Men's Transfers 16-17
« on: October 22, 2015, 10:54 »
So we start next years thread early as well and it is a big one Gilbert #bmc ----> #lotto

Quote
After three years of his career at Loto (from 2009-2011), the return of Philippe Gilbert in the Belgian workforce is mentioned for 2017. Indeed, our confreres of Het Nieuwsblad asked Marc Sergeant on the possible return to the fold of his former leader for the 2017 season, as the former world champion comes out of contract with BMC Racing. "Nothing is impossible, said the manager of Soudal Lotto. Philippe (Gilbert) always said he wanted to finish his career with the team where he obtained the most success. "
With Omega Pharma-Lotto team name at the time, Gilbert was notably achieved an incredible triple Amstel Gold Race / Flèche Wallonne / Liège-Bastogne-Liège in 2011 for its last season, winning that year the Clasica San Sebastian The Grand Prix of Quebec and even the first stage of the Tour de France to Mont des Alouettes.
Philippe Gilbert would also exchanged on the subject with Marc Sergeant at the World last Richmond. However, a major problem arises, it is the salary of the rider who currently stands at € 3 million per year, which could be an obstacle in the negotiations. Sergent will have to convince the 33 runner to run for a smaller salary..

Of course, if this turns out someday to be the industry standard integrated handlebar-computer-braking solution then I'll eat my kevlar-reinforced aerodynamic hat.

Partly I was surprised that neither the article or you had mentioned him. Is he yesterday's man already?

And partly because in the 12.3 seconds I spent thinking about it, I couldn't think where he might beneficially go. Maybe Sky if GT is going for GTs.

Not sure he'll go to Sky, they have good youngsters like Rowe, DvP and Moscon.

Not really the right place, but hope he is going to be right on form after Easter, and able to battle with Canc & GVA when it counts.  No-one wants to see this again!

    My predictions:

Have to agree with most of this, think a lot of the big names there are pretty well settled.

No chance that Lampre could afford Nibali? Though there had been some rumours over that....

Would be interesting as Merida is the parent company of Specialized, so sponsor-wise there's no problem.

If Galbusera splashes the cash, it's possible. At the current budget, I don't see it happening.

Two things, I believe Costa is on his last year of a rather large deal, secondly it seems to me that they under spend a bit last year to be able to be in it for the Nibali sweepstakes, I think it will absolutely happen and will be a great deal for the team.

Costa or Nibali easy choice really, you do it in a heart beat.

As far as where Costa should go, it all depends on what he wants. It seems clear to me that Costa will most likely never win a GT, the climbs just get too long it seems. In that regard I think Costa has two options, either he continues to chase GT success and sign somewhere where he will be given a chance to lead or he picks option B and takes the money to ride for a big team while still being the leader for select week longs, Sky with leadership in Suisse type deal. I could see a team like IAM wanting to give him a deal, give them a bit of TdF relevancy and a favorite for Suisse, I like that one.

I think he is one of those guys where BMC has to say, we like him, but unless we can get him a a bargain rather have the money until we are sure we can't get any big names.

BMC could maybe both lock up GVA and make some sort of big signing with what today is Phil's money, keeping space is key imo.

You are probably right, was more a statement of what I thought was the way to maximize talent on the roster, it doesn't mean they will do it, or that I think they will do it.

This. BMC has waited ages to get the sorts of results it is finally getting and I reckon much of that has to do with core stability rather than buying in more and more big stars like they were doing back in 2011 and 2012 (Hushovd, Gilbert, ...)

Stability might be the new norm. Teams like Lotto-Soudal and AG2R also endured a few lean years while their youngsters were coming through. I actually think the sponsors like it that way.

So back to BMC. Youngsters like Dilier and Vliegen will be given space to step up into the middle ground while GVA and TVG captain the ship. Meanwhile Nathan Van Hooydonck is a cert from Devo in 2017.

#fantini Damiano Cunego will stay with the team for another three years and become a manager afterwards :)

(I can only read the headline in today's Gazzetta, but I think that's what it says, "Cunego firma altri 3 anni alle Nippo sarà manager.")

Costa lives/trains in Switzerland as far as I know... or at least, he used to. Tour de Suisse was almost a home race for him, so I could see IAM going for him.

He might get a decent NC kit from them, as well...

Two more years as rider apparently (2017 & 2018) and one year as DS/manager (2019).
