Meldonium
« on: February 16, 2016, 23:14 »
Another athlete caught for doping with the same substance as Vorganov (meldonium): Ukrainian biathlon skier Olga Abramova, tested positive at the World Cup races in Ruhpolding in January. A B-sample analysis has not been requested.

Looks like this substance is mostly popular in Eastern Europe.

Quoting from "What is Meldonium?" that Ross Tucker links to:
    Quote
One review of the effects of Meldonium on exercise performance listed the following benefits:
    - Decreased levels of lactate and urea in blood
    - Improved economy of glycogen: level of glycogen increased in the cells during the long-lasting exercise
    - Increased endurance properties and aerobic capabilities of athletes
    - Improved functional parameters of heart activity
    - Increased physical work capabilities
    - Increased rate of recovery after maximal and sub-maximal loads
    - Activates CNS functions and protects against stress

But yeah, sure, Sharapova, Vorganov etc. all just "forgot that WADA had sent out an e-mail that this obscure and basically pointless medication is now on the dopinglist". :shh
Pull the other leg, folks. :snooty

Yep, the 'Meldonium dragnet' drags down another hapless athlete, albeit one with a much higher profile this time.

Tip of the iceberg stuff, when one considers what else might be in use for which they're not yet testing.

They should have given Meldonium to the audience she was playing for, with all that screaming of her...

    Using it for 10 years?

It's worth looking at this case a bit closer, with reference to an article in L'Equipe.

Sharapova's excuses constitute a fairly weak attempt to blind the public with science, along with a good faith admission along popular lines with a simple "I should have read my email".

She claims to have used the drug to treat a magnesium deficit, cardiac arrhythmia and diabetes in the family. Presumably the first one should be better addressed by the use of magnesium supplements, while the two others are too remote to relate to her own use of a single drug.

As the article points out, countries are required to declare the levels of imports of drugs and those reported for Meldonium were very low indeed, whilst there has been a rash of positive tests across various sports. If the figures are not wrong, the obvious implication is that the substance may have a significant outlet on the black market.

Furthermore, the AFLD's representative told L'Equipe that WADA was well aware of the geographical bias in the use of Meldonium, since the drug is not readily available in the West. Make of that what you will.

That is indeed the obvious conclusion that she is trying to prevent the public from reaching. Absolutely no justification for the use of this substance as a professional sportsperson.

By "not readily available", you mean "not licensed or marketed in the USA where Sharapova lives".

Ross Tucker - for all his faults - has been very good on this overnight. This sums it up neatly...

    https://twitter.com/Scienceofsport/status/707101985279975424

There was also an interesting mention that the clinical trials for meldonium didn't start in earnest until 2008. So how Sharapova was prescribed it in 2006 is yet another mystery[1]
     1. Hint: it's not a mystery. She cheated. And lied. And cheated some more. And got caught. And continued to lie in an attempt to look like she's telling the truth. We're wise to the games now, the cynical, wizened old sports fans that we are.

especially since she has lived in the US for 22 years and the US didn´t start trials on this drug until after Maria started taking it 10 years ago

So she reached out for a drug not on the approved drugs from the country she lived in

Head of the Gent anti-doping lab Peter Van Eenoo finds it "hard to believe" that Sharapova didn't know Meldonium was banned.

"It's a very popular product in the former states of the Soviet Union. It's used there mainly for the treatment of angina pectoris. Blood flow is also important for performance, so one suspects that it is performance enhancing.

"The early test results show that it does work, but that's based on one study and you should always be careful about that. We have to wait for confirmation.

"I find it hard to believe [that she wasn't aware] coming from someone who's so professional and has that sort of entourage.

"On the other hand, it's a tool that gets used quite frequently. It's been on the banned list for two months now. They handle it so calmly and she admits it immediately with all cards on the table, that's nonchalance. From both her and her entourage.

"Last year, some of our colleagues who tested a lot of samples from the former Soviet states found hundreds of positives on the monitoring list. So you know that, if that product ends up on the banned list, there's going to be quite a lot of positives. My estimate is that Meldonium will top the charts in 2016."

It's almost as if it's a must-have on the systemic Russian programme.

I guess, but I think it will be an old eastern block thing, not just Russian , where the drug is easy available and the athlete to athlete discussions start up, and it rolls
