Sorry: totally forgot that I hadn't yet done this...

Stage 12  Bilbao

Green points
Perhaps I had subconsciously told myself how insignificant the day was: no-one in the top nine finishers were chosen.

KEUKELEIRE Jens   70pts   0   team
BOUET Maxime   40   0   team
FELLINE Fabio   25   0   team
QUINTANA ROJAS Nairo Alexander   18   2   teams
SBARAGLI Kristian   15   0   team
SANCHEZ GIL Luis Leon   10   0   team
BILBAO LOPEZ DE ARMENTIA Pello   7   0   team
BAKELANTS Jan   5   0   team
VALVERDE BELMONTE Alejandro   3   0   team
DILLIER Silvan   2   0   team
FRANK Mathias   1   14   team

Neither of the Quintana teams have Frank, so 18 points for Quintata teams, 1 for Frankish selections.

Red points
Equally uneventful...

MONFORT Maxime   8pts   1 team
HERMANS Ben   8   2
WYSS Marcel   8   1
SICARD Romain   8   1
FRANK Mathias   5   14
TROFIMOV Yury   5   1

ELISSONDE Kenny   -11   2
ATAPUMA HURTADO Jhon Darwin   -12   1
HAAS Nathan   -15   5
BRAMBILLA Gianluca   -16   1

DJW and Postmanhat are +7 on the day, Bicycle Boy is -22, everyone else in between with fairly trivial scores.

Two thirds of us don't change position at all, the only changes in the top ten are Geraint TooFast and Mellow Velo overtaking Los Brolin and Kazistuta respectively.

Stage 13 Stalemate in the Basque Country

    Green points
None of the top ten today were selected (surely a first in our GC games), so the only red points, rather contradictorily, are the 18 red jersey points for Quintana.  So having earned 36 points on this basis, against a maximum of 1 point for any other team, in the last two days, NairoQ and Vladimir are now up to 2nd and 10th respectiveky in this category.

    Red points
No GC changes above 45th place, nor in points classification above 8th, so the main changes (including more than enough losses to cancel out Quintana's red jersey bonus) arise from being overtaken by Lagutin in the Kom classification), so there are only losses today.

LOPEZ GARCIA David   -1 pts   2 teams
DE LA CRUZ MELGAREJO David   -1   6

Today makes yesterday look like a major reshuffle.  No-one moves by more than one place, and more than three quarters of us don't even do that, and the most significant change is the 19th and 20th placed teams swapping positions.

Not really the headline of the day, but the slump in Konig's GC rank (with the points benefit to all those who passed him) is probably the biggest effect of the dayas far as the game is concerned.  Of course, it might also puncture any remaining hope on the part of  Amis Velo, or fear from NairoQ and Vladimir.

    Standings

Vladimir becomes the leader, mainly by virtue of not having Konig, in contrast to the other Quintana team (NairoQ, now 2nd) , and Hakkie rises from 10th to the third podium spot, with Amis Velo falling to 5th.  Only 8 teams did not change position, and while Luxembourg Finest matched Hakkie's 7 point rise, there were three teams who suffer the ignominy of falling 10 (Hayabusa, Bbass) or even 14 (18-Valve) places.

    Standings
As you have probably gathered by now, this was not a day to change much.  Bbass and LightBing each move up 3, 14 teams each move up one place and a similar number take a concommitant drop.  The highest place to change is Mellow Velo's annexation of 6th place.

Amis Velo was top of the day's scorers, so regains his place on the podium.  DJW almost got the days biggest rise (just pipped by Hugo87),but his 4 plce rise lifts him into the top ten, replacing Geraint TooFast.

I haven't watched it or heard any report, but as predicted, little impact on the game.

So mirroring the Quintana-Froome-Contador putative podium, we have 2 Quintana teams, followed by the team with Froome as a unique pick, and then dozens of Contador-led teams.

    Vladimir:
    QUINTANA ROJAS Nairo Alexander   915
    TALANSKY Andrew   248
    SCARPONI Michele   203
    ELISSONDE Kenny   194
    GESINK Robert   179
    CATTANEO Mattia   30
    ROLLAND Pierre   23
    SICARD Romain   15
    (ANTON HERNANDEZ Igor   5)

    NairoQ 2nd @ 138 pts
    QUINTANA ROJAS Nairo Alexander   915
    YATES Simon   315
    GESINK Robert   179
    KÖNIG Leopold   126
    PERAUD Jean-Christophe   104
    DOMBROWSKI Joseph Lloyd   15
    VANOTTI Alessandro   15
    JAUREGUI Quentin   15
    (LOPEZ MORENO Miguel Angel   0)

    Amis Velo 3rd @ 184 pts

    FROOME Chris   597
    YATES Simon   315
    TALANSKY Andrew   248
    SCARPONI Michele   203
    KÖNIG Leopold   126
    FRANK Mathias   101
    RESTREPO VALENCIA Jhonatan   21
    DOMBROWSKI Joseph Lloyd   15
    (VANBILSEN Kenneth   2)

Even with the early demise of Lopez, the advantage had seemed to be with Nairo Q until Konig got onto the megabus on Sunday. Konig having lost in the region of 200 points that day undermined what otherwise would have been a very tight group of three at the top of the race.

Watching halfway through the stage, it looks like Elissonde will lose some of Vladimir's lead, and might be that another strong stage from Gesink might yet bring NairoQ close to the top if the real Nairo stays in red, but barring a key DNF, Vladimir seems to have the better of it among the two Quintana teams.
Amis Velo might still have designs on 2nd, even if Froome does not get the lead, with Frank in the break if Gesink does not stay up there.  Of course, if Froome manages to overhaul those 81 seconds, the title is surely Amis Velo's.

Minessa has a noteworthy 145 point margin over any of the other 35 Contador teams, with a well balanced team including decent returns from Yates, Scarponi, Meersman,  and Gesink, honourable back up from Hermans and Peraud, and Schartzmann being one of the few riders to be in profit in this race.  It would however require something either extraordinary or tragic for him, or any of the Albertistas, to make the podium.

Stage 20 Aitana, the last real chance

    Green points
    LATOUR Pierre   70pts   2 teams
ATAPUMA HURTADO Jhon Darwin   40   1
    FELLINE Fabio   25   0
QUINTANA ROJAS Nairo Alexander   19   2
    FRANK Mathias   15   14
    GESINK Robert   10   11
    DE CLERCQ Bart   7   2
    MOLARD Rudy   5   0
    CALMEJANE Lilian   3   0
CHAVES RUBIO Jhoan Esteban   2   5

    1   18Valve   80 (Latour & Gesink)
    2   BigMac   70 (Latour)
    3   BicycleBoy   40 (Atapuma)
    4=   NairoQ, Vladimir   29 (Quintana)

    29=   GeraintTooFast, Josedin   2 (Chaves)
    31   The rest   0

    Standings
A win for Meersman or Cort Nielsen could yet win this category for Murrjt, but NairoQ has been in the lead for a long time:

    1   NairoQ   704
    2   Murrjt   647
    3   Vladimir   640

    Red points
The change in leadership of the points classification made no difference, and in the KoM in made very little, but Contador's fall from the podium takes a toll on 3/4 of teams, and a few suffer even more from the fates of Sanchez and Scarponi.  Where many teams lost points, a few gained by filling those lost places.

    Almost final standings

The gap between the top two is greatly reduced, but it is hard to see sprinters capable of closing the 31 pt gap in NairoQ's team.  Murrjt is both the highest placed to have changed position, and the biggest (5 place) riser of the day.  DJW is also an entry to the top ten.  Although Chaves has gained 3rd place, five of the Contador teams remain above the highest Chaves team (DJW).

    1   Vladimir   1762
    2   NairoQ   1731
    3   AmisVelo   1580

Etixx, Orica and Lotto Soudal all look likely to finish with all 9 of their starters, while FdJ will bring (a maximum of) 5 riders to the finish line.

Regardless of who should have been eliminated a week ago, and without denying that we have seen some DNFs on final day parades in recent GTs, here's the analysis of how DNFs might have impinged on our teams.

39 riders have dropped out so far, 25 of them on at least one of our teams:
LOPEZ MORENO Miguel Angel   28 teams   623 pt cost
    KRUIJSWIJK Steven   21   660  1 pt earned
    JANSE VAN RENSBURG Jacques   6   22   7
    HAAS Nathan   5      143   10
    HUZARSKI Bartosz   5   52   5
    SANCHEZ GONZALEZ Samuel   5   517   7
    ANTON HERNANDEZ Igor   4   174   5
    KISERLOVSKI Robert   4   93
    BARGUIL Warren   3   595
    BATTAGLIN Enrico   3   136    7
    REYNES MIMO Vicente   3   58
    TAARAMÄE Rein    3    374
    VANBILSEN Kenneth    3   36    2
    CLARKE Simon   2   193    1
    MALACARNE Davide   2   53

    GILBERT Philippe   1   993      18
    ROJAS GIL Jose Joaquin   1   444      10

Number of withdrawn riders in each team:

Stage 21 Final precession, final scores

    Green points

I am strongly minded to exclude the leader jersey points from this classification in future editions, as they unduly slant this towards those likely to be top of the main competition.   And just as I was thinking that, this happens:

CORT NIELSEN Magnus   70   3   teams
    BENNATI Daniele   40   0   team
    MEERSMAN Gianni   25   18   teams
    SBARAGLI Kristian   15   0   teams
    ARNDT Nikias   10   2   teams
    MANZIN Lorrenzo   7   1   team
    HARDY Romain   5   0   team
RESTREPO VALENCIA Jhonatan   3   7   teams
    SELIG Rüdiger   2   1   team
    PUCCIO Salvatore   1   0   team

1=   Murrjt, Vredeling   95 (Nielsen and Meersman)
    3   Slapshot   70 (Nielsen)
    4   Laarsland   35 (Meersman, Arndt)
    5   Comodoro   32 (Meersman, Manzin)
    6   JosephD   28 (Meersman, Restrepo)
    7   Other Meersman teams   25
    20   Murali   10
    21   LightBing   5
    22=   AmisVelo, Bbass, Hakkie2   , Joelsim, Shalgo   3
    27   The rest   0

Standings  Final, but still the minor competition
At the very end, and on the stage on which there are no red jersey points, the teams whose scores are thus bolstered yield to Murrjt.
    1   Murrjt   742
    2   NairoQ   704
    3   Vladimir   640
    4   Vredeling   549
    5   Mellow_Velo   544
    6   Minessa   528
    7   Kazistuta   526
    8   18Valve   522
    9   AmisVelo   505
    10   Del1962   480
    11   BicycleBoy   456
    12   Capt_Cavman   450
    13   ChrisDK   443
    14   Laarsland   404
    15   LosBrolin   398
    16   Hugo87   397
    17   Josedin   387
    18   Hakkie2   384
    19   Rote_Laterne   375
    20   Bbass   373
    21   SemirS   371
    22   JustSomeGuy   357
    23   Leadbelly   353
    24   Comodoro   349
    24   DJW   349
    26   ArchieBoy   339
    27   Carlo_Algatrensig   333
    28   Search   316
    29   JosephD   312
    30   Slapshot   308
    31   GeraintTooFast   243
    32   BigMac   220
    33   Murali   211
    34   Crevaison   187
    35   Hayabusa   184
    36   Shalgo   176
    37   Postmanhat   169
    38   LightBing   162
    39   Yellow_Knight   154
    40   BluesInTheBottle   153
    41   Joelsim   143
    42   Armchair_Cyclist   140
    43   USPostal   62
    44   Trudgin   59
    45   LuxembourgFinest   56
    46   GPBlanco   47
       Collective_Wisdom   428

The 12 days of bonus points were worth the equivalent of a little more than 3 stage wins for the Quintana teams.  Without these points, this would have looked like this:
    1   Murrjt   742
    2   Vredeling   549
    3   Minessa   528
    4   Mellow_Velo   526
    4   Kazistuta   526
    6   18Valve   522
    7   AmisVelo   505
    8   NairoQ   488
    9   Del1962   480
    10   Capt_Cavman   450
    11   ChrisDK   425
    12   Vladimir   424
    13   Laarsland   404
    14   LosBrolin   398
    15   Hugo87   397
    16   BicycleBoy   384
    17   Josedin   369
    18   Hakkie2   366
    19   Rote_Laterne   375
    20   Bbass   373

    Red points
I'm no fan of these last day parades, and the underwhelming effect on the game does nothing to make me more enthusiastic:

CORT NIELSEN Magnus   70pts   3 teams
    MEERSMAN Gianni   25   18
    ARNDT Nikias   10   2
    MANZIN Lorrenzo   7   1

       Collective_Wisdom   25

    Final Standings
Murrjt gets into the top five at the last, and Capt Cavman likeways sneaks into the top ten, while Vredeling has a remarkable 6 place rise on a day of so little change.

  • Of course, if this turns out someday to be the industry standard integrated handlebar-computer-braking solution then I'll eat my kevlar-reinforced aerodynamic hat.

Murrjt gets into the top five at the last, and Capt Cavman likeways sneaks into the top ten,

Apart from using the word, 'sneaks' when you clearly meant to say, 'Capt Cavman likeways strides majestically into the top ten', your efforts are hugely appreciated.

Congratulations to the winners, I'm guessing that Amis Velo would have won by many hundreds of points had SKY/OBE not made a mess of Stage 15, but picking the winner is still what the game is all about in essence.

Given that you had chosen Degenkolb for your team, and that without the 40 points that Tobiasson (who I swapped into your team in place of non-entrant Degenkolb) earned for you, you would have been 13th, I reckon "sneaks" is fairly generous.

19 teams took part in my 4 short games (Spring Classics and the three GTs), and so get free entry into the
    Four Seasons Championship

Greg Van Avermaet-like, Vladimir started the year winning early (top of the Classics game), and was winning again at the end (top in this Vuelta game): no surprises about who won the annual overall combination then.

And if you want to do any further analysis, or think you can work out a better best possible team, or simply to see where your selection went wrong, the spreadsheet that did all the work is here
