Herald Sun Tour
« on: December 01, 2016, 08:04 »
The Jayco Herald Sun Tour, Australia’s oldest stage race, which runs from Wednesday 1st – Sunday 5th February 2017, will debut a new final stage and a tough Falls Creek stage finish as features of the 2017 Sun Tour route.

After the now traditional open stage city-centre prologue the course will be more challenging in 2017 with the stage one finish at Falls Creek after starting in Wangaratta.

Riders will then go through Beechworth, Benalla and into Mitchelton Winery before completing four circuits of Kinglake on Sunday in what promises to be an epic final stage as the climax of the summer of cycling.

Minister for Tourism and Major Events John Eren said the Jayco Herald Sun Tour was a key date on Victoria’s calendar of major sporting events.

“Victoria now has a reputation as a sought-after location for the best cyclists in the world who want to come here to start their season,” Mr Eren said.

“To have Chris Froome return to defend his title says it all and even more people will come from around the country to see him be seriously challenged this year in what promises to be a great race.”

“Events like the Jayco Herald Sun Tour aren’t just great sporting spectacles, they’re big boosts to Victoria’s economy too. This event is particularly beneficial for Victoria because it gives our rural and regional communities their chance to shine.”

Jayco Herald Sun Tour chairman Tom Salom echoed those sentiments and believes Froome and Chaves will only further inspire the growing crop of young Australian talent.

“The Jayco Herald Sun Tour is now the only international cycling event in Australia giving our young cyclists the opportunity to ride next to the best in the world in a challenging race,” Salom said.

“It is tremendous that Chris has decided to return to the Jayco Herald Sun Tour after his win this year and to have Esteban challenging him on the peaks of Falls Creek is a thrill for everyone involved.”

“For aspiring riders on all the domestic teams, the chance to ride alongside Chris and his Team Sky colleagues will be memorable, as it will be for all those watching from the road side.”

“We again thank the Victorian Government and Jayco, who continue their ongoing support for the event. “The ‘Sun Tour’ has been part of our DNA at the Herald Sun for over 60 years and with this announcement, is set to go to yet another level in 2017.”

Of course, if this turns out someday to be the industry standard integrated handlebar-computer-braking solution then I'll eat my kevlar-reinforced aerodynamic hat.

I stumbled across this on Facebook while looking for Tour de Langkawi news...

    Quote
Filipinos racing against Chris Froome at Herald Sun Tour?

It is almost confirmed…7-Eleven Sava Road Bike Philippines will debut in Oceania races.

Team Director Rick Rodriguez bared on Dzsr SportsRadioCycle Lane program that an invitation from the organizers of the UCI 2.1 Herald Sun Tour is expected following the withdrawal of two teams from the original roster.

The country’s lone Continental team is all fired-up to race against three-time Tour de France winner and Herald defending champion Chris Froome of Team Sky and superstar riders from 8 World Tour Teams, who will make their season build-up in Australia.

Impressive results by 7Eleven cyclists in Asian racing the past years, especially in mountain stages , eaned them the nod of the Herald Sun organizers.

The Herald Sun Tour set February 1-5 features hilly and high mountain stages.

The 7Eleven Sava RBP shall comprise Mark Galedo, Marcelo Felipe, Rustom Lim ,Edgar Nieto (Spain),Jesse Ewart and two new Australian recruits Josh Berry and Craig Evers.

Sprinter Dominic Perez is also going to Australia midweek of January for the Herald Criterium.

The team, formed by Engr. Bong Sual, will actually start the 2017 season with the 2.2 New Zealand Cycle Classic on January 22-26, before it races at herald Sun Tour.

The two big races serve as ideal build-up for two more important events, the February 18-21 Le Tour de Filipinas and UCI HC Le Tour de Langkawi in Malaysia on Feb 22-March 1.

Rodriguez stressed that all these efforts shall gear the team up for Southeast Asian supremacy in UCI races and qualifying to the 2020 Tokyo Olympic Games.

Completing the members of the Phl Continental squad are Nelson Martin, Bonijoe Martin and Arjay Peralta.

    well, and it's already confirmed:

    Quote
    Dzsr SportsRadio's Cycle Lane Notes:

It’s confirmed-----MARK GALEDO and the 7Eleven Road Bike Philippine team shall compete against CHRIS FROOME and other World Tour riders in the February 1-5 Herald Sun Tour in Australia.

Philippine Continental Team Director Ric Rodriguez announced on SR’s Cycle Lane radio program the invitation received from the Herald Sun Tour organizers, who took notice of the climbing prowess of 7Eleven in its four years at Asian 2.2 races.

Rodriguez said that riders and officials are excited as they become the first Phl team to be invited in such high-level race where they shall ride side-by-side with World Tour stars in the likes of 3-time Tour de France Champion Chris Froome and his Team Sky, Simon Gerrans of Orica, and Colombia’s Esteban Chavez.

7Eleven admits that winning against Froome and the rest of the World Tour stars is not its aim ….but to gauge the filipinos’ level against them , gain experience and motivation in our ultimate goal of qualifying to the 2020 Tokyo Olympics .

Before the Herald Sun Tour, the team shall compete first at the 2.2 New Zealand Cycling Classic on Jan 22-26.

The composition of the team are Mark Galedo, Marcelo Felipe, Rustom Lim, Edgar Nieto, Jesse Ewart, Craig Evers and Josh Berry.

results make it look like carnage on the road  :)
Did anyone - apart from, maybe, the race organisers who paid good money to attract big names - ever believe that Chaves and Froome would race 100% up Falls Creek?
Of course they'd let a 'smaller' rider go up the road for the win. Maybe that was even part of the deal: Be in the top-10, but let some of the Aussies up the road.

The presence of five (!) #teamau riders in the stage top-10 also speaks for itself: Apart from the Aussies, nobody cares.

If they'd have really driven the pace Orica wouldn't have got back in, surely. Being February.

The highlights I saw seemed to miss out about 10km.
