It's a dog eat dog world out there and it's not as if good US riders are so common, so when there is one he becomes a bone worth fighting over. There are still a few good riders at other North American CT teams (Burke, Hecht, Villalobos, Piccoli, Rodriguez and Stinky Carl) but they may have to look towards Europe to increase their squad sizes up to 16 (at least).

In fact let's have a look at the three teams.

#axeon

Signed Davis, Mostov, Philipsen and Zijlaard. Waiting on news on 9 renewals (could be 10 if Costa returns). So they still need at least two more signings - Bjerg has been rumoured. Could do with a good climber if Costa is still on indefinite leave.

#rally

Signed Carpenter. Huffman is the only confirmed renewal so far, but if everyone does continue they will only need one more signing. Ellsay could be that guy, but I think they're short of a sprinter. Boivin hasn't re-signed with Bike Geeeeeeeks yet....

#holowesko

Eisenhart is the only confirmed rider staying and even if the rest (excluding Carpenter) re-sign they'll still need at least five new signings. Not averse to signing Eastern Europeans (Skujins, Flaksis and Krasy).

    Shane Archbold #bora --> #aquablue

    Excellent signing. All they need now is a sprinter. :P
    I guess Blythe & M. Kreder are supposed to fill that role - and with Archbold, Gate, Fenn & Brammeier as lead-out train, they should actually stand a chance.

    Second that! It is really starting to look like #unox is the new #joker. Now they are also starting to grab parts of joker's age sliver of slightly older U23 riders. (Earlier this fall it looked like Uno-x could be the younger edition of joker, but this is becoming a bit blurred. Now it seems that    Kristiansen's Norway U-23 squad is about to become the new Uno-x. If recruitment goes ahead at this pace, they'll buy back Halvorsen from Sky before the spring classics starts :)

    Joker didn't offer much in terms of salaries for the riders (and the staff?) and I am starting to speculate there is a longer term discontent directed at the Team Joker ownership that fuels this exodus. The way it looks now, it will be a much reduced squad in terms of quality for next year. Then again - Joker loosing a few important riders, that has happened a few times before - and they always come back, somehow - with new strong riders. As an example of the opposite Sparebanken Sør never made the full comeback after many of their best riders left for Joker a few years back, and now they're gone.

    Who knows.
    There are those new North American ProConti teams as well. They will sign some Europeans, they have to, in order to get 16 competitive riders each. And with Fuji being Caja Rural's bike sponsor - who knows. He won in Philly last year, so he'll be on their radar.

With his performances he will contribute to promoting an ideal team image and he will likely help us reach important competitive milestones.”

    What do we think?  Aru Giro and Vuelta leaving the TDF for Dan Martin?

    Sounds sensible. I don't think there'll be too much overlap between the two. The interesting interactions will be between those two and Costa and Ulissi. Maybe I'm being a bit harsh on both of them, but I have difficulty visualising them as super doms that are willing to give 100% in aid of someone else. It could be that they'll still be given free roles and the dom duties will be left to Atapupu, VSL etc.

    Mathias Norsgaard  #roskilde  ---> #riwal. Fresh from victory at the #U23 Chrono des Nations another from the defunct Giant Castelli stable has found a new home.

    certainly not stellar as well though, and probably below those expectations he raised with some really strong showings at Wanty - but yeah, I definitely see him above conti level.
