http://www.cyclingnews.com/news/report-bora-argon-18-to-sign-sagan-and-add-hansgrohe-as-naming-rights-sponsor/

Bora rumoured to add Hansgrohe as a co-sponsor and Specialised as bike sponsor. That would give them the budget to sign Sagan and Majka. Interesting, would instantly make them WT worthy, but they'd have to add some cobbles support for Sagan. The poor guy has been short on support for too long now.

Article also says that Specialised would leave Astana. So Argon18 to Astana, or to Bahrein?

And regarding Bahrein, if that is to be serious isn't it about time we heard some announcements?

So how big is this Bikeexchange thing? Could it become the full new sponsor for when Orica quits, or is it not big enough for that?

    no I dont think so.

just reading a bit - actually Gerry Ryan has taken a stake in "marketplacer" - the business which created bike exchange .... its a private company that did a small-ish capital raising

so not going to be a sole sponsor any time soon

and its still being driven very much by Gerry Ryan

Bit of a strange rumour. It makes sense Alpecin don't want to sponsor Giant when their German stars are all moving house, but why then switch to Katusha?

And another rumour is that Canyon will leave Katusha at the end of season. It's definitely an interesting summer sponsorship-wise.

    Why not?
It's a red jersey, they have some German (or German-speaking) riders & staff (Politt, Haller, Schmidt; with Holczer also somewhere behind the scenes), they can broaden their marketing to Norway, Spain, Russia with the #katusha stars ...

Of course Alpecin-Stölting would make far more sense, but who am I telling that. ;)

But are the Katusha stars really that big? Kristoff is a good rider but I'm not convinced he'll return to spring 2015 level. Purito is as good as done, and Zakarin is a career-ending crash - or darkside bust - waiting to happen.

And regarding the German market, Geschke's beard is worth more there than those Katusha riders and staff combined.

Surely there is better value for money out there?

Kristoff, Purito and Zakarin ARE bigger than Ludvigsson, Kragh or Preidler!
Not necessarily bigger than Dumoulin, of course.

The German market is more or less saturated with Alpecin stuff (if not oversaturated). Foreign growth is the next step.
If needs be, they can just make Politt grow a beard. :D

Surely there is better value for money out there?
You would think so. But sponsoring companies' mugwumps aren't required to decide rationally where to put their money. :lol

Signing both Sagan and Majka with that money and then not having enough money left to find support for then would be a concern for me. Sagan is going to need a bit of support for both sprints and classics and Majka will need a some good support for GT GC as well do they have the money to do both. Otherwise signing only Sagan does seem smarter in my eyes.

I hope the new sponsor for Giant is correct. Would be awesome if they get a bigger budget, still my favourite team around. Just please do something about those jerseys...

Yep agreed. Well, not that Majka needs support (he just needs ample supply of glue and a competitor's backwheel to attach it to), but Sagan certainly does. Not sure how big their budget is going to be and how much Specialised is going to contribute, but Sagan needs a big wage and a lot of supporters.

And there is the problem that they need to be competitive even in races where Sagan is not present. They'll have to sign a few more riders if they want to line up a competitive classics squad and 3 GT squads.

    Denk talked of 12 million.
People then assume that Specialized will pay Sagan's ~4 million on top of that ...
But I think they won't go that way.

Tony Martin is the obvious choice for the team (Degenkolb is assumed to have signed elsewhere already), and if there's then also room for Majka, König or someone similar, even better.

Sagan may just end up having to take a substantial cut this transfer season as nobody seems willing to sign him for his current (Oleg-inflated) wages. :o

Sagan may not want to sign for a team that's starting completely from scratch (nevermind that a team with him and Nibali is certain to get into any race they want).
Or he doesn't want to ride on the same team as Nibali, who knows.

Maybe you're right, and *bh will present Nibali, Sagan, Majka and all their entourage on 1st August, with all this talk of Specialized-sponsored teams just a red herring.

Although French publication l’Equipe has reported that BMC will quit its backing of a WorldTour team at the end of 2017, team owner Andy Rihs has told CyclingTips that the squad is a long term project

I suspect the truth falls in between these things. Rihs doesn't want to bankroll the team anymore, that much is clear. But if there are sponsors interested but who aren't the "right fit", and we get to this time next year, maybe the "fit" will change...

Sunweb will be the main sponsor for 3 years, Giant will be secondary sponsor.

Alpecin could either go as third sponsor to Bora or to Katusha. Katusha, it says here, hopes to reach agreement with a new co-sponsor this week.

So where does that leave Movistar? Wouldn't it be pretty unusual to have a bike manufacturer as a title sponsor of a team while still supplying to another team - especially another WT team?
