using the Selev Matrix: http://www.selev.it/en/matrix/354-mat302.html
It's not really beautiful, but let's just hope it fits well.. Anyone on here with experience with Selev?

Me neither, Michiel, but I second the ugly thing. One team - Androni, I think - wore Selev helmets and I thought they were hideous. Guess it doesn't matter as long as they meet the standards and stay cool.

Yeah, they don't look the best.

Might be different when you see it on.
