The race will include six sprint stages, eight stages of medium difficulty climbing, five highly testing climbing stages and two individual time trials (for a total of 67.2km) including the stage that will close the 100th Giro, from the famous Monza racetrack to the Milan Cathedral. The iconic Stelvio Pass is the 2017 Cima Coppi.

Certainly looks to be a better balanced route than the Tour and it also has more teeth.

Looks a fine GT, wouldn't have any complaints if it were any other Giro. However, this is the 100th Giro, so I'd have expected something special. This isn't.

Good news is clear: two time trials of ok length, no TTT, no procession sprint on the final day, early MTF to avoid backloading, and two well-designed mountain stages in 16 & 18.

But there's a number of problems with the parcours. No strade bianchi even though it would easily have been possible; two highly disappointing final mountain stages; no good medium mountains; and missing a number of great opportunities to actualle celebrate the Giro's history rather than another year of fawning over Pantani (seriously, Oropa? Is there one more pointless climb in Italy?).

But most important for me personally: there is just one good weekend stage, Blockhaus - and even that one is what you expect from a Vuelta stage, not one from the Giro. All those people who work like regular folk will be condemned to watching the good stages on highlights or recorded, while being able to watch the pointless stages they placed in the weekends.

Would have been a 7 out of 10 in any other year - for the 100th edition, I give it a 5.

Everything being equal he would but it's not. Sky can't send a team to France without a realistic chance of winning and they only have one man capable.

    Have we got a 2017 Giro thread yet? I didn't see it.[1]

    This news:

makes me very optimistic that we may have a WONDERFUL Giro 2017!

Just watched the route promo vid. I have to say, this is rather mild for a Giro, eh? No serious climbing until the 3rd week? Well - one serious stage before - but only one.

Still, count me in. I'll be cheering for Dumoulin. Rouge!  :D

Surely Sergio Henao must be thinking it's time to leave Sky at the end of this year, would be a decent Giro leader for plenty of WT teams and can lead in the Ardennes.

This should be the best GT of the year. As far as I can see there is no one main favourite, it could go any of about 10 ways.

Because a two up captain strategy always ends well....

To be fair, it might work on other teams, but I can't see it working on this one.
