So here we are. They deserve it. A thread dedicated to all pre-Elite categories. U23, Juniors or Novices (I never knew how you, Anglos named the pre-Junior category. In Belgium we have "débutants/nieuwelingen" which means beginners or well I thought I saw the word novices on some CN articles. The French have the "cadet" category for riders aged 15).

So I'll start with Junior Mathias Lefeber:

(Gazet van Antwerpen 3 aug 2016, they put him the Novice category but he's most definitely a Junior)

Mathias won in Peer his third win of the season (after a win in Sint-Katelijne-Waver & Wetteren) but in a race with a depleted field. Yet he says "in every victory, the winner has his credit". His scheduled o go on holiday soon after in Ausria where he's gonna work on his condition with his younger sister who is a first year novice herself.

Mathias is primarily a trackie. Hes very ambitious and has already been Belgian champion and won the Swiss Six-Days in Aigle in which he raced against U23 riders. His road racing are build up for the track season, he wants to focus on Sixes next year.

Another great track talent is Gerben Thijssen of Genk. I've already referred to him in the track result thread: http://velorooms.com/index.php?topic=6050.30

    Quote
Gerben Thijssen got a silver medal in the Madison and a bronze medal in the Point Race at the U23 Euro championship in Montichiari.

Three weeks before he underwent a shoulder injury. The orthopedist had advised him rest till end August.

A few months ago he contracted the Lyme disease which forced him to follow a strong cure of antibiotics and of course stop competing.

He'll race next ear for the U23 Lotto Soudal team. "For me, the dream team". He put the other offers aside right after Lotto contacted him. He will get the chance to combine track & road there.  ;)

    (Belang van Limburg)

Gerben won last weekend his 6th road race this season, the first one in a kermess, in Zutendael. Last week, he raced in Kortessem as favourite but was surprised but still glad with 2nd place, he easily won the sprint for second (no mention of who won the race !!). Nieuwsblad referred to him as a phenom: http://www.nieuwsblad.be/cnt/dmf20160828_02442847

He's had an impressive list of misfortune, including a broken collarbone at the Trofeo Carlsberg in which he yet won two stages.

This week he should have raced in Remouchamps but Carlo Bomans advised against it, because it's too hilly for him. Instead he went on racing a few smaller races, like Zutendael.

He still hopes for a selection for the Worlds and will prepare 100% for it.

Zutendael is a smaller race but therefore wheelsucking is constant, he says and he should never leave rooms for anybody in the last lap, so he learnt from last week. In the sprint there was no match on him, as can be seen on the picture. By the way, next year, he races in the U23 category for Lotto-Soudal. Actually before this race, he was stolen all his 6 bikes, including his race bike, and TT bike. So he'd ask his future team for help and that's why he's won the race on a Ridley Lotto bike.  :D

By the way, I hadn't seen that there was already a U23 thread, so let's restrict this thread to the juniors or younger categories.  ;)
