Guy Mollet's new team in France (talk about a leftfield transfer).

I've already posted it elsewhere, but the competing foreign teams will be the same in the Gran Premio as in the Vuelta.

    Cycling Team Denzel
    Strongman Campagnolo
    Canel's Specialized
    Venezuela
Bolivia (could be a pre-CT version of Equipo Bolivia)
    Cuba

and one from Romania, Poland, Chile or Argentina.

One other thing to pick up from the article is that the race will be a useful source of UCI points for local riders. Helpful for Worlds and future Olympic qualifications.

How have I completely missed this until just now? :S

    Too busy trainspotting. :P

Marin won the event last year, but I don't know yet if he'll be back to defend his title before jetting off to join Guy Mollet's new team in France.

    http://www.ciclismointernacional.com/el-tico-que-vendio-sus-recuerdos-para-alcanzar-sus-suenos-en-europa/

He will still be racing with Nestle-Giant at the Vuelta before probably making his French debut at the GP la Marseillaise.

    Quote
However, his path to get there was not easy. "Many people criticized me for selling shirts cycling had won, they were memories ..." , revealed Marin, who had to sell leotards to afford travel or visa procedures, among other things.

"I realized that what counts is my resume, no shirts, but I hope to come many more" , added our interviewee, who had to resort to this because it is still awaiting payment of the prizes of the Tour of Costa Rica 2015.

    Ah, great.
Everyone will be especially motivated to compete for the prizes in the 2016 Vuelta a Costa Rica when the organisers are yet to pay out the prize money from the 2015 edition. :fp

Equipo Bolivia won't be in Costa Rica. Prohibitively expensive especially because Fecoci can't help with air tickets, their kits aren't ready etc.

A Bolivian national team will likely take their place.

    Villalobos interview.

He doesn't feel any pressure. Got a strong team. Rojas is the man to beat blah blah blah.

More interestingly though, after San Luis he had offers from SEP San Juan and Efapel, but the Portuguese team pretty much wanted him to ride for peanuts. So he's stayed with Canels and they plan to go CT in 2017 (they said this last year though).

Gran Premio de San Jose start list:

As you can see there is no Bolivian national team, their place has been taken by the excellently/awfully named Quebexico - mainly Canadian riders, but the Padilla brothers are involved too.

The Beans are the only team that are riding the Vuelta that won't be riding the one day race. Limon Adobe Rent a Car and Sykes Autostar will get a chance instead.

Vuelta a Costa Rica start list

Outside of the big four or five names, there are also some smaller stories to follow.

Mainor Rojas: his former team may not be back to defend their honour, but our erstwhile leader from 12 months ago makes a return with Grupo Colono. He was leading by nearly 5 minutes when his team withdrew from the race in 2015.

Scott - Tele Uno - BCT: this team dominated the Vuelta de la Juventud Costa Rica this year winning four of the five stages and placing four riders in the top-5 on GC. Josue Alpizar took the win and maybe he's the name to watch out for here.

Jose Cruz - you don't see too many cyclists from El Salvador (I'm assuming that's what SAL stands for in UCI code).

    Canels domination.

    http://www.nacion.com/deportes/ciclismo/Ciclismo-Gran_Premio_de_San_Jose-Pablo_Alarcon_0_1602839839.html

With that parcour I thought a sprint was nailed on, but what do I know. After three laps a group of thirteen got away (including 5 Canels riders) and they weren't seen again. When the winning move was made from that group, they then again had the numbers advantage of a 2 v 1.

Villalobos looks in ominous form heading into the Vuelta. First stage tomorrow.

FECOCI finally put up the roadbook with profiles. Better late than never I guess.

Virtually all of the stages will start 8-9am local time (last one is mid-morning). So that's mid-afternoonish for us in Europe.

Rodriguez from the Beans took the first KoM, Vega the first meta volantes and the winner from Sunday (Alarcon) suffered a fall on the descent.

A tearful Brenes. It seems like he was the one trying to cover all the attacks. I don't think he was too happy with Vega.

PCS is on his holidays, so I may as well post this up too.

Not a bad debut for Jara, or Alpizar for that matter.

None of those five should really be a threat to the GC. Vega did have a 6th in the GC back in 2013, but that was still nearly half an hour down on Rojas.

Speaking of Rojas. JC lost 3 seconds to most of his rivals. With no bonifications, little gaps like that could be important.

An intermediate group has bridged. This includes Carlos Brenes and he took second at the final meta volantes. So it will be tight between him and Vega for that jersey.

Long sprint (wind assisted) from Santos to take the win.

Massive gap back to the peloton. Jara could have a 17-18 minute lead.
