Former DEA agent Jack Robertson was doing a Reddit AMA today. He had an interesting answer when he was asked if he was surprised when the Armstrong criminal case was dropped

    Quote
Without question!! There was no explanation given by the US Attorney in LA, & he admitted it was a strong case. He did this unilaterally w/o speaking to his AUSAs or the law enforcement heads. This implies to me that pressure came from somewhere to prompt this dismissal. I have long felt this should be investigated to see if someone did a favor. If I ever interviewed Armstrong, it would be my very first question.

Ninja JSG strikes again. Was just about to post the same.

Interesting read - the US Government getting its retaliation in early and trying to close down one of Armstrong's lines of defence.

Meanwhile, if they are really seeking $100 million, Lance has had plenty of time to squirrel his money away somewhere untouchable...

    Interesting.

between the payouts for all the other actions, it has already cost him a fair amount.  I dont know that he would have $100 mil tucked away in his corner office anywhere.

I dont know enough about these cases to even hazard a guess at how it would go - but surely USPS would have to prove loss at some point?  and they didnt really lose out of it

I think if it was a "normal" sponsor, you'd be right. But this case is based on the 'False Claims Act'. Assuming we take Wikipedia as a truthful source, this "is an American federal law that imposes liability on persons and companies (typically federal contractors) who defraud governmental programs."

So basically, Armstrong cheated his way through his career, but claimed to race clean. Because the USPS sponsorship was predicated on Armstrong racing and winning clean, this constitutes a false claim for income (as sponsorship) from the US Government.

At least, that's how I interpret it. Where's a lawyer when you need one? L'arri? Barrus?
