[2.HC] Larry H.Miller Tour of Utah
« on: July 18, 2016, 14:59 »
Larry H.Miller Tour of Utah

Showcasing some of the world’s most prestigious teams and cyclists for seven days in August, the Larry H. Miller Tour of Utah now attracts worldwide attention as the top international cycling event that follows the Tour de France.

Nearly a decade since its opening circuit, the Tour of Utah, today, stands shoulder to shoulder with the most prestigious professional bicycle stage race events as our answer to the greatest cycling challenges the world has to offer. The 704-mile course will include 52,951 vertical feet of climbing for 16 of the best men’s cycling teams in the world, solidifying the event as “America’s Toughest Stage RaceTM”. The race will pass adjacent to or through two national parks, two national monuments, four national forests and two state parks.

Source

Stage 1  »  Zion Canyon Village  ›  Cedar City   (134.2km)

They may be going up to 3000m, but Hofland and GVA won bunch sprints here in Cedar City the last time they came over this climb.

Stage 2  »  Escalante  ›  Torrey   (160km)

Torrey was the scene of Schar's epic breakaway victory in 2014, but Matthews won a sprint the year before from a fairly large group. This year sees the addition of a couple of circuits around Torrey, so a group finish is much more likely.

Stage 3  »  Richfield  ›  Payson   (193km)

We'll see a thinning of the field of potential winners on this stage. DNF Morton won the last time they finished here, but only ~20 guys were left in GC contention.

Stage 4  »  Lehi  ›  Kearns   (154km)

Two sets of circuits. We'll try a little mapping of the second one closer to the time.

Stage 5  »  Antelope Island  ›  Bountiful   (183km)

Looks almost exactly like last year's stage. Reduced group sprint likely.

Stage 6  »  Snowbasin  ›  Snowbird   (185km)

We all know this stage.

Stage 7  »  Park City  ›  Park City   (125.5km)

Ditto.

If you remember from last year, there are two build-up events before Utah: Mount Evans Hill Climb and the Cascade Classic. Last year Morton won on Mount Evans (the highest paved road in the US), but since I don't know if anyone competing at Utah this year is riding it, then the result may not be of much interest to this thread.

The Cascade Classic has lots of interest though with Rally, Jelly Belly, Holowesko, Axeon and Lupus. So far there have been stage wins for Carpenter, Zirbel (TT) and DNF just won stage three in the last few minutes.

Should be a few stages that Smiffy can target. Can't see GC being a serious option for any of the others.

The Cascade Classic has lots of interest though with Rally, Jelly Belly, Holowesko, Axeon and Lupus. So far there have been stage wins for Carpenter, Zirbel (TT) and DNF just won stage three in the last few minutes.

Stage four went to Joe Lewis and the final one to Stephen Bassett. Carpenter did just enough in the final stage to leapfrog Zirbel in the GC and take the overall. The podium was rounded out by Morton and Huffman.

KoM went to Shelden who's had a bit of a breakthrough year for Jelly Belly. It was his work on the first stage at Gila that blew the group apart and paved the way for Morton's GC win. He's popped up a few times elsewhere - Beauce springs to mind. Could be a useful tool for DNF's challenge in Utah.

Interesting to see Costa, Powless and Tao at Axeon in this, and Logan Owen for the flatter stages too.

Poland definitely didn't go as planned. The weather of course played a major part in that (post-stage 4), but even in the flat stages only Megias really showed what it takes.

Van Ijzendoorn joins as a stagiaire.

Since he was on one of my CQ teams a couple of years ago I have kept a bit of an eye on how TJ 2.0 has been getting on and I can't say he's been putting out big results. If anything he has tailed off from a performance peak back in 2013, so it's a bit of a surprise to see him get the stagiaire nod. Of course he could just be pack horse dom, every team needs them, but it wouldn't surprise me if he didn't get taken on full time by the team.

Anyway we'll see how he gets on here in Utah.

    Leadbelly's Leading Lights

    :onfire1 :onfire1 :onfire1 Dombrowski

Had little trouble last year and there's always the back-up option of Talansky (who was stronger then Craddock when he was his helper in California).

    :onfire1 :onfire1 Stetina

Very low key TdF for Stetina (using it as build up to this race?). Looked strong in California and no TT here to mess up his GC.

:onfire1 Atapuma, Morton, Acevedo, Horner and someone from Axeon

Atapupu should have a higher rating, but in contrast to the two above Americans, I think he's more focused on the Vuelta. Acevedo has been training in Colombia and Morton says he's never trained as hard, but I think the guys with one star will be fighting over the third podium spot/stage wins.

Don't forget that tomorrow's stage has a much earlier start/finish than all the others. For those of us in Europe it will be a mid-afternoon start to an early evening finish (3pm ----> 7pm if you're in the UK). The rest of the week, the finishes will be ~4hrs later.

JSG gives Morton :lol Hype train is a go
    http://www.cyclingnews.com/news/morton-looking-for-top-result-in-tour-of-utah/

Ignoring his ability on the bike, do you think his WT ambitions have any reality? Cannondale again would look like the only place I could see him kinda fitting, but has he changed enough in the two intervening years to fit in with WT and all that it entails?

Cannondale makes most sense. But could see Orica Bora working as well. Bahrain would work but can't see Morton signing for them. If Morton wants it I think he could change enough. Live in Andorra go barefoot walking with Tuft

So what does Zabel bring to the BMC table? Near the end of year three with the team, but I'm not seeing much. Maybe we've just been spoilt by all the other youngsters that have joined the team in the past few years and expect too much.

Missing U23 might have been a mistake I wonder if he gets re-signed I expect so unless he and Burgy go to Bora

Nice win for Carpenter. He was with Schar in the break back in 2014. Robin got caught by the peloton though, while Michael just held on. So yesterday was a bit of revenge on Torrey for him.

I think he should be able to hold on today anyway. Could be his jersey till stage six.

    Stage 4  »  Lehi  ›  Kearns   (154km)

Two sets of circuits. We'll try a little mapping of the second one closer to the time.

    http://www.cronoescalada.com/index.php/tracks/view/189949

Nothing of that much interest to report from the finishing circuit, but as we saw on stage one, there aren't any dominant sprint teams here, so we could still see successful attacks.

    Was pretty fun racing

Into the Base of Mt Nebo Pellaud was solo and BMC doing damage to the Peloton - it went from a full peloton to 16 riders ish in 1 km  :lol Eisenhart road a great race

Morton attacked Talansky followed and for a while TJE just kept them hanging , finally Talansky latched onto Mortons wheel, Costa attacked which  El Puma watched for 10 seconds to many, Cosata bridged and attacked, Morton having none of it as he dragged Talansky back to the kids wheel.

El Puma had screwed up but had Britton for company, they were somewhere around 30 down on the leading 3 with TJE and Joey Rosskope trying to bridge to their Leader.

Not much really happened for a long time as the riders were all climbing at the same speed, until about 2 km to the top of Nebo when El Puma and Britton starting loosing time, I watch a little of the descent and went to be with 20 km to go

Always a great start to the day to see Morton win
