Team Sponsorship 16/17
« on: November 03, 2015, 11:12 »
Starting early, but with Team Hushovd building in Norway and other news gradually coming out, not too early.

First news:
Rapha and Team Sky have decided not to renew our Partnership beyond the current four-year deal, which concludes at the end of the 2016 season.

This is very interesting news coming out of Portugal this morning.

News from Sporting: the Club reactivates cycling and will have a team next season.

The team will have Jorge Mendes as co-ordinator and Nuno Ribeiro - former winner of the Volta a Portugal - in command of the technical side.

According to the news from the club, the team already has an agreement for 3 years with the winning team of the Volta, Team W52-Quinta da Lixa.

As much as I have to hate Sporting for family reasons, it will be great to see the green and white hoops back in cycling. And if they are taking over W52, then we might see them winning again soon.

I'm a little delayed with this update... mainly because it confused me at the time and continues to do so. I was hoping for a clearer picture by now, but here is what I know.

On December 3rd, Sporting Clube de Portugal - one of the historic big three sports clubs in Portugal[1] - announced that they had agreed a partnership with W52-Quinta da Lixa-Jetclass who, led by eventual winner, Spaniard Gustavo Cesar Veloso, had dominated this year's Volta a Portugal[2]. By all accounts, this would have seen Sporting - the team of Portuguese greats such as José Maria Nicolau and Joaquim Agostinho - return to cycling for the first time since 1987[3].

December 6th - This post appears on the W52 team Facebook page. It will not be sporting, but FC Porto whose name will return to the roads in 2016. A five year contract has been signed with the cycling club (UC Sobrado), W52, FC Porto and Porto Canal, the club's official TV station.

On the same day, no doubt feeling stung by being outdone by their northern neighbours[4], Sporting issued a statement that they were still looking to establish sponsorship with one of "four teams" who ride in the Tour of Portugal, and that they broke the contract with W52 because of "anti-doping" concerns.

    Quote
"The club is aware of several facts and circumstances leading to and raise the largest and most sustained doubts about procedures related to analysis and doping control by the project promoters."

A situation confirmed to TSF by Vicente Moura:. "Sportinguistas, some with a very deep knowledge of the sport, began to tell me to be careful, that there is here problems (with the W52 team) and there have been problems in the past had to do with doping control or the like, because Nuno Ribeiro (sports director of W52) had problems in the past."
    [5]

So far there has been no indication that Sporting have found another club to sponsor... given the proximity of Sobrado to Oporto, their partnership makes more sense in any case. Although, admittedly, the clubs that are currently on the road are either in the north or the Algarve.

Let's see what - if anything - changes in the coming months. Portuguese cycling has not been known for its stability in recent years, so expect a few changes to names etc. before the season kicks off.
     1. I say sports clubs because, although Sporting, Porto, Benfica and others are mainly known for their football, unlike in the UK and other countries, these clubs are active in a number of other sports. Notably, Boavista are the only multi-sport club who have retained a presence in the Portuguese peloton, being known as Radio Popular-Onda in recent years.
     2. Your explanations for which on a postcard to Avenida do Lado Escuro 1, Sobrado, Portugal - bonus points if you can work out my translation
     3. As far as I can work out...
     4. Not for the first time, as Porto and Benfica fans alike will gleefully tell you
     5. Google translate from this article, not my own (on this occasion)

Breaking news from Portugal... Sporting have agreed some sort of deal with the Tavira team (previously known as Carmim-Prio and BancoBIC). Thus, 2 out of Portugal's 3 big teams will be on the road in 2016.

More news as I find and/or translate it.

THIS is the news I have been waiting for. I'm really quite excited right now...

From Portuguese sports paper, a bola, comes this report (translated by me).

    Quote
Benfica expected to return to the road in 2017

Benfica are attentive to the movements of their rivals FC Porto and Sporting in cycling, and are also predicting a return to the road.

"The management has already decided that we will return to the roads in 2017 and be strongly represented abroad, particularly in France and Luxembourg. The contacts are progressing in this direction. We will have two teams. One for the training and development of the under-23s and the other professional", revealed, to A BOLA, Domingos Almeida Lima, vice-president responsible for this branch of the modalities.

While Porto and Sporting have simply attached their names to existing clubs (Porto to CC Sobrado, previously W52-Quinta da Lixa, and Sporting to CC Tavira), this reads, to me, as if Benfica will launch a new team - or, rather, re-launch their team from 2008.

    So you're a Benfica fan, I gather? ;)

Yes, it would be great if they come back - think of the boost it would give *pt cycling to have the Big Three from football fighting it out on the roads as well!
Could breath some fresh life into the Volta too, that race deserves HC status and a combination of great Portuguese teams and strong international competition.

More than that - which is all true - is that it could provide a really good intermediate step between the domestic/continental scene and the few Portuguese riders who make it to WT level. If they go for PCT status, for example, and ride HC and .1 races in France and Luxembourg (lots of Portuguese ex-pats in those countries, of course), it would develop riders far better than the same dozen or so routes in Portugal itself.

Canyon were so kind to answer

their deal with Movistar and Katusha is for 2016.
    this doesn't say much
but if it was longer why not saying it?  :P

    https://wwwtwitter.com/canyon_bikes/status/702479815291617280

I must admint one of the most interesting things (for me) in pro cycling is who is riding what, every year

Specialized or Cervelo rumoured to be chosen for Bahrein-Rijs team

Scott deal with GreenEdge is multi-year....

IAM Cycling (with Scott too) no news if the team continues in 2017

Pinarello deal with SKY ends this year

Alberto's new team still up in the air (and Specialized is already splashing much cash with the other teams)

I seem to remember Cervelo deal with DiData is for 2016

after I guess 15 years with Ridley, Telenet Fidea will ride TREK bikes (and have Bontrager as sponsor)

I think Ridley will stay in the game though, probably backing another team. The CX range is very popular and the company needs to maintain the core brand profile.

The Movistar logo (and name) had been dropped already. Replaced by the main sponsor of Kruger.

Presumably they'll have no problems riding in the Vuelta a Colombia now with Movistar Continental.

Sorry I'd missed the Roompot news, hence the late like on the post.

I am really pleased about this. They are always visible in races and in Weening have properly punched above their weight in stage racing and classics.

I hope they stay in for a while.

Plus I am thinking about booking a holiday and I want to boycott Vacansoleil since they stopped sponsoring a team.

So you are holidaying with Roompot, or you are  rewarding competitors of Vacansoeil for having never put a cent into the sport?

Seems odd to choose to penalise Vacansoleil for having put millions of euros into the sport over 6 years.
