Yesterday Madiot and co (Does that include Lavenu? It always seem to be the FDJ man frothing at the mouth about something) were threatening the same if they had done the opposite. Kind of a lose-lose situation.

Anyway the French sabre rattling came across as just a gentle reminder to not change their minds today. The rumours about the new races not being compulsory has been about for a bit.

The new WT races were mentioned as not being compulsory when they became WT races.

Obviously the onus is on the teams to compete and score points to stay a WT team.*

I read this yesterday Its pretty long and not a huge amount of news but worth the read as Oceania and The US wonder what next

    https://cyclingtips.com/2016/11/commentary-the-us-domestic-road-scene-must-adapt-to-a-changing-cycling-landscape/

I passed comment that we still didn´t know if Conti teams could ride the new WT races

Neal Rogers replied and said he has received an email that Conti teams can not ride

    https://twitter.com/nealrogers/status/798249302690643968

which kicked off a twitter chat

Really odd way to develop Cycling

Races like the Cadel Evans Cali might have trouble filling fields and if they do teams like Avanti , Axeon will miss huge chances for their riders to shine

Yeah, well, flip the lower rungs who develop the riders the top level is dependent on. The UCI cares only for the money-making WorldTour.

It's a case of expansion to quickly. A race should only be able to go from .HC to WT if it is already being filled with WT and PC teams so I think it was right to promote races like Strade Bianche, DDV and Omloop if the race organisers wanted to. All the others just don't look like they really add anything to the WT.

    Exactly.

Since I love spreadsheets, I've made a table of the participation statistics for the new WT races, covering the 2014, 2015, and 2016 seasons:
Race Year WT PCT CT Nat. Pro %
    Great Ocean Road Race 2016 9 5 7 1 63.64
    Tour of Qatar 2016 8 9 1 0 94.44
    Abu Dhabi Tour 2016 11 5 3 0 84.21
    Omloop Het Nieuwsblad 2016 12 12 1 0 96.00
    Strade Bianche 2016 12 6 0 0 100.00
    Dwars door Vlaanderen 2016 11 11 0 0 100.00
    Tour of Turkey 2016 2 8 6 0 62.50
    Eschborn-Frankfurt 2016 4 11 8 0 65.22
    Tour of California 2016 10 3 5 0 72.22
    RideLondon-Surrey Classic 2016 7 9 7 2 64.00
    Great Ocean Road Race 2015 8 4 7 1 60.00
    Tour of Qatar 2015 13 5 0 0 100.00
    Abu Dhabi Tour 2015 10 5 2 1 83.33
    Omloop Het Nieuwsblad 2015 10 13 0 0 100.00
    Strade Bianche 2015 13 6 0 0 100.00
    Dwars door Vlaanderen 2015 13 9 0 0 100.00
    Tour of Turkey 2015 6 14 1 0 95.24
    Eschborn-Frankfurt 2015 0 0 0 0 0.00
    Tour of California 2015 8 4 6 0 66.67
    RideLondon-Surrey Classic 2015 6 10 6 0 72.73
    Great Ocean Road Race 2014 0 0 0 0 0.00
    Tour of Qatar 2014 13 5 1 0 94.74
    Abu Dhabi Tour 2014 0 0 0 0 0.00
    Omloop Het Nieuwsblad 2014 11 10 0 0 100.00
    Strade Bianche 2014 11 7 0 0 100.00
    Dwars door Vlaanderen 2014 14 8 0 0 100.00
    Tour of Turkey 2014 8 11 1 0 95.00
    Eschborn-Frankfurt 2014 4 8 8 1 57.14
    Tour of California 2014 9 3 4 0 75.00
    RideLondon-Surrey Classic 2014 7 5 12 1 48.00

The average percentage of WT and ProConti teams in the various races' peloton is:
    Race Average Pro %
    Great Ocean Road Race 61.90
    Tour of Qatar 96.36
    Abu Dhabi Tour 83.78
    Omloop Het Nieuwsblad 98.55
    Strade Bianche 100.00
    Dwars door Vlaanderen 100.00
    Tour of Turkey 85.96
    Eschborn-Frankfurt 61.36
    Tour of California 71.15
    RideLondon-Surrey Classic 61.11

As you can see, there are four races with a markedly higher pro team percentage:
The Tour of Qatar, Omloop Het Nieuwsblad, Strade Bianche, and Dwars door Vlaanderen, all at >95%.
These four races are, in terms of the quality of the peloton, deserving of WT status.

The other six races, however, are quite a way from having the same quality of teams, at percentages always below 86%, in some cases as low as 61%. Individual editions go as low as 57% or even only 48%.

Just wait until some PCT shows up at the doorstep with a huge bag of cash.
They'll invite the 23rd team in the blink of an eye then. ;)

    That could very well happen.
They were at the Dauphiné this year, and that's sort of the dress rehearsal for the Tour. And they have a young, French climber in Guillaume Martin.

Exactly. The three French teams and Wanty rather than DMP. I like the look of Martin. He missed all his winter training last year due to injury So reckon he could be a good rider.

Teams and the UCI not happy with the reduction

UCI saying PCC needs to approve changes not races.

Dekker from Jumbo saying if they knew this before teams would have 3-5 riders less

BUT ... the teams needed to be involved in this decision.  They need to know how many riders they need ...

Dekker from Jumbo saying if they knew this before teams would have 3-5 riders less
I don't see how or why.
I mean, sure, if every rider had the same race program, they would need fewer riders; but nobody forces teams to give riders as heavy schedules as possible.

With fewer riders per race, there would be more room for lighter race schedules - either for riders returning from injury, young riders getting used to a WT season, or old riders who might want to focus on fewer races.

To me, this is a strawman argument.

Sure but 3-5 riders means less wages

    See the theme yet Fus.

This is all wrapped up as better racing, safer etc  but I see it as a cost cutting exercise

Teams and the UCI not happy with the reduction

UCI saying PCC needs to approve changes not races.

Dekker from Jumbo saying if they knew this before teams would have 3-5 riders less

I'm trying to see why it would be a cut of 3-5 riders but I can't. It will mean a reduction of approximately 100 rider race days if my quick totting up included all of the relevant races so I would have thought that it would be 1 - 2 less not 3 - 5

Why are the teams opposing it, then?! If it is a cost-cutting exercise, they ought to welcome it!

Unless, of course, they had wanted to get the news ahead of the transfer season, and not afterwards ... :shh
