THE ROAD TO RIO BEGINS IN BALLARAT

24 Nov 2015 , by Cycling Australia

MARS 2016 Cycling Australia Road National Championships, January 6-10, Ballarat

When the calendar turns to 2016, the Road to Rio for Australia’s road cyclists will begin at the MARS 2016 Cycling Australia Road National Championships from January 6 in Ballarat.

The first Australian Championships of the Olympic year will feature a historic new schedule, headlined by the creation of a ‘Super Sunday’ line up that is set to reach the biggest broadcast audience in the event’s history.

For the first time, the Sunday schedule will showcase both the women’s and men’s road races, with the final hour of the women’s road race to be broadcast throughout Australia on Nine Network and FOXSPORTS Australia immediately prior to the men’s road race.

“Cycling Australia is pleased that - through our broadcast partners - we will be bringing more of this fantastic event and highlighting the amazing feats of our female athletes more than ever before,” said Cycling Australia CEO Nicholas Green OAM.

“By showcasing a section of the women’s road race on ‘Super Sunday’, it further extends Cycling Australia’s commitment to women’s cycling which in 2016 will include elevating the status of the under 23 women’s classification by presenting the famous green and gold nationals jersey to the winner.

“And with Rio just around the corner, we expect the cream of the crop of our Olympic and World Championships stars to battle for the crown.

“So whether you are watching at home in your living rooms or you’re one of the tens of thousands who will line the Mt Buninyong course, you are set for a mouth-watering feast.”

Cycling Australia is excited that MARS has reconfirmed as the major event sponsor, a company that is proudly one of Ballarat’s own and enjoys the opportunity to support the local community.

The Championships kick off on Wednesday afternoon with Australia’s fastest in action in the twilight criterium on the streets of the Ballarat CBD. Buninyong will come to life on Thursday with the race of truth, the Individual Time Trial.

The iconic Mt Buninyong circuit will once again be the perfect backdrop for the weekend’s action, which begins with the inaugural MARS Australian Gran Fondo Championships on Saturday morning.

This fantastic new event will provide an opportunity for lovers of cycling to be immersed in the biggest weekend on Cycling Australia’s calendar. Amateur, age-group and recreational riders will have their chance to tackle the fully closed roads of the tough Buninyong circuit, and soak up the atmosphere in the same way as the professional riders.

“We are excited about the MARS Australian Gran Fondo Championships, a superb event that will provide a tremendous opportunity for the cycling community to test themselves on one of the world’s toughest cycling courses.” Green remarked. “And of course, tell their stories the very next day as they watch the elite fields battle it out.”

The 2016 edition marks a decade of great support from the City of Ballarat as host of the Championships, which over that time has established itself as one of Australian sport’s showcase events.

“With the City of Ballarat’s support, the Championships has been able to grow in stature every year, creating on of Australia’s most iconic sporting events,” added Green. “Our athletes and fans have embraced the event in Ballarat and this is a tremendous testament to the support and contributions of the City of Ballarat.”

Ballarat Mayor Cr Des Hudson believes the five-day event will be taken to the next level in 2016, particularly with the introduction of the inaugural Gran Fondo Championships.

“Ballarat welcomes cycling enthusiasts to our city for this prestigious national event,” Cr Hudson said. “It is a privilege to be able to offer cyclists the opportunity to ride our challenging and picturesque courses. We take this opportunity to showcase our regional city to visitors from across Australia, who will fill the town with a vibrant energy across the five days.

“Cyclists love coming to Ballarat, and we love hosting them. Each year, we see more visitors return, and with the new MARS Australian Gran Fondo Championships open event on the Saturday, we expect even more people to visit, and bring their family and friends.

“Every visitor contributes to growing and strengthening the region through their support of local business, including the City’s restaurants, cafes and attractions,” Cr Hudson added.

Of course, if this turns out someday to be the industry standard integrated handlebar-computer-braking solution then I'll eat my kevlar-reinforced aerodynamic hat.

    10-14 February 2016
The SA National Road Championships will once again be staged in KwaZulu–Natal with a four day competition programme over a five day period. The event dates are 10–14 February with the time trial competitions being staged on 10 and 11 February and the road races all happening on 13 and 14 February. There will be two competition sites in 2016 with the time trial taking place in the Wartburg / Noodsburg / Harburg area utilising the same time trial routes as were used for the 2015 African Continental Road Championships and the road races will be staged in the Westville (Durban) area using predominantly the same routes with some minor adjustments as were used when the national championships were last staged in Durban in 2014.

It is planned to stage both the time trial and road race competitions for the Para-cycling division in Wartburg on 10 and 11 February but this will be dependent on the technical aspects of the course meeting the requisite Para-cycling standards.

Heads up, Jordan Kerby (Drapac) is FLYING atm and looking like he's going for Nats, probably the TT and the TDU. He's been demolishing everyone this last month, including total destruction of my club's annual Championship Crit.

He simply ended up riding away from a group that included Jay McCarthy (Tinkoff), Michael Hepburn (Orica), Chris Williams (Norvo Nordisk), Mal Rudolph (Drapac), Jack Anderson and Josh Prete (Budget Forklifts), Nick Schultz (Etixx Conti) and Dave Edwards (Charterhouse Mason).

    Nobody could mark him

Haussler trained at Falls Creek last summer to prepare for the heat at Nats and TDU but suffered in the cold when he got back to Europe. Since he's skipping Nats and TDU this year it makes sense to stay and adjust to the cold.

Yeah, he's a nice enough guy, very quiet and relaxed. He's only just turned 23 so certainly has time on his side to try and get up to the WT. From what I've seen he's not wasting his time trying, could make a decent domestique if he keeps it up.

Bevin won by over a minute from Tom Scully of Drapac. I think Oram was third.

EDIT: My mistake, he was 4th. So 4 CQ points.

Impressive from O'Connor! I met him when we were riding to an ATTA Time Trial about 18 months ago in Perth and we got talking. He'd only started racing a few months before, coming across from Trail/XC Running. He was already on an NRS team (Satalyst) despite being so new to the sport.

He rode the Tour of Tasmania that year (2014), getting into a two man break on one stage with Wes Sulzberger (who was still at Drapac). He put the hurt on Wes all day and nearly rolled him in the sprint! Great to see him get onto a team like Avanti, O'Connor's a talent. The Scotson brothers have been racing since they were very young and are in the AIS system, so no disgrace losing to them.
