  • Of course, if this turns out someday to be the industry standard integrated handlebar-computer-braking solution then I'll eat my kevlar-reinforced aerodynamic hat.

Boohoohoo, they'll have to pay riders for another year now before getting to lay off a couple of them. :'(

Of course, the UCI have come out and said that they don't agree with the changes, so it may not even happen after all.

Good grief, this sport is governed anything but professionally. :fp

the organisation is a complete shambles.

Yes - less riders in these races is something that makes sense and I agree with 100%

BUT - that needs planning and time.  It needs to be made clear before riders are signed up, before rider schedules are decided on, when teams are planning for their season.

Yes, if they only need 8 for each GT, and 7 for the major classics, then they may be looking at 2 or maybe 3 less domestiques ... some of the big teams may still have kept the same, but many smaller teams who already struggle to stay above water would have had 1 or 2 less.

as for communication - seriously how can anyone expect race communication to be good when these guys cant even decide what they all agree on.   Negotiating via the media is never a good strategy

THAT is about the sum of it. Personally, I was gladdened to see the decision of ASO et al. And saddened to see the response of UCI - but - in retrospect - what should one expect - ASO is standing on UCI ground, and UCI can not just let that slide, can they?

Meh - ASO is, IMHO, doing the right thing. At least they are moving forward and taking action.

    FWIW
This reduction has been discussed for years at meetings within the UCI. This is a power thing from the races. A political point scoring exercise.

    Even if it makes sense

Quite an old article but it's interesting how Haussler sorted himself out while never again matching the kind of results he delivered back then.

If you'll forgive the brief OT foray into the Dark Side, I have tended to see him as a member of what I imagine as a bio-passport lost generation (Pozzato, Wegmann, Burghardt, Gerdemann, ...) but in any case it seems remarkable how he was able to stay more or less at the top level all these years.

Presumably his qualities as an experienced and, these days at least, professional senior rider are very much in demand.

well, he basically was in touch to win Roubaix this year, the last cobbled section just turned out to be 100m too long. I think he still has a big win in him - and so do the teams, by the look of it. Same for Pozzato, maybe Devolder etc

question. if they dont get the WT spot, will they continue as Pro-Conti?
that would mean the contracts can be broken and Meintjes and co would be on the market.
and, if they dont get the WT spot, will a Pro-Conti step up for the 18th spot?

I hope not. so we finally have 17 WT spots (and TJ-Sport could stay home for the Vuelta and allow a 5th wild card)

Hm. Didn't see this until now.

On the one hand, new races are good. And the points race format sounds as if it could work.
On the other hand - Cauberg? Can't you find a new climb? There are so, so many races in the ever-same areas and using the ever-same landmarks already; do we really need more of that?
If you want to be really evil, make them work for it and use the Keutenberg! :D
