Stage 4  »  Colina - Farellones (124.3km)

http://www.bicyclingaustralia.com.au/destinations/vamos-cycling-in-chile

Quote
(Starting from Corral Quemado at 1300m) The road now starts to climb up the side of the mountains and the next 14.2 km is a big test of lungs and legs. There are 40 switch-backs, all individually numbered to count off as the road climbs skywards to a junction just before the ski town of Farellones. To reach here from the intersection near Corral Quemado the climb is almost exactly 1000m at an average of 7.1%. There is one flat section about halfway which provides an opportunity to recover but there are also several pinches of 10+%.

That's where the stage finishes, but they could have continued on up to 3000m with a further twenty hairpins to Valle Nevado.

Peter Tormen (57), the second Chilean to win the Vuelta de Chile, says that what happened on the podium on November 28, 1987, in the twilight of the military government of Augusto Pinochet, was a consequence of feelings that had been silenced for years , never something planned. After maintaining his advantage in the Cuesta Barriga - the penultimate stage of the race - and to get on the podium still wearing the leader knit, the journalists and the whole world gave it by winner of that edition. And so it was, there was no longer any doubt. He resisted stoically the attack of the Colombian Fabio Acevedo in the promotion, in the last opportunity to overcome it, reason why the question arrived like an obligation. "Who do you devote your triumph to, Peter?" They asked in front of the cameras and the audience. "To my brother Sergio, detained missing," he replied. The rest is known history.

Start list is available on the race website or you can just click through the images on this tweet.

    https://twitter.com/eddymansulino/status/917790874175762435

Eddy's your man for Uruguayan cycling news.

One name springs out from the local teams and that is Marco Arriagada. He won San Luis and the Vuelta de Chile in 2011, but got busted later on that year. Matias Arriagada on the same team is his nephew.

Some other names to watch out for include Almonacid (the defending champ), Garrido (the non-italic winner from 2011), Tello and Alvarado.

Riders that won't be appearing include Mansilla x 2, Lobito Burmann (busted), Edison Bravo (busted) and most surprisingly Rodriguez (he's signed for SEP San Juan).

It's not just WT riders in Grand Tours who hang onto cars. This is fairly strange though as all three ride for different teams.

Check out his good luck charm.

Anyway I still don't know if it's a double stage tomorrow or just a single one. The roadbook says two but most other sources say just one. We'll just have to wait and see.

    https://www.radiosport.cl/web/cinco-competidores-fueron-expulsados-de-la-vuelta-ciclista-de-chile/

Make that five (!) riders riding for four different teams. All Chilean.

    Carlos Riveros (KMC Kilómetro Cero)
    Martín Westermayer (Regional Talca)
    Jaime Marchant (Quinta Normal)
    Nicodemus Verdugo (Quinta Normal)
Edwards Fuentes (Chile España San Fernando)

There was no mention of the car in the communications (even though they could see the licence plate) so it can't have been a team car. Who did it belong to then?

Not the most positive images anyway to accompany the return of the race.

    1-2 for the Virgens.

    2nd KMC Kilómetro Cero  - 12m06

Not sure that's 100% correct as Canel's appear ahead of Medellin in the GC standings.

Another 1-2 for Mauro and Adrian.

That should be the correct PCS code once he adds in the TTT from yesterday.

    Vuelta a Guatemala 23rd October- 1st November

    Stage 1  »  GUATEMALA-ZACAPA (142 km)

    Stage 2  »  TECULUTAN-EL PROGRESO GUASTATOYA   (106.5 km)

    Stage 3a  »  ASUNCION MITA-EL PROGRESO JUTIAPA (83.2 km)

    Stage 3b  »  QUESADA-EL PROGRESO JUTIAPA TTT (27.5 km)

Stage 4  »  EL PROGRESO JUTIAPA-SAN JOSE PINULA GUATEMALA (118.3 Km)

Stage 5  »  VILLA NUEVA-SAN JOSE EL IDOLO SUCHITEPEQUEZ (132km)

    Stage 6  »  SAN SEBASTIAN RETALHULEHU-CHAMPERICO TT (43.6 Km)

    Stage 7  »  SAN PEDRO-CIRCUITO ESQUIPULAS PALO GORDO (7 laps)-SAN PEDRO (116 km)

Stage 8  »  CIRCUITO AVENIDA LAS ROSAS QUETZALTENANGO (10 laps)  (121 km)

    Stage 9  »  TECPAN-TECPAN (112 km)

Stage 10  »  MIXCO-CIRCUITO ANILLO PERIFÉRICO, CIUDAD DE GUATEMALA (6 laps)  (115 km)

These are the stages according to the tech guide, but most other sources say slightly different, so who knows which is correct.

There are three stages in a row at the end which will constantly be over 2000m, but it's the two time trials and stage 4 (?) which should be decisive.

I only recognise one name in the three teams from Mexico and Colombia, and Scott Teleuno aren't in the same league as Nestle, so the chances of a home win (the first since 2000) must be quite high.
