I can see his point, but tbh what is he expecting with this kind of team, 14 Belgian (more or less) classics riders, Yannick Ejssen and Rob Ruijgh. With no results at all, and a pure cobbled specialist as the DS. Maybe there are a handful of races in France they could do well in, but that's about it.

And in regards to Sunday, I was surprised to see Southeast so present for example, with one rider in the break all day and even a late solo attack, so this generalization of "ProContinental teams turning up here without any motivation" is just wrong. Sure, Fortuneo had just one finisher, Bora's strong guys abandoned early, but you always have some teams doing better one day, and worse the other.

Have to say, I didn't see the race, so I can't comment directly. I agree with you though, his comments seem a bit ill-judged, which is more or less why I posted them, because they're unusually direct. :P

it doesn't even make much of a difference if you have seen the race or not, David Boucher was in the early breakaway, and that was about what I can remember to have seen from Crelan. So it's not like they set the race on fire or something - in contrary, if you take into account that the team consisted of 5 former World Tour riders, their showing may have even been below expectations.

Some of us may have noticed that Wednesday's Le Samyn was billed as the first round of the so-called "Napoleon Games Cycling Cup", a new multi-round competition aimed at supporting and promoting Belgium's venerable but vulnerable UCI 1:1 races as well as providing further incentives for the nation's CT teams.

The Cup is the brainchild of former Cofidis, QuickStep and Garmin pro Nick Nuyens and its global sponsorship agreement, which spreads sponsors' exposure and the earnings from it across the whole of the country rather than regionally as before, is unique to the sport in Belgium.

The full list of races is thus:

    1/ GP Samyn: 2/03
    2/ Handzame Classic: 18/03
    3/ Heiste Pijl: 4/6
    4/ Halle-Ingooigem: 22/6
7/ Dwars door Hageland: 5/8 (experimental evening finish set for 18:45!)
    5/ GP Leuven: 21/8
    6/ Koolskamp - Kampioenschap van Vlaanderen: 16/9
    8/ Binche-Chimay-Binche: 4/10
    9/ Eurométropole: 2/10
    10/ Putte-Kapellen – Sluitingsprijs: 11/10

I have transformed the le Samyn thread to one for the Cycling Cup (as most of those other 1.1 races won't get an own thread anyway), so we can continue the (potential) discussion over there:

Bernard Hinault will retire from his role with ASO at the end of 2016.

The five-time Tour winner says he wants to spend more time with his family. That's usually a euphemism for jumping off the podium before being pushed, something which Hinault knows all about ...

Quintana wins a fiery shootout at Catalunya, with Contador 2nd. Rolland takes the Crit Int'l. Thomas, Contador, Porte 1-2-3 in Paris-Nice.  Should be a very interesting GT season.

I think you misspelled Pinot there ;), Rolland was dropped quite early, as a matter of fact 2 or 3 of his team mates was left after him.

I have taken a renewed interest in the trajectory this season of Rémy Di Grégorio. Let me tell you why:

The massive-headed Frenchman had somewhat escaped my notice lately until last week's Flèche Wallonne, when the commentators on RTBF unfairly (and inaccurately) questioned his presence when ASO had expressly denied CCC because of Rebellin.

But that is for the Dark Side. What piqued my interest instead was that, on perusal of his recent results, he seems to be targeting the #kom in stage races.

So far, he has succeeded in this twice in 2016, taking the jersey in La Provence and Critérium International. He currently leads the competition in the Tour of Turkey.

He did have an expressly interim post as General Manager but apart from that, we don't know who decided he would leave. Certainly #didata has brought on solid sporting managers but who knows what goes on behind the scenes.

He had an interim post, yes - but that was only in late 2014. For 2015 they put out a job ad for the GM job, and Smithy got it.

Leaving now, in the middle of the season, is weird.
