The diabetics! Team Novo Nordisk
« on: September 09, 2015, 14:52 »
In the absence of To start a Novo Nordisk thread, here is a link to a Guardian piece on them that came out today.

http://www.theguardian.com/sport/100-tours-100-tales/2015/sep/09/team-novo-nordisk-cyclists-living-thriving-diabetes

The author, Suze Clemitson, is perhaps better known to some around these parts as @festinagirl on Twitter.

The latter article has been translated to English for CyclingQuotes:
Novo Nordisk CEO explains Tour de France goal

We discussed it a bit in the general news thread.

#novonordisk to the Tour in 2021?

I quite like the idea of it. Who knows what cycling reforms (if any) will have gone through by then, but why not a one-off chance for the team. They always bring publicity and even if they did nothing in terms of results in the race, they would be far from the first wildcard team to have done that (CCC at the Giro springs to mind for a recent example).

Maybe Ambrose or Valognes might even be able to get a result by then.

yep, I agree, they could be able to be a bit more competitive until then, there must be some good talents with type 1 diabetes out there. If it turns out to be a realistic goal it would surely be a great motivation for them.

What odds though on them racing the Giro before that? They seem to have a good relationship with RCS already.

This year they have raced the Dubai Tour, Strade Bianche and Milan Sanremo. Whilst they're on the start list for both Giro del Piemonte and Milano-Torino in October. Maybe an invite to the premier Abu Dhabi Tour will on it's way also.

So I'll stick my neck out and say Giro in 2020, Tour in 2021.

    http://cyclingtips.com.au/2015/11/in-a-week-where-team-novo-nordisk-meets-the-pope-and-aso-long-term-tour-de-france-focus-continues/

Some more flesh on the bones to that story.

    Quote
“You know how it is with ASO – if you don’t perform, you don’t get invitations.”

It means the project needs to be a long-term one. Riding the Tour is not something that will happen this year or next.

"They want to see us perform better in some of their stage races, in places like the Tour of Yorkshire, the Arctic Race and others."

“Next year we would like to probably target a minimum of two, possibly three WorldTour races".

“Our target and our long term plan is to do the Giro or Vuelta by 2018”

As they say in the article, there has been improvement in the team's performances over the three years in it's current form. Looking at it from a CQ point of view, the three highest scoring riders from the team over those years scored:

    2013: 39, 13, 12
    2014: 63, 30, 15
    2015: 173, 80, 42

With it being such a long term thing, they will have to look to their devo team. Despite what Fus says, they have had a smidgen of success.

Do you know how many people won a stage at junior level and then never achieved anything at U23 or elite level? The list is never-ending.

The inspiration for my (now former) nickname, Lukáš Fus, is one example:
Bronze medal in the 2003 junior Worlds, 2nd on a stage of the Vuelta a Navarra in his first U23 year, then ... nothing. Retired from cycling after the 2006 season.

However, there can be many reasons for talent not to get through - one of those is the lack of proper support. #novonordisk have the financial resources to support as many diabetic cyclists as they want to, for some of them to eventually become competitive at the highest level.
But that will take time, and lots of it.

In a way, this is the #mtn project all over again (only with diabetics instead of Africans). And, in their defense, the #novonordisk people 'stay true' to their project.
For now - it remains to be seen if they'll hire non-diabetics by 2020 if they're almost competitive enough, but need just one or two stars to lead a Tour squad.

    Cadel Evans will be tough.

They've all been at the team training camp in Spain the past week or so, and they're only now just starting on the way over to Australia. I think Nippo - Vini Fantini and UHC will be the only other squads going in cold, so they'll be up against lots of people who have had racing time already at the TDU, NZCC and Nats.

Herald Sun Tour might be a more reasonable target for some relative success.

Well despite all of the negatives going into the race (jet lag and flu), Ambrose ended up doing not badly at all (finished in the group at 6m09 along with Cunego).

The only other finisher was Kamstra who Southerland rates quite highly. You can read a bit more about him here, but he's one of these guys coming from another sport - in this case cross country running. He only really started riding in mid/late 2014 and had his first race under a year ago, so he's showing encouraging signs.

More from them to come in the Herald Sun Tour hopefully.

Nothing to write home about really from the race. Solid performance from Kamstra - outperforming Ambrose in most of the decisive stages. Maybe they can push each other to achieve better results through the season as they'll probably be racing together a lot. Next stop for them is the Philippines.

Don't think they'll go for the Tour immediately - too much competition with a German start and it being the biggest GT: #direct #cofidis #fortuneo #delko #bora #stolting #ccc will be ahead in the pecking order.

Could be the Giro - they've been at Milano-San Remo for a couple of years - but the best chances will be at the Vuelta. Especially as that's essentially an ASO race, and e.g. used as a 'trial run' for #mtn before they got their Tour wildcard.

The 100 years of insulin seems an idee fixe with them, so I don't think they'll even apply for the Tour before then (unless it really does go HC and there are a lot of open slots for PCT teams).

#novonordisk make their Portuguese debut now.

    https://twitter.com/teamnovonordisk/status/698511208161415168

    Stephen Clancy (IRL)
    Corentin Cherhal (FRA)

    Javier Megias (ESP)
    Andrea Peron (ITA)
    Charles Planet (FRA)
    Martijn Verschoor (NED)

Despite this being a 2.1 race and the presence of six CT teams, the field is very strong in both the sprint and climbing dept. Difficult to see them getting many results apart from some break action, however Lozano had a decent performance in Laigueglia on Sunday and Verschoor with a bit more luck might have had a few top-tens in Dubai.

They're also returning to the Philippines tomorrow, the scene of last year's triumph.

CyclingIQ has a good preview of the race.

    DIFFICULTY

It’s disappointing to see no climbs over 1,000 metres in elevation, such as the Baguio stage that has featured in previous years. No individual stage threatens to be decisive, though all present some promising aspects that could open up the race – with the right wind conditions, a strong and co-operative breakaway might leverage the length and back-half profile of the 204km second stage to fracture the peloton and put time into sprinters.

Fingers crossed for Brian and Scott.  :cool

It may not have featured big climbs, but it was a very tough race.

Stage two (which turned out to be the decisive stage for the GC) was a bit of a beast. Kamstra had respiratory problems and had to DNF and along with that De Keijzer crashed out.

    https://twitter.com/c1williamsau/status/700584461184815104

This from a guy who raced MSR, Tro Bro Leon and Strade Bianche last year. However that didn't stop him from going out into the break the next day ( :o) and getting a very credible fifth place.

The final stage also produced a fifth place for Glasspool (his best finish ever).

    http://www.teamnovonordisk.com/tour-de-filipinas-4/

    Quote
The final stage saw Ambrose make the race’s main breakaway but a puncture forced him back to the peloton. The three riders regrouped and refocused efforts on setting up Glasspool for the finish. In the final two kilometers, Glasspool bridged up to the three remaining breakaway riders. With the peloton bearing down and the finish line 500 meters away, Glasspool opened up his sprint. In the end, Timothy Guy (Attaque Team Gusto) took the win.

“I had to go early in the finish so that we didn’t get caught. With a chance for the podium so close, it is a little bittersweet but I am very happy with my career best result,” Glasspool said. “The work from the team over the past three stages has been very selfless and the results from the past two days has started to show our real potential.”

Next up is GP Lugano where Megias is looking to improve on his seventh place from last year. He was 21st on Malhao, so starting to get into some shape.

Devo team are kicking off their campaign too. Trofej Umag is on the 2nd and it would make sense if they were riding the other two races too.

    Trofej Umag

Probable sprint, but a "notorious race due to a number of cyclists drops very afraid" - at least that's what Adria Mobil say. Last year the devo team raced this trio of races as well, but the results weren't anything to write home about. Let's see what difference a year makes.

Calabria back with the team after a sojourn with Champion System. Presumably in a mentor role as he's getting on a bit now.
