[1.1] Winston Salem Cycling Classic
« on: May 29, 2016, 10:38 »
Winston Salem Cycling Classic 30th May

The Winston-Salem Cycling Classic is a two day professional cycling event.  Winston-Salem Cycling Classic consists of UCI 1.1 (ME), UCI 1.2 (WE) road races, USA Cycling NCC/USA Crit Series Criterium races (ME, WE) and a full schedule of USA Cycling sanctioned amateur racing.  Positioned between The Tour of California and The Philadelphia International Cycling Championship, the Winston-Salem Cycling Classic attracts some of the top athletes in the sport.

The only alteration from last year's bit of blurb is the non-mention of the US Nats which is ironic as it has still overshadowed this upgraded race. Information is thin on the ground and even the official race twitter account has been tweeting almost solely about the Nats.

None of the three US WT teams have the race on the calendar and Caja look to be only coming over for Philadelphia. So it might only be UHC and Novo Nordisk representing the higher ranked teams.

Link to live coverage for later today.

Murphy won the crit yesterday, but we saw on Saturday that he couldn't quite live with the leaders. Maybe Canola or Magner could be a better bet for UHC.

Perry and Craven were (I type too slow) off the front. On lap five of fourteen.

There's a ticker underneath the stream from the link above. I think it gives the order over the line on each lap, but it has best lap time and a bunch of other confusing numbers.

Fairly annoying tactics from UHC (ie. the biggest team in the race). Very few turns from Canola as he presumably is just marking it for Murphy. However that doesn't stop the other teams with good sprinters Jamis/Holowesko/Cycling Academy/Silber going through and doing a turn.

Stuff like that puts you off a team. Well, it does for me anyway.

Drumbo's pal trying to bridge to the break. Gap still around the minute mark.

That break wasn't successful, but the next one was. The field was getting very splintered at around this point. From the link above you can watch a replay of the entire race, but the action kicks off ~4h25 with an attack from Langlois just before the final lap starts (haven't watched it yet myself).

Another win notched up for Silber.

Another great effort by the whole team yesterday. Wish I could come up with something more interesting to say (maybe later) but for know I'd just like to acknowledge a few of the little things behind getting us a win yesterday. Getting a massage at 11:00 pm the day we arrived in Winston Salem. Elliot handing out bottles after his race was cut short. Ben making the main break of the day allowing us to be confident that if it stuck he would be one of the favourites for the win. The families that hosted us here and make us feel at home (well almost, my house is never this clean:) and of course, ice. So much ice. Now onto Philly.
