2016 Vuelta CQ Game
« on: August 15, 2016, 18:38 »
Time for the last of these games for this year:

Team of exactly nine riders  all of whom must be in the race.
Budget    Budget will be 3500 points.  If you don't leave your team until the last moment, I'll be able to warn you of errors and give you an idea of what substitutions I would make unless you make your own.  The sooner you enter, the more time you will have to think again if necessary.

Price of riders
CQ current score as at 14th August, with points accumulated over 12 months leading up to that date, for which the update file that CQ released on Monday 15th will be considered definitive.
There is a Dropbox spreadsheet of riders likely to participate and their prices for the game, and a facility for checking the team total.

Submitting your team
By personal message to me, either here or at CN.
Please send the team with names formatted as per CQ. (Surname[space]Forename and nothing else: Spanish/Portuguese names need particular care. It makes an enormous difference to the efficiency of adding teams.  If you use the dropbox spreadsheet it will be a simple copy and paste job.

Deadline
The start of the race, which I believe to be Saturday 20th May at 17:25 (UK time)

Scoring
Points issued according to the points tables of CQ (column GT2).  Note there are no points issued for the young rider category.

Entries (to 1:40 am Saturday UK time, little under 16 hours to go)

There should be a total of 1991 on Trudgin's score in that previous post, but it won't let me post it!

11 teams in so far, 43 different riders selected, of whom 22 are unique picks, and 3 are in more than half the teams.

Still plenty of time to make your selection: I believe that the dropbox selector sheet in the OP is now complete with all starters, barring last minute changes.

A flurry of entries last night: now 20 teams in, 58 different riders nominated, with 24 of them unique picks.

3 riders are on more than half the teams, and only 3 different riders costing more than twice the average spend (ie >777) so far, with no-one taking more than one of them.

    About 30 hours to go...

Early hours of Saturday morning, 33 teams in, 78 riders selected, 33 unique picks, 4 on more than half the teams.

5 different expensive riders selected: 2 teams have doubled up on these, one has opted for no expensive member.

About 15 1/2 hours from the timestamp on this post for your entries.

#: Capt Cavman had named John Degenkolb, a non-entrant in the Vuelta, in his team.  My principle in such cases (apart from letting the manager know as soon as I can and hoping they rejig their team) is to replace the non-contestant with the next most expensive member of the same team, which is why Ludvigsson is now part of that team.

I have, in recent editions, been making up an analysis of teams on the basis of the expensive riders chosen, because normally there has been a big spread of tactics identifiable by picking out riders who cost at least twice the average spend.

This time around, it will tell us very little, as 32 teams have only Contador in the 777+ price bracket.
3 of the Contadorists have a second high priced rider: Leadbelly and Geraint Too Fast link him with Chaves, while LightBing combines Contador with his unique pick of Brambilla.

Of the 11 teams that do not have a Contador foundation, Crevaison, DJW and Josedin have gone for Chaves, NairoQ and Vladimir for Quintana, Amis Velo for Froome and ChrisDK for Gilbert.   Which leaves four teams with a much wider spread of their budgets, having eschewed all the expensive riders: Bicycle Boy, Carlos Algatrensig, Hayabusa and Vredeling.

Why oh why didn't I listen to my head and not pick Contador. Duh.

    Stage 1 TTT

    Green points
These are the guaranteed points: stage points and red jersey wearer points.  They can't be taken away (except for doping), so it does not matter whether the rider reaches Madrid.  They are not the main competition, but there will be a table most days, because it avoids the extreme volatility of the main game in the early stages.  If you want to take pride in your standing, feel free.

KENNAUGH Peter   35 pts   2 teams
    FROOME Chris   17   1
    KÖNIG Leopold   17   13

    Red points
This is the main classification, what I previously referred to as the projected points, because it is made up of the points from stage points and red jersey wearer (as in the red sect in the red section), but also the GC points, and points for the top ten in points and mountains classifications, as if the race were to finish today.  This table is very volatile, especially after the more decisive stages, but it settles down towards the end of the race, and this is the main title.

This first set of standings should not be considered to be much of an indicator, it is useful for my spreadsheet to be tested.  There are two reasons not to read too much into it: it is predicated upon standings like Puccio being in second place in GC, which no-one expects in 3 weeks time, and also because the CN race report has many positional errors, like Van Garderen being in 142nd place rather than 22nd, but (for reasons of spreadsheet format) that is the results service I am dependent on.

That being said, for what it is worth, the very temporary standings are:
    1   Carlo_Algatrensig   805
    2   AmisVelo   742
    3   Postmanhat   656

If you want to take pride in your standing, feel free.

I will happily take pride in my current standing given I expect to be much nearer the other end of the table later in the race.

This took ages: CN are not being consistent with the way they give riders' names in their results tables, which plays havoc with my spreadsheet.
It's not worth showing projected points as a change from yesterday, as so many of yesterday's standings were wrong.  This is, I believe, accurate, but a long way away from a confident indicator of final positions.

    Stage 3 First hilltop finish.

Bad day for our two most popular picks: Lopez becomes a stage hunter at best, and Contador leaves himself with more ground to make up.

    Changes today

For those unfamiliar, this shows the main changes in projected points on the day.  Because they are projections of what would happen if these wer final position, scores can be negative, if a rider slips down the GC or the Point or Mountain classifications.  I only show the bigger changes each day, and only those riders that have been chosen by managers in the game.

    Standings
Many riders have moved much nearer to their realistic GC position, causing huge changes in our positions.  17 teams have a change of at least ten places since stage 2.   For example, the selection of Rojas, whose rather unrealistic second place in GC yesterday had ChrisDK at the top of the table, makes for a dramatic tumble as he falls rapidly to a more realistic GC position, but Chris' 23 place fall pales compared to the 31 place rise of Rote Laterne.  Rote Laterne has however, like Murali and Crevaison, lost one of his major investments in Warren Barguil.

Sorry for the delay: household internet down last night.

    Stage 4

I suspect that we might get quite a few of these: breakaway wins with riders that few of us chose, so very little happening on the Green points, but some unfortunate rider having a GC catastrophe (or, less often, a great day making someone storm up the rankings) shaking up the red points a bit.

    Green points

A convincing looking lead, but dependent on Atapuma remaining in red.  Anyone expecting that?
Despite his massively biggest score of the day,Bicycle Boy is not the highest riser on the day: Trudgin (11 spots) and Hayabusa (9) move up more quickly than Bicycle Boy or Vladimir (who matches BB's 7 place rise).

    Stage 5

    Green points
Several popular picks are now clearly unsuccessful: at least in Meersman there is one popular pick scoring at or above expectations.

    MEERSMAN Gianni   70   18   teams
    FELLINE Fabio   40   0   team
    REZA Kévin   25   1   team

    VANBILSEN Kenneth   2   3   teams
GONÇALVES Jose Isidro Maciel   1   1   team

1   Josedin   95 (Meersman and Reza)
2   BicycleBoy   88  (Meersman and Atapuma)
3   Leadbelly   72 (Meersman and Van Bilsen)
4=   Rest of Meersman teams   70
    19=   Bbass, Mellow_Velo   3 (Drucker)

Sprint stages normally make little impact here.
I only half trust these rankings not to be changed as more riders get adjusted by the 3km rule, but here it is.

MEERSMAN Gianni   115 points   18 teams
    REZA Kévin   26   1

    ANTON HERNANDEZ Igor   -33   4
    YATES Simon   -40   26
    KRUIJSWIJK Steven   -42   21

The points lost by Yates, following a 30 point loss yesterday, are at least recoverable: those lost by the nearly as popular Kruijswijk are terminal.

Comodoro has a 12 place rise, but more significant is Del1962's 2 place rise to take Geraint's podium spot, while Leadbelly and JosephD move into the top ten.

    Stage 6

Yates is a popular pick, who was beginning too make those who had selected him doubt the wisdom of that choice, although that will have been in part due to the time deductions yesterday that were restored overnight.

    Standings
Three of the top four here have picked stage winners of four of the five individual stages: Bicycle Boy only has 3 stage wins and a second, but is racking up the red jersey bonus points.

    Red points
For a few riders, most notably Yates, some of the point difference today is the late application of the three minute rule to some of yesterday's riders.

    Today's point changes
YATES Simon   162 points   26 teams
    LATOUR Pierre   36   2
    KÖNIG Leopold   25   13
    FRAILE MATARRANZ Omar   25   5

    DE CLERCQ Bart   -10   2
    ANTON HERNANDEZ Igor   -12   4
    HUZARSKI Bartosz   -13   5
LOPEZ MORENO Miguel Angel   -15   28
    KISERLOVSKI Robert   -15   4
    GENIEZ Alexandre   -30   6

Lopez had already dented the hopes of his 28 teams with the time lost on stage 2: now he removes any last ambitions for stage points.

26 Yates teams got a decent haul of points today:
    1   DJW   239
    2   AmisVelo   212

    Standings
The only change in the top 5 is Los Brolin moving two places up: DJW, Minessa and NairoQ moveinto the top ten, replacing Josedin, Leadbelly and JosephD, and Mellow Velo's ten place rise is the best of the day.

    Changes today
If there were no 3 km rule, the points would have been somewhat shuffled, but once the rule had been applied, this was pretty much null as far as the game is concerned.

Stage 8 The crazy steep wall

Is this the beginning of the prominence of the two Quintana teams, or maybe the start of the resurgence of the ost popukar pick, Contador, or is any change today a temporary phenomenon?

The two big positive scorers don't quite emulate Quintana in reaching the top: NairoQ nearly makes it, moving from 10th to 2nd, while Vladimir is the biggest riser of the day, up 18 places to 7th.  The day's big point loser has exactly the same ranking fall as the cause of that loss, dropping from 1st to 6th.  Our new leader had a fairly average day, but it was enough to move up from second.

    Stage 11  Pena Cabarga

The steep end to a flat stage after the rest day repeated, more or less, the effect of the steep end to a flat-ish stage before the rest day.  Again, popular riders concentrated around the lower point scorers.

    On the day

Other than Froome overtaking Valverde for 2nd, this is a case of lots of riders moving up a place or two as a much smaller number of riders (most notably De La Cruz and Brambilla) move down several.

The top three of the day look increasing likely to be battling it out for the honours, as the rare picks of Froome (Amis Velo) and Quintana (NairoQ and Vladimir) look to be making this a two horse race.

    Standings

The top ten is made up of exactly the same ten teams as on Monday, but the only one not to change place at all is NairoQ, who remains first.  I get to share biggest mover honours with Geraint, albeit from a much lower base.
