....and he did make a big improvement.

Last year in this race he was the team's best finisher in 141st and over the course of the year he didn't break into the top-100 in any UCI race that he entered, so maybe he's starting to find his feet at this level.

Porec up next on Sunday which looks like a similar profile. Another top-twenty would be very good.

The team have finally got round to updating their various rosters on the website. No Eldridge any more for the Devo team, so that fits in with Calabria rejoining in a mentor role. A few new Aussies/Canadians/Americans and Mr. Brand himself have joined the lower ranks.

SB tomorrow for the main team and Porec for the youngsters (round two of Stolting vs Cycling Academy vs TNN Devo).

Valognes couldn't repeat his top-twenty result in the rest of the racing days in Croatia, but there were still promising signs.

In tough windy conditions at Porec he still finished in the main group at 2m05. While in the Istrian Spring Trophy he had a credible 75th in the prologue (at 9s) and broke into the top-100 on the second climbing day (last year for example he was 177th out of 187 finishers on the same stage). The only bad day was the "sprint" stage where he ended up over 6 minutes down, having only one team mate left probably didn't help though.

MSR is up next for the main team. Pologne is probably a bigger target for the team this year, but they'll want to improve on last year's result.

Ambrose has tweeted he want be taking part (knee trouble), but another one of those riders well also miss out.

Unsurprisingly it's Kamstra who misses out.

    http://velomotion.today/break-away-milano-san-remo/

“The break away is our number one goal” according to Henttala, but I'd love to see Megias in the main group at the bottom of the Poggio.

As for MSR, I guess it was an improvement over 2015, but I'm sure they were after more.

They got in the break again, Lozano finished 94th (3m17) in comparison to 99th (4m59) for Megias last year and they had two extra finishers (but conditions probably had more to do with that than anything).

Following a successful visa interview on Friday, and pending my passport return, I will be flying out to the USA on Thursday to start my fantastic new adventure. A huge thank you to everyone for your support. I hope I can make you all proud.

Getting my salt on! Yesterday's stage (two) has to be the hardest thing I've ever done as a sportsman. This is a steep learning curve, it's not easy or ever going to be easy but it's the beginning of an adventure and I absolutely loved it. Survived through 177km finishing just behind the main group. On to today's stage!

Calabria was the best placed rider for the team in 26th.

The devo team are over in the Ukraine currently. Not much to report result wise, Calabria was their best finisher in the one day races, but some stuff off the bike.

The second of the one day trio of races was cancelled....

It's here, the big one for the team.

    https://twitter.com/teamnovonordisk/status/750717638838521857

    Williams
    Planet
    Clancy
    Megias
    Lozano
    Verschoor
    Peron
    Lefrancois

Beating Roth's performances at Romandie (11th on a stage) and Suisse (one stage top ten and a day in the KoM jersey) should be an attainable (I hope) minimum target.

Although I've still been keeping an eye on the team, I just haven't had the time to keep up to date with the thread. Bike Geeeeks takes prioroty.

    https://twitter.com/teamnovonordisk/status/795728516667080704

Some musings from Southerland and I think he's generally right. It hasn't been a step up from their performances in 2015. Megias is still the only one they can really rely on for "big" results - 14th at California, 2nd in Korea and 8th at the Japan Cup. Of the others Verschoor did have his 5th on a sprint stage at California and Lozano did well again in the Italian Autumn races, but no big jumps from the other riders.

Injuries surely have played a bit of a part in that. Ambrose, part of my CQ team so I keep an extra special watch on him, had knee problems for most of the year and in effect left the team, but hopefully he can put those behind him and re-join in 2017.

However other teams suffer from injuries too, so you can't use that as too much of an excuse.

For now, though, the American’s main focus is on getting Novo Nordisk to the 2021 Tour de France to coincide with the 100th anniversary of the invention of insulin. But he insists his team will not take short cuts to get there. “The only thing we really need is time,” he says. “It takes time to develop athletes. It takes time to develop champions. We are not going to risk breaking them. But at the same time nothing is going to break us.”

It can't be cheap to run the whole thing.

    http://www.teamnovonordisk.com/team/

So you have the pro team, the devo team, juniors and then various men and women who do MTB/Track/CX/Tri/Running that they support. You've got the sponsorship of big races to get those invites. Talent camps to identify youngsters. It must all add up.

The company has a new CEO, so maybe this change is coming from him. Hopefully though it's just a kick up the pants and not something that is a presage of the team's disappearance.

I don't think having a new CEO necessarily has to mean pulling out of the team. He's been at the company for 25 years before taking over at the helm.

That said, he's an economist, and if he decides that the sponsorship isn't good economy, it could still mean the end of the sponsorship.
The team sponsor's target group is quite restricted, after all: Only diabetics take anti-diabetics medication, and Novo Nordisk is already a big player in anti-diabetics medication, with a ~30% market share (source).

Exactly how is the cycling sponsorship going to expand the market? Yes, you could try to turn customers[1] away from the products of Sanofi, Merck, Eli Lilly, Novartis, or Astra Zeneca ... But for that, you need visibility at the highest level.
The random diabetic non-cycling fan has never heard of the Tour of Korea, Japan Cup, Tour de Filipinas, or Volta do Rio Grande do Sul - the Tour de France is what they know, if that.

But to get into the Tour de France you need better results, and to get better results you need stronger riders, and those stronger riders just haven't come about so far. Even if Megias, Henttala, Lozano, Peron, Poli, Verschoor & Valognes step up their game this year, that's probably still not enough.
Eventually, I believe they may have to take in a few - just a few - non-diabetics to bolster their squad to get into the Tour. They did that when still sponsored by Sanofi (until 2012), and it brought the team quite some success. I imagine that the "diabetics only" policy was a requirement from Novo Nordisk - but it's holding the team back.
#mtn15 brought in EBH, Cummings, Pauwels, Farrar etc., and it took them first to the Tour, and then to WT status (albeit with a new sponsor). The same could be a way for #novonordisk to get the team's progress[2] going again.
     1. and by customers, I mean both patients, and the doctors prescribing the medication
     2. and there has been progress in the last four years, if you look closely; in 2013 only Megias was remotely competitive, now they have half a dozen decent riders

Is that true though for the Average Joe in Korea/Japan/Philippines/Brazil etc? Are they not more likely in those cases to see a bit on the local news about the local race. The company has global offices everywhere (http://www.novonordisk.com/about-novo-nordisk/worldmap.html) and I think it's an important part of the job for the riders to do the local promotion. Going round schools or whatever that entails.

    Anyway I'm just rambling.

Are there any other alternatives to  getting in a few non-diabetics in the team?

    • "Sponsoring" Androni instead and getting at least Megias a ride in the Giro

    • Replace the PCT and devo team with just a CT team. Basically an U23 team with a couple of older heads, and if anyone is good enough there would always be the scope to continue to offer personal sponsorship/medical help when they leave to a bigger team.

    No, you're right about that.

It is. But while a podium in Korea or wherever might make some local headlines, it's inconsequential in the grand scheme of things. This is a company with over 10 billion € yearly revenue - they think big.

I don't think either of those avenues is workable. Getting one diabetic into one GT isn't the goal - it's to get a whole team of diabetics into the Tour.
A development team at CT level could be the last option for Southerland & co. if Novo Nordisk dial down the sponsorship ... but I don't think anyone would voluntarily go down that road.

Of course, if this turns out someday to be the industry standard integrated handlebar-computer-braking solution then I'll eat my kevlar-reinforced aerodynamic hat.
