Astana on Argon 18 bikes for the next 3 years, while Bora switch to Specialized for the same time.

Another of the world's worst kept secrets is out: Merida partners with Bahrain to become co-name sponsor and bike sponsor.

Interview with #gm manager Gabriele Marchesani:
    http://www.cicloweb.it/2016/08/02/gm-europa-ovini-progetto-con-vista-professional/

They're hoping to step up to ProConti:
    Quote from: Google Translate
Yesterday we filed with the UCI the dossier to obtain a professional license. We still want to make a professional "low profile", without flights of fancy: sixteen elements with several young boys who will overlook for the first time in the professional world with a couple of experienced guides. This for the first year, then perhaps with the passage of time we can grow together with sponsors.

at the end of 2013 Champion System team folded because the sponsor decided to put more money in the Lampre deal for 2014

at the end of 2013 Merida came up, showed a bunch of $$$ to LAmpre and they broke their contract with Wilier and got Merida from 2014

in the summer 2016 Merida says bye bye to Lampre, and gets behind Bahrain

    I dont think so.

I was just pointing out how easy it is to be left high and dry by a sponsor.

I rode today with the Footon-Servetto manager here in Asti
he works woth Gianetti, and he says Gianetti is one of Merida´s men in Europe.

Saronni sold the license for a very good price. Lampre will go pro-conti. maybe with Merida bikes (still being discussed)

Saronni still has a contract with Suomi helmets. no news about Bahrain groups helmets and stuff.

The full Sagan wage at Bora will be paid by Specy. Specy drops both Etixx!! and Astana (that´s what he says) no news about the new Etixx bikes.

Also says, we already know, Etixx contracts are valid for 2017. but he says Lefevre is a smart man and is already trying to look for sponsors.

he (the Footon guy) has a bike-shop in Asti, official BMC dealer. BMC dropped the Impec factory in Suisse. it was a bit of an expensive mistake. all models built in Taiwan now.

I had to put him through a lot of questions. he wasnt amused ahah, it´s not the talkative guy. we met 3-4 times in the last 20 years.
he thought for sure: wtf this guy cares about sponsorships! (I dont know anyone I ride with, who´s mad about sponsors and supplier deals as myself. he doesnt know anyone but me either)  :D

You bet he wasn't! But Tony Martin demanded Specialized ITT bikes as far as I remember, said the Merckx ones weren't good enough.

Now that Martin is most likely leaving, Eddy can get back in.

nothing definite but all signs point in the direction east so far. So #katusha it is, probably

In other news, Aquablue has bought the Iam bus and trucks for ~half a million Euro...

    http://www.stickybottle.com/latest-news/irelands-first-pro-team-buys-worldtour-luxury-coach-and-truck/

...so they seem to be pretty serious about the pro-conti project. The article says "the team should be in a position to confirm its first signings soon"

#ringeriks Team Ringeriks-Kraft and the cycling clubs Ringerike CK & Lillehammer CK join forces and will form a development team for young Norwegian riders. The management company will be jointly owned by the two clubs, the jersey will be mostly white, with a blue stripe (for Ringerike CK) on one sleeve and a green stripe (for Lillehammer CK) on the other.
Main sponsor is Norwegian fuel station chain Uno-X.

Coop (the title sponsor of the #coop team that's part-owned by Kristoff) is looking into starting a Norwegian ProConti team from 2018. Kristoff's contract with Katusha is up at the end of 2017, and the team could be built around him, says his coach and stepfather Stein Ørn:
Planlegger norsk profflag til 2018 (in *no)

Regardless of whether the team will include Kristoff himself or start out with smaller riders, I'm looking forward to this. The Tour of Norway, Arctic Race & Tour des Fjords have showed a lot of talent in the local Conti teams: Vangstad, Hoem, Jensen, Halvorsen, C.F. Hagen, Hoelgaard, Lukkedahl, Fløtten ... and the list goes on.

"Have filed for evaluation for 2017 with the UCI" sounds pretty serious. They wouldn't do that if they didn't think they could satisfy the criteria - and I don't remember when the last PCT applicant didn't get awarded a license.

Short notice would be November/December after stringing them along for a bit about possibly continuing. This gives them time to look for other teams, as I guess very few American CT teams (bar Axeon maybe) have many (or any?) of their riders signed up for 2017 yet.

A few could retire - Marcotte, Amaran and maybe Haedo? Murphy back to Lupus? Sanchez to a Colombian team? I would be surprised if Acevedo made the jump back up to PCT or higher, but I guess if some teams are desperate (and some probably are) then he's an option. Somewhere like Inteja might be a more realistic port of call.

Anyway, I wonder if the promotion of California to WT played a part in the decision to quit.

That wouldn't be short notice, that would be borderline criminal.

Making the announcement of the team stopping less than a week before their last race is ... short notice.

Bora vs Bahrain vs Dimension Data for two WT spots.

The way I read this, Dimension Data is pretty much screwed. Their current team has about as many points as Nibali alone has, and riders like Gasparotto bring even more. DD just doesn't have the budget to compete, especially when riders like Swift are according to CN going for wages of 500.000/year. But losing WT status would cause problems with sponsors and the like...

It would be really sad to see a nice, thoroughly decent team like DD lose sponsors because a megalomaniac Arab prince wants his WT status. DD are the kind of team you'd want in a WT: supporting cycling in an underdeveloped area, investing in youth, supporting a worthy charity, with sponsors involved in the sport.

And yet, looking just at sporting value... The DD team is just not good enough for WT status. Although the same could be said for a number of teams that are currently WT.

Probably UCI will chicken out and give 18 teams WT status in the end though, and none of this will be a problem.

One thing I would like to see happen is that no new team could enter the sport at a level higher than Pro Conti. If a Sponsor/megalomaniac arab prince wants to get to WT they would either have to spend a year at a lower level which would show some sort of commitment or sponsor an existing team which would help the existing teams in terms of stability.

Even if they had to come in at Pro Conti Level given the riders they've signed Bahrain Merida would basically be guaranteed an invite to any WT race they want next year.
