Fancy Bear hack on WADA and the TUE debate
« on: September 13, 2016, 16:52 »
Anonymous apparently hacked WADA files and have started presenting them on a truly awfully-designed website:
http://fancybear.net/

So far there's nothing much, though ...
Simone Biles apparently takes Ritalin, and has/had a TUE for amphetamines.
Some female US baskatballer I've never heard of had a TUE for cortisone in 2014.
And the Williams brothers sisters have TUEs for all sorts of things.

Aside from these, in my opinion, relatively unsurprising 'revelations', this (re-)opens the question of whether or not TUEs should be public, and if so, to what degree?
Incidentally, I asked that question on Twitter last month:

I don't think I've been involved in a TUE conversation that started with the words, "Should TUEs be permitted?" let alone made public.

The whole area is so murky that it would be simplest to just remove it. But I'm sure there are valid arguments as to why we can't.

I agree no TUEs either you are injured or not

    WADA statement:

Remember Stepanova saying someone had hacked into her ADAMS account?
This hack was probably done by the same people.

well, first of all this seems to be Russian propaganda, to show that the rest of the world is evil as well. And don't forget that those are the same guys which hacked Stepanova's account to make her know, that she will never be able to live in piece again, and that they will find her wherever she hides.

If this whole thing starts a debate about potential TUE abuse and follows with stricter rules, I very much welcome it - but those leaked files don't seem to include too many explosive information.

Very much agree with this whole post

Nothing to see here so far but it would be great if this changed to whole system

this is interesting, and good to see. I didn't expect the number to be so low. But it probably also shows that the Simon Yates incident wasn't "just a formality", with only a handful of TUEs approved every year.

the change has been said to be due to change in many Asthma meds not requiring TUEs  but levels being the tipping point for a positive

That would have been one more for 2016 had Orica filled in their forms for Simon Yates correctly.

either that, or it means that he would not have gotten a TUE approved anyway

Asthma meds are properly abused in cycling.

This just confirms what I've been saying all along, WADA is complicit there is plenty of backdated and retroactive TUEs. That's on them. They choose not to pursue a failed test, and quite literally wrote it off, without anyone knowing. Its pathetic and embarrassing. They set the standard, the athletes just follow.

I'm sorry if I've missed this somewhere along the line or misunderstood, but who failed a test which WADA then didn't pursue?
