Even if they can sign a big rider to replace Degenkolb it won't be a German. How will the German sponsors respond to that? I'm not sure Dumoulin - awesome though his hair is - sells a lot of shampoo in Germany.
I don't think they'll be pleased if their biggest *de names left are Simon Geschke (though he could head a new beard shampoo line), Johannes Fröhlinger and Nikias Arndt.

Actually I think Trek would be great for Alberto.   A new team that can be shaped around him ... that he can pick and choose for himself.

Having worked with Sagan I am sure that him and Degenkolb can work together if that is where they go too.  Degenkolb is a true classics man so wont interfere much with what Berto wants.

the other interesting one is Michael Matthews.   Major talk that he will not re-up with OGE ... who are backing Gerrans.   He hasnt re signed yet and is apparantly in talks with Giant Alpecin

Stupid move by OGE.   Gerrans is old, Matthews is their future.

Yes, that would be putting the eggs massively in the wrong basket. Matthews is a winner, has been in GT leader's jerseys, can win several classics ...
Gerrans already has won a Monument or two, but he's old and not a team player.

Maybe it's simply name recognition in Australia? Gerrans does the TDU as a favourite to win every year, Matthews is never seen there. Wouldn't be the first time a team makes a decision based solely on its home market.

well, currently Greenedge has no sponsor for 2018 anyway, and I guess Matthews is not looking for a one year deal.

And apparently there have been personal problems in the past, or in other words, Matthews doesn't really fit into the culture of the team (or any "team" at all).

    sponsorship isnt reallyt he problem.

Orica has only just signed up again for 2017 - I am not sure that its only a 1 yr deal though, I thought it was longer -  but even if its not, with Gerry Ryan always in the background, he will support them until a new sponsor is found.

The issue I think is where the team wants to go.  If they are going more along the Chavez-Yates-GC kind of direction, they may not want to spend the amount of money that Bling wants ...    which I think would be a mistake for them

I think they need to suck it up and offer him enough to get him to stay.  Work with him to get him to play the team game - and give Gerro a kick up the backside and make him play the team captain role that he should be playing at this point in his career.

It is only for 2017, they'll stop after that.
But 1.5 years is a lot of time to find a new sponsor in. And like you say, Gerry Ryan won't let his 'baby' down if they don't find a replacement in time.

Gerrans is old anyway, he will stay with the team until the end of his career, his price will be fairly low given his palmares (Matthews will ask for way more), and he has turned into quite a good teamplayer over the past 1 to 2 years, from my point of view. I don't think it's Gerrans vs Matthews.

And if kicking out Matthews would give me the opportunity to continue to develop guys like Chaves, Yates, Ewan, Cort and so on, I would do so immediately as well.

It was at 15:30. Nothing really newsworthy, they presented their special Tour kit and the 9 riders that will take to the start:

    https://twitter.com/BoraArgon18/status/744930412258955264

    http://www.bora-argon18.com/en/news/argonnews201606pk-dus/argonnews201606pk-dus/1344798
Also announced they'll apply to be a WorldTour team for 2017 - shocking news. :lol
It was more in what isn't said:
Quote from: Ralph Denk, team manager
Our loyal partner BORA will remain our first title sponsor. For the moment we cannot say anything about new sponsors. But with the budgets that are at our disposal for 2017 we will be able to significantly strengthen our squad. We aim to play an important role at the WorldTour races on the one hand, on the other we still want to support young, especially German talents and guide them to the top level of cycling.
No mention of Argon 18, sounds like they are on the way out. Which lends more credence to the Specialized (and Sagan) rumours - but this is something they obviously can't announce yet.

Poor Dominik Nerz. The end of his career as the next German GC prospect not even "really noteworthy"!

Just a year and a half ago Bora were pushing him as a replacement for Konig. Since then... tumbleweed. And now he doesn't even make the Tour squad he was signed to lead.

    I'll admit something:
When I saw a rider in the #ag2r kit lining up at the U23 champs yesterday, I thought "hang on, Nerz isn't U23 anymore!" It was a rider from Chambéry Cyclisme, their farm team - but it says a lot that I wasn't even aware Nerz hasn't been at #ag2r for 18 months by now. :o

I'm beginning to suspect that Bora have buried him in a shallow grave somewhere and are pretending that he never existed. The only evidence to the contrary is that he allegedly finished seventh in the Criterium International.

It's going to be an interesting season for German speaking riders. IAM making a load of them unemployed but Bora stepping up to World Tour and Giant probably looking to bulk up their own local contingent.

Last year during TdF Norwegian TV2 had Nerz as a profiled rider, more or less daily they interviewed him - he got more TV time than Kittel :) and by the way I am still wondering if they even sell Bora here #lostchances

I am not dense, and I am not stupid. But what the hell Scott O'Raw is trying to say here

    https://twitter.com/velocast/status/743813709613633536

is completely opaque to me. Lukas? You took part in this convo and apparently understand WTF he is babbling about. PLEASE enlighten me! I mean, really, you can read something into the fact that Dirk Demol FOLLOWED somebody on Twitter? WTF??? Demol IS still human, and presumably still does social human things, right? But that just brings me back to WTF???????

ATM, I can't see any confirmation. I barely even see a clue. What I see is the barest hint of a possibility of a clue. Phuh. Enlighten me, please.
Twitter has many levels (as do other social media). And interactions between cycling insiders have often proven to be very good indicators of things that eventually came to be true. One example is the CULT-Stölting merger that we broke on Feltet.dk (article in *dk), on the morning of their press conference in August last year.
Nobody had said directly that it was true, neither on nor off the record - but it looked incredibly likely, like a puzzle coming together, and turned out to be true.

Dirk Demol is human and does social human things, yes. But his Twitter timeline consists mostly of retweets from other accounts and the occasional tweet about a race he (probably) DSed himself. In other words, he's not the most prolific guy on there.

Of course, a #trek DS following two riders that are rumoured to be in talks with that team for 2017 isn't hard proof of anything. But it's another piece of a puzzle that is coming together more and more.
